The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Subaru Crosstrek owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Calipers

"The passenger side rear caliper kept seizing causing the brakes to squeak and wear prematurely. Grooves started forming in the rotor."

Anonymous, ME (2019 Subaru Crosstrek Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Premature brake wear

"Brake disks wore out after only 18,000 kms and had to be replaced."

Anonymous, QC (2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"What I have learned ( online forum, representative at the dealer maintenance), the brake pads for the rear two wheels appear to be thinner than the ones from the front wheels. Due to equal braking distribution during braking, the rear brake pads wear out faster. Now, this has not been confirmed, but the a good plausible theory. Would like to see this confirmed if you do end up digging into this more."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The problem of premature break wear was found during routine servicing. The problem was corrected and I received a discount on the repair."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Subaru Crosstrek Unsure)

    What Owners Say

    Apple CarPlay

"Sometimes CarPlay will not connect. Whether I turn car off and try again ir turn phone off does not matter. Problem is intermittent and unpredictable. Subaru claims they cant do anything and it is Apples fault. Distressing to lose navigation and connectivity. When it works, its great."

"Starter- Car not starting. Battery issues. 1.Car not starting. Left me in the lurch several times. After a few minutes started but happened again, no start. Towed to Dealer (AAA) who said starter warranty had just expired but they replaced starter at no charge. (they reported other starter issue and recall for some Subaru s but mine was not on the list.) 2. Still car was not starting reliably. Once when I was away two weeks and again under normal conditions. I called AAA for jumps. Had battery tested and replaced at my local, long time automotive co. Failed again 6 months later. They Replaced at no charge. Said my Subaru was not only one with same issues battery, trouble starting. 3. Jan. 2024: I was away 2 weeks. Friend came to start it, nothing. could not even unlock doors automatically, or start after using manual key. AAA came, towed to dealer. After I agreed to a "$165 customer approved 1 hr diag", When they could fit it in, dealer replaced with "OEM subaru battery" at a cost of $302. Did not charge for diagnostics. said problem was my driving habit. Not long enough trips. Dealer Recommendation: "Customer purchase at dealer and have installed a battery tender for ease of use." quote $555. est." Which I have not done. I am taking longer trips on the highway weekly or so. Why should I have to? Pollution. Cost. Conclusion: Subaru had Unacceptable customer service. Unacceptable starter and battery failures. Unacceptable reliability for me as a driver who is making fewer and shorter trips. Auto reliability and performance should not be dependent on driving habits/patterns of customer, or they should make that very clear. People, drivers are changing the way they use their car, hopefully. Encouraged to walk/bike/car share. Consolidate trips etc. Thank twice. It's called climate change. Subaru is behind the times with a car that fails like mine did: because I use it less. And leaves me unsure of my trip every time I go to start my car. Thanks. Diana Carlisle"

    Other major engine problem

"Car blows white smoke when parked on street at a slight angle. Went to dealership to get problem fixed and they said it it's simply a problem with direct injection that carbon build up on intake valve. I said that doesn't make sense as the problem is intermittent. They said that it has a lot of sensors and it may be different according to temperature, humidity, etc. I said baloney, and given that it happens when it is parked and pitched towards the passenger side, it makes me question a possible valve guide problem on the right side. They said that wasn't the problem and tan a detergent through the fiel system to no discernable effect."
