    What Owners Say

    Ball joints

"I am told that they need to be replaced"

Anonymous A., ON (2014 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Passenger side, lower ball joint was worn. About 4 months ago I rotated my tires during my yearly oil change. I'm retired and only drive about 6,000 miles a year hence the once a year oil/filter change. I also rotate my tires during these yearly oil changes among other preventive maintenance. I checked for play in all 4 wheels and found none. I did find worn front pads that were serviceable but probably wouldn't last much longer so I replaced the pads and rotors on all 4 wheels for about $300. One month ago I go for my yearly inspection and failed because of the worn ball joint. So it must have just started wearing out and I never noticed any symptoms. I normally do my own work but this aging body did not want to fight a rusted ball joint while laying on my garage floor so I paid the man $185. Local mechanic fixed it right the first time and charged me an hour labor and $85 for the ball joint.""

I took the car to a different mechanic who said the struts had come loose and had not been attached properly. Last week I took the car in again for the same issue. Brought the car in for horn failure, I've since learned that any buttons on the steering wheel will fail, in time, without replacement of the clock spring. Other minor engine problem

""The downtone Spokane, Washington Subaru dealership didn't tell me that this particular 2014 engine is notoriously known to burn oil. It requires additional 1 to 3 quarts oil monthly, depending on usage. I have addressed this issue many times. The dealership said it's not their problem as that's the way this engine was made. I've since learned that Subaru's engine manufacturer realized the problem, corrected it with an 'O' ring, and produced an improved 2014 engine that same year. However, they did not correct the previouly made 2014 engines already sold. YES, my 2014 Subaru is still burning oil! Truly disappointed in their ability to fully correct a know designer flaw.""

    Anonymous A., (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had a check engine light for a number of years and had dealership try to fix. Finally able to clear the issue at an independent mechanic by flushing the oil system and replacing all four spark plugs (that were coated and causing a misfire). No more check engine light but car doesn't have the "turbo" and get-up-and-go that it used too. Still a great and reliable car overall considering it has 208,000 miles with mostly just regular oil changes, tire rotations, suspension checks, etc."

"Whining noise from CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), most likely pully bearing. The vehicle did not exhibit any "check engine" lights (error codes) and continued to operate normally except for the whining noise that slowly became louder. Dealership stated that the CVT would need to be replaced with either a new, remanufactured, or used CVT. Vehicle is 145,000, was well maintained (oil changed every 5,000 miles) along with the other Subaru's recommended maintenance, and with one owner, driven as a commuter vehicle, mostly highway miles. Unfortunately the repair cost of $7,600 for a new CVT is not worth keeping the vehicle. Subaru states the transmission fluid for the CVT does not require changing is good for the life time of the CVT but I believe this is poor judgement and caused the CVT to prematurely break down. I believe this particular CVT is unreliable, thus making the 2014 Subaru Forester an unreliable vehicle and would not recommend it."

""It was a Saturday and I was two miles from home when an urgent message flashed not to drive the car. My auto repair shop was nearby but closed. I drove home and called a nearby Subaru dealership but no one returned my call after three tries. I then called another Subaru dealership and was told they were closing in an hour, so I called a tow truck driver to get my car checked in b4 they closed. The car needed a new transmission and axels.""

    EXTERIOR LIGHTING
    Feb 28, 2019
Brake lights that do not illuminate properly will not alert other drivers that the vehicle is slowing or stopping, increasing the risk of crash.
    Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Forester, 2008-2016 Impreza sedans, 2012-2016 Impreza station wagons, 2008-2014 WRX sedans (including STI), and 2013-2017 Crosstrek vehicles. Exposure to certain contaminants may cause the brake light switch to malfunction, preventing the brake lights from illuminating and also preventing keyless ignition vehicles from starting and CVT/automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of Park.
    What should you do:
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake light switch, free of charge. The recall began April 15, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUE-90.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

    EQUIPMENT
    Apr 24, 2013
Curling of the driver side floor mat could distract the driver and/or interfere with proper operation of one or a combination of, the vehicle's clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals. Brake or accelerator pedal interference may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash.
    Summary:
Subaru is recalling certain model year 2014 Forester vehicles manufactured from January 2013 through March 2013. The backing for the carpeted floor mats was not manufactured to specification. As a result, the floor mats may curl when exposed to heat.
    What should you do:
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace each of the vehicle's four (4) carpeted floor mats with new ones. These services will be performed free of charge. Subaru issued an interim notification during April 2013. Notification that the remedy is now available was mailed to owners on June 5, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQH-44.
