    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Started beginning last year. Sensor light stays on . Triple checked, cleaned by mechanic. Light still stays on"

Anonymous, VA (2006 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"4 days after I received or purchased the vehicle, the check engine light came on. I called the dealership, not the auto broker, but dealership to get in and see what was going on and I had a warranty. It's supposed to have a total verbally. It's supposed to be covered everything for the next 5 years. It ended up being in the dealership. From I purchased it November 16th. It went in couldn't get in until December 23rd. Cause they were so backlogged and it was there for. 4 months luckily they gave me a loner. And ended up being the catalytic converter and we went round and round with the warranty company. And then did up being the salesman told me incorrectly about quote.Everything being covered so it was back-and-forth.I ended up having to take him to civil court for that"

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

"Just to review: 2006 Subaru Forester X, non-turbo, 2.5L, H4 engine. Purchased with 102,000 miles when it was 16 years old. I needed a SUV at that time, there just was not many used SUV's anywhere outside of the city. A local Subaru repair shop with certified mechanics trained on Subaru's had purchased the vehicle and repaired front end damage from a deer strike. The repair and painting was done properly. About the day in March when the cylinder failed, it happened as I was driving at 45 MPH on a rural road. The check engine light came on steady at first, and then it started to flash indicating that there was a significant issue. There was very little power, and as I got close to my destination where there was much traffic, I pulled off the road into a parking lot. The engine stalled, and I had trouble restarting it. After I started it, I had to give much gas to keep it running. I limped the vehicle to another parking lot of where I was going to. I let it sit. I opened the hood, and saw nothing wrong, no smoke, or leaks. I tried restarting one more time and the engine would not start up after cranking. Up until this issue, the engine was running fine. I determined that there was no way that the vehicle was going to be driven 8 miles to the Subaru repair shop. I called AAA and within 30 minutes, the flatbed tow truck winched my vehicle up on the bed. The vehicle was dropped off at the Subaru repair shop where I bought it from. The following day, a mechanic said that the issue was 2 of the pistons on the left side of engine descended into the cylinder head and were stuck. They took 2 weeks gathering the parts and pulling the engine, and taking the damaged cylinder head off. The shop owns many Subaru parts, and they replaced it with a used cylinder head. When I picked up the vehicle, I drove it about 50 miles to be sure the repair was done correctly. I was satisfied that the mechanics did the work well. All parts related to the cylinder head were replaced using new parts, such as the many gaskets and seals, and new coolant and engine oil. They gave me a detailed repair bill with the list of what they replaced. The 2.5L in the 2006 Forester is a "boxer" type engine. The repair shop told me they regularly do this type of repair to that engine. This Subaru is the 1st foreign built vehicle I have owned in 46 years of driving. I currently own a wonderful 6 cylinder (3.8L) supercharged Pontiac that has given me few problems in the 15 years I have driven it. I am the only current driver of all the vehicles I own. I also keep all my vehicles stored in a closed garage. If I continue to have non-stop issues with this Subaru Forester, I think I will sell this SUV, and move on to something else. I did not expect such a catastrophic failure at only 124,000 miles. I belong to a Subaru Forester forum page, and I am trying to gain an understanding of what happened with the engine. Is this is lemon? For a Subaru, 124,000 miles seems low mileage."

    Anonymous, PA (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"In the summer of 2023 car was running "rough" and lacked power. Dealer determined it was due to carbon buildup in cylinder causing misfires. Resolved by taking engine apart to clean cylinders."

    Anonymous A., FL (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Head gasket

"Head gasket leaked and had to be replaced. I was informed this this is a common problem with this model."

    Anonymous A., FL (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Timing belt or chain

"Recommended solely: replacing the timing belt due to current mileage. future? check the currently minor (engine) gasket leak"

    Anonymous, NC (2006 Subaru Forester)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Calipers

"Last year, calipers worn down, needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, VA (2006 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"2006 Forester. In June 2023, there were 116,000 miles on the OD. I was hearing noise and smelling a burnt odor coming from the drivers side wheel. It was increasingly getting worse over the course of the last 400 miles driven. After a drive of a few miles or more, I could feel heat coming from the right front wheel. I called the Subaru repair shop near me and told them I suspected the brakes were faulty. The next day, I picked the vehicle up, and the mechanic said that he replaced both front calipers, rotors, and disc brake pads. I drove the vehicle and all was well. The complete charge for the work was $500. To this day, the brakes work fine. I don't put blame on Subaru for the wear on brakes. The vehicle performs fine."
