    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Ignition coil failed; nursed ailing car 1.5 miles to shop; replaced coil + all downstream electrical, incl. spark plugs. Within week or two catalytic converter burned out & had to be replaced, unburned fuel likely (confirmed per Internet info)."

    Anonymous A., MI (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"DTC for catalytic converter efficiency, very expensive to fix"

    Anonymous, NE (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "Rust"

    Anonymous, NL (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Because of the high mileage I decided to have the catalytic converter replaced."

Anonymous, GA (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Exhaust leaks

"This is an ongoing problem. I think because of all the salt used on the roads in the area we live. Now, there is a leak in one of the pipes closer to the front of the vehicle, which cannot be repaired unless we spend about $3,000 to have the part manufactured (i.e., Subaru stopped making it). We have replaced the muffler and some of the pipes near the back of the car twice since we've owned it."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Loose/rattling heat shield

    "Years ago"

Anonymous A., CT (2010 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Muffler

"Needed replacements. Only once. There are two exhaust pipes in my Subaru Forester. Thankfully I did not need to replace the Catalytic Converters."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

"At 64,000 miles I was told the head gasket was leaking. The dealer said it was a known problem but when I asked if it was covered under warranty or recall they said no..."

    Anonymous, NH (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Engine rebuild or replacement

"I have included some repairs made more than 12 months ago, because they're part of an entire shipload of unexpected and bizarre problems occurring over 20 months or more, till the present. In July 2022, I took it in for routine maintenance (oil change, replace battery), and R wiper blade skipping. I was told the engine seals were leaking (head gasket, oil pan gasket). Tie rods etc. were worn out. I didn't have them done because $$$. Still haven't had suspension work done, because of the shipload of other problems that followed when I had the engine seals replaced. Short version: Over a dozen repairs performed July 2022 - March 2024, including Oil Control Valve, Oil pump, Wiring harness in addition to those listed in my survey (replaced engine short block, and they had to open it up again later for the oil pump replacement). 8-10 loaner cars. About $19,000 out of my pocket, and more that the dealer comp'd. So many parts replaced, it's a wonder there are any left that need replacing. At this point, I have no confidence that it's running right. The Check Engine Light still comes on at random times, or the engine runs rough at random times. It spent so much time in the shop that the battery replaced July 2022 went bad because they didn't keep it charged. They made me pay for a new one a year later, claiming it was my fault because I didn't drive it enough. I call it my "late blooming lemon," because I had NO problems out of the ordinary before this, except the rear view mirror falling off, prior to this. I want to get another Forester, but I don't trust Subaru any more. They tout happy Subaru owners driving cars with 200,000 miles. What gives with these kinds of failures starting at 86,000 miles, then?? Internet research informed me that 2010 Foresters were built with a bad head gasket. What hidden problems might the newer models have that will come back to bite me later on? I also don't trust this dealer. I don't trust my car, and really need to replace it. I don't like Toyotas. I've never driven a Kia. I love my Forester-- in so many ways it's a perfect fit for me-- but I hate this whole situation."

    Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cylinder problems resulting in the engine being replaced."

Anonymous, MT (2010 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Somewhere had an oil leak when I had engine issues. I believe the Lou Fusz Subaru dealer service department didn't put enough oil in it when I had an oil change."

    Anonymous, MO (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Head gasket

"dealership told me I needed new head gaskets and then noticed oil dripping on garage floor but that could be from oil pan that is leaking from a scrape on curb."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Apparently the head gasket problem is common to the subaru forester and causes an oil leak and can be somewhat expensive to repair"

Anonymous, BC (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other major engine problem

"Ignition coil failed (2nd time). Causes CEL, stalling, rough running."

    Anonymous, NE (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cam sensor was intermittent causing engine to die at stop signs but would easily restart."

Anonymous, CO (2010 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Timing belt or chain

"Subarus generally need their timing belt changed around 100,000 miles. This one needed it earlier than that simply because it is a 2010. I didn't mind changing it early; but it was an extra expense I wasn't prepared for."

    Anonymous, NY (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Steering And Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other steering/suspension problem

"I took the car into the dealership to have the bushings replaced, but they found that the sway bars were broken also. The back tire coils needed one replaced, but they are replaced only in pairs. This was all done at the dealership on May 2, 2024."

    Anonymous, NY (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Shocks or struts

"There was much noise under the front driver side of the car."

    Anonymous, NY (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Dealership told me steering rack needs replacing. I only have their word as it drives fine."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The steering rack developed a leak enough that it was dripping on the pavement after driving it and the reservoir was obviously losing fluid at a steady rate. The cost from an independent shop to repair - that is, replace with a reconditioned rack - was around $1600. I chose to try blue devil stopleak for power steering. It did not completely cure the problem but did slow it to a trickle, no longer drips onto driveway when parked and I only need to add fluid very infrequently."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Tie rod ends worn out"

    Anonymous A., MD (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Oil leaks

"I had gotten regular oil changes and had not noticed any significant smells or leaks, but apparently my car ran out of oil without any lights on the dash going off until the situation was so dire my engine overheated/ destroyed itself while I was 3 hours away from home. This required an engine replacement and being without my car for about a month."

    Anonymous A., MI (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"this problem is a result of the other head gasket problem"

Anonymous, BC (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous, MN (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Problem(s) fueling the tank

    Regular brake failure

    "normal maintenance"

Anonymous, ME (2010 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Rotors

"I think this issue is also because of the excessive salt used on our roads. The rotators completely froze and we could not move the vehicle. It had to be picked up and dropped off at the mechanic to 'unlock' the wheels."

    Anonymous, MO (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Spark plugs or wires failure

"A month or so after doing the engine reseal, Check Engine Light was coming on. The dealer suspected carbon build up. It took them awhile to figure out it was the spark plugs. Why didn't they check and replace the spark plugs, which I'm told are tricky to replace in this model, while they were replacing the head gasket? A month or two later, the CEL came on again. They discovered that the distributor wires were worn. So they replaced the wires to the spark plugs, and replaced the coil. Why on earth did they not replace them with the spark plugs?? A couple months later, the replaced the injectors-- and the OTHER coil. The design of the Boxer engine means it has TWO coils-- but they hadn't replaced BOTH of them previously, just one. WHAT THE -- ??? Everything in this series of simple parts replacements happened AFTER the CEL came on, and AFTER the technician had checked for other stuff. And, in my opinion (but I'm not a mechanic, so what do I know), all of that stuff should have been replaced along with the spark plugs, because isn't that how it's normally done? Yeah, and sometime later they replaced the entire wiring harness, which meant they had to take apart the engine again."

    Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
