This version of the Saab 9-5 had received only a few updates since its 1998 introduction. Sadly, it’s a good car that lacked the refinement and ride comfort of its more updated competitors. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers good acceleration, but sounds coarse and, at 21 mpg overall, is not as fuel-efficient as the competition. Handling is sound, but not particularly agile. The 9-5 does have a roomy rear seat and an expansive trunk. But the ride is stiff and unsettled, the cabin is noisy, and the climate system isn't well calibrated. Crash-test results are very good.
