    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

"the front brakes began making noise at about 30000"

Anonymous A., MN (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I am now having to replace the brake pads and possibly the rotors a second time after 90000 miles. The brakes in general do not inspire confidence."

Anonymous, NY (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Pulsation or vibration

"Its been a repeat issue since about 10000 miles. Fixes are only temporary, at least through the dealership. Will try aftermarket part next time."

Anonymous, VT (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Rotors

    "Rotors pulsate during hard braking"

Anonymous, OH (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I've had to have 4 brake jobs so far since new. The first brake job was at 14,000 miles. The fourth one was at 38,000 miles. Pads had to be replaced repeatedly, rotors machined repeatedly, then rotors replaced. The dealership says that this is because the "car is heavy". I find this ridiculous. The brake system should match the vehicle. My gut feeling is that the "distance pacing" feature is incorrectly designed. I feel that the distance pacing applies and/or keeps the brakes applied too often or for too long, resulting in overheating of the pads and rotors. The warped rotors then need machining and pads replaced."

Anonymous A., WA (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Issue began within the first 10000 miles of driving, and has consistently been a problem requiring mechanic intervention every 10000 miles."

Anonymous, CO (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The entire front end seemed to be shaking and grinding, It is the second time that this vehicle has had the problem."

Anonymous A., GA (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    What Owners Say

    Interior lights

"Driver's map light is intermittent, dealer claims it's a bulb. 3rd row passenger light is out, also claimed to be a bulb. The intermittent nature of map light gives me pause on that, though."

Anonymous, DE (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Keyless entry

"it resolved itself. I don't know how. It quit working for a few days, then it started working again."

Anonymous, TN (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other electrical system problem

"National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety recall WRL-22"

Anonymous A., VA (2021 Subaru Ascent 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    USB port

"When plugging in an apple phone to the USB, on occasion the car would not register that there was a phone plugged in which would result in no apple car play or bluetooth access."

Anonymous A., NH (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"New part ordered, 6 weeks ago. No word from dealership as of yet when it will be available. The 12V charge point works, so not entirely out of business, so I don't feel rushed over it."

Anonymous, DE (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

Anonymous A., VA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The moon roof randomly cracked. There was no collision or impact. It just randomly cracked. It was within warranty and was replaced at no cost to me."

Anonymous, VA (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Intermittent windshield wipers stopped working"

Anonymous, WA (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Tailgate stopped working in November. Took it in and they reprogrammed it. Stopped working again in March. Took it I and they replaced the assembly. Drivers side window would only partially close if it got wet (specifically car wash). Occurred last summer, but were in Texas in the middle of a drought and so we didnt take it in immediately. Back windshield wiper had also quit working but when youre not getting any rain, it wasnt so much a problem that we wanted to take it in and be without our car. But when the tailgate stopped working, we finally bit the bullet and took it in. Was in the shop for about a week. But as I said above, the tailgate stopped working AGAIN in March so we were forced to take it in at that point. Earlier this year a rock from a dump truck hit the front windshield and that chip quickly caused a crack obscuring the drivers side view. Because of the cameras, it required taking it in and leaving it for several days to be replaced. Cost a little over $1,100 because the cameras had to be checked after installation. Because we have a $1000 deductible, we didnt turn it in to insurance and had to pay it out of pocket. This (the windshield) probably isnt what you meant for this particular question, but normally replacing a windshield wouldnt be so pricey. The first three items listed were covered because we bought the extended warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2021 Subaru Ascent 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Other steering/suspension problem

"I purchased a new 2020 Ascent (based on CR ratings). The transmission failed within the first 12 months. It fell under warranty and was repaired, but I no longer trusted the vehicle. I worked with the dealer and traded it in for a 2021 Ascent. I have had the trunk repaired twice for issues with power open/closing."

Anonymous, PA (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Shocks or struts

"Strut broke. Dealership replaced both at no cost."

Anonymous A., FL (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

A melting ground terminal increases the risk of a fire.
    Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Ascent vehicles. The ground bolt that secures the ground terminal of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater may have been improperly fastened, which could result in melting of the ground terminal and surrounding components.
    What should you do:
Owners are advised to park their vehicle away from structures and to avoid leaving the vehicle unattended while the engine is running. An owner who notices or smells smoke coming from the dash or driver's footwell area should immediately stop operating the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Dealers will replace the PTC heater ground bolts and if necessary, replace the ground wire and the connector holder, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 6, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRL-22.
