    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2022 Subaru Ascent owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"Varied Subaru dealers have told me the hesitation is caused by the engine. Others Subaru dealers have told me the hesitation is a transmission problem. I do not know what to believe. I do believe Subaru avoids identification of the problem to avoid an expensive repair. Had I know the hesitation would continue I would not have purchased the vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2022 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Rough shifting

    "Replaced before warranty expired"

Anonymous A., LA (2022 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Transmission runs rough and occasionally does not shift."

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

"With our Ascent, the right front caliper malfunctioned causing metal to metal friction. Subaru parts are required to repair the brakes jacking up the cost of repair from 259 dollars to over a thousand. 888 dollars for the parts alone from Subaru."

Anonymous, OR (2022 Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Rotors

"With about only 15000 mikes the front rotors required resurfacing. That stopped the brake pulsating. Ive owned over 20 cars in the last 55 years and Ive never had to have rotors serviced in under 60k miles so I dont think it was my driving technique."

Anonymous A., MD (2022 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"subaru demands full service of breaks every 20k km. my mechanic, not subaru, did not perform this service. subsequently, at 38k km problem was so bad subaru dealer did a full rebuild of all breaks including new rotors. now at 55k, it looks like problem is returning."

Anonymous, BC (2022 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

    "oil sensor leak"

Anonymous, ID (2022 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Front fender seal at the door on both sides separated"

Anonymous, DE (2022 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Oil leaks

"Started in June 2023 about 10 months after purchase. A burnin oil smell and loss of acceleration was noticed. Turns out that oil was leaking from the upper and lower gaskets. Engine had to be taken apart and both gaskets had to be resealed. repair process was covered under warranty and was completed in four days. After repairs when giving harder acceleration burning oil smell still exists although they are unable to find a current leak."

Anonymous, RI (2022 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other minor engine problem

"Since new,the vehicle has a hesitation on start and slight when shifting gears. Dealer said this would cease once vehicle knew my driving habit. This is a total falsehood. I was shocked a Subaru dealer would be so dishonest. Another dealer told me this was a typical hesitation in the engine and transmission. The selling dealer was totally dishonest with me. The vehicle continues to hesitate. Engine warm or cold will hesitate. One dealer total me to add an injection clearer or be careful where I buy fuel. What NEW VEHICLE needs injector cleaner or careful where I purchase fuel."

Anonymous, TX (2022 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"We found out that other Ascent drivers have had the same thing happen to their Ascents and one reported that Subaru reimbursed him for the work done at a a third party shop. So, Subaru knows there is a problem."

A melting ground terminal increases the risk of a fire.
    Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Ascent vehicles. The ground bolt that secures the ground terminal of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater may have been improperly fastened, which could result in melting of the ground terminal and surrounding components.
    What should you do:
Owners are advised to park their vehicle away from structures and to avoid leaving the vehicle unattended while the engine is running. An owner who notices or smells smoke coming from the dash or driver's footwell area should immediately stop operating the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Dealers will replace the PTC heater ground bolts and if necessary, replace the ground wire and the connector holder, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 6, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRL-22.
