Saab's redesigned 9-5 shares engines and underpinnings with the competent and enjoyable Buick LaCrosse and Regal, its former cousins at General Motors. But the 9-5 doesn't measure up to the Buicks, or, any other similarly priced competitor. It's got great fit and finish, fairly nimble handling, and a large trunk -- but that's where the good news ends. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is noisy and a little weak for this class while offering no advantage in fuel economy. The stiff ride, cramped cockpit, and restricted driver visibility hammer the overall score down to the point where we can't recommend it.
