    First Take
The Aztek, introduced for 2001, is a "crossover" SUV based on the Montana minivan. It's available with either front- or all-wheel drive The engine is a 3.4-liter, 185-hp V6, shared with the Buick Rendezvous and various GM minivans. The Aztek is clearly aimed at the "active lifestyle" crowd, with handy features like removable plastic storage boxes, a removable center-console cooler, a slide-out cargo tray, and a tent that fits onto the rear of the vehicle. Ride and handling are acceptable, and front access is easy. Negatives include a rear seat that's too low, a split rear gate that's a bit awkward to operate, and the lack of a rear wiper. For 2002, Pontiac jettisoned the Aztek's controversial gray body cladding in favor of a more conventional monochromatic look.
