"Control arm bushings needed to be replaced because they were cracked."

    Anonymous A., VA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Lower front control arm bushings were badly cracked. The technician who inspected the vehicle in August of 2023 informed me that I would need to have them replaced prior to the next annual inspection (Pennsylvania requirement).I decided to replace the lower front control arms (with bushings and ball joints) and strut assemblies myself. I replaced those items in January of 2024, then had an alignment done. Surprisingly, the car still makes a subtle rattle sort of noise when I turn the steering wheel. Even the Subaru technician that looked at the vehicle doesn't know what the noise is."

Anonymous A., PA (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NV (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i Unsure)

"Thumping noise when going over potholes, etc. This continued for 4 or 5 months because repair shop could not determine the cause. Finally replaced both rear struts and mounts, and that resolved the issue."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MO (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru dealer said rear wheel bearings are pretty much a wear item with Subarus and both of our Subarus needed them around 100k miles."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I started hearing rumble from the rear, turns out rear bearings going, mechanic couldnt loosen so he had to cut them off, was a few hundred dollars"

Anonymous, ME (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Wheel bearings were noisy and all four were replaced before they could fail. The Forester is driven in some harsh conditions including very long and steep mountain driveways. I use the X- mode to descend these driveways. Theres also times when I have to ford creeks up to 18 inches deep."

Anonymous A., NY (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My Forester sounded like there was an airplane chasing it. It needed both rear wheel bearings replaced. Although it didn't literally prevent me from driving the car, the mechanic said it was extremely dangerous to drive without getting it replaced because the wheel could seize and be catastrophic so I didn't really have a choice to drive away without getting it fixed."

Anonymous A., FL (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It wasn't cooling as much, I thought it just needed recharged. And it was just a few months past the extended warranty. But that was my fault because it wasn't cooling as well for a while, but I kept putting it off."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "Replacement needed."

    Anonymous A., CA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Condenser

"Last summer ac wasnt getting cold, mechanic replaced condenser (I think it was condenser!) still doesnt feel real cold! Its going back!"

Anonymous, ME (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Stopped blowing cool air; this was summertime 2023. Condenser had a crack and needed to be replaced. Dealer diagnosed and ordered part (1st visit to dealer); part arrived, dropped off car for service and got a loaner (2nd visit), picked up car and returned loaner (3rd visit). AC has worked fine since."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"About the same time that cooling performance decreased, the air that was blowing started smelling like moldy dirty socks. I took it to the dealer and found both the evaporator and condenser needed to be replaced. I was quite upset because the complimentary inspection U get every six months always indicated there was no problem with the cooling system. They explained this was not a check of the AC that would have disclosed these problems. They did, however give me a substantial discount on the repair, given I had followed manufacturer mtce suggestions exactly and had brought it to the dealership every six months since buying the vehicle nine years ago."

    Refrigerant leaks

    "Evaporator leaked, and was replaced"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Air blowing warm air.Subaru service advisor said it would cost me $129 to check what was wrong but they would credit me back if I had it repaired there. The problem was behind the There Was a leak in the system.Service advisor mentioned I might want to call Subaru customer service because of my low mileage. The bill was going to be $1400 to repair.I called customer service and they said even though the car was 7 years old with low mileage they would pay $1000 towards the bill. Great service and company to deal with."

Anonymous A., FL (2016 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"All refrigerant leaked out; car wouldn't accept new refrigerant or stop-leak. Dealer's cost to diagnose the problem was $170, and over $600 to fix it. Car shouldn't have had this problem at current mileage. Problem is not fixed."

    Anonymous A., PA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Display screen freezes up

"Touchscreen wont respond sometimes. Had this issue before and it seemed to be resolved, but I am now experiencing the issue again."

    Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's not a problem with the display, but rather the touch screen does not work. This makes it hard to change between audio inputs such as radio, cd, and flash drive, and between radio stations. The Subaru garage said it would cost $3000 to fix it. Not worth it, but annoying."

    Anonymous, HI (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen of the infotainment system often either freezes up or cycles though settings as though it has a mind of its own. It seems to happen more when the car is hot from sitting in the sun."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"Radio/camera unit had to be replaced."

    Anonymous A., NV (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It was less expensive to buy a new radio/entertainment unit than to replace the screen"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A little over a year ago, the display/radio (Subaru calls it the head-unit) would occasionally reboot or remain blank and unresponsive anytime the car was started. The other times it would function normally. Over the past 8+ months, the head-unit began to reboot or remain blank and unresponsive more often. About 5 months ago the head-unit began to reboot or remain blank and unresponsive 14 out of 15 times the car was started. The other 1 of 15 times it turned on immediately and 'normally'. In all cases, if the head-unit became active or if it remained blank/unresponsive, it would remain in that state for the duration of the time the car remained 'on'. Turning off the car and removing the key, whether for 30 seconds or 30 hours, and then starting it is no guarantee the state of the head-unit will improve. If the head-unit is blank/unresponsive, the two USB ports in the car are also unresponsive and will not even charge a device. However, the display on the head-unit will always show the image from the backup camera whether or not the head-unit is functioning. If the head-unit is blank and unresponsive, the display will only show the backup image, and not the red & yellow marker lines that are projected onto the display. The issue with the head-unit remains unresolved. I have researched others findings/actions on internet sites, but I have not yet taken the car to a Subaru dealer."

Anonymous A., WI (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Other in-car electronics problem

"Battery dies if interior lights are on automatic"

    Anonymous A., OR (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I live in Arizona and when the temperature gets over 103 (which is often in the summer) the screen unit starts to go haywire and beep or stop working or work erratically. I think I might be able to continue driving but the continual beeping and changing and flickering display is quite a distraction. I've had it replaced twice with a used unit, because it's quite expensive to get a new one, and both times new problems emerged. I am planning to take it to the dealer to have another try before the weather gets too hot"

Maybe just a loose connection that was fixed when I reinstalled the original module as I looked for another replacement. Shelved for now."

    Door handle

Anonymous, LA (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other body problem

"The driver and passenger seat sensors were replaced under a recall. When the interior was detailed about a month later, the passenger seat sensor began to act intermittently. I assumed it was because the seat got wet during the detailing. However, in recently found online comments from several Subaru owners who indicated their passenger seat sensor failed after the recall replacement. Based on owners' comments, it seems Subaru dealers first response is to say the seat must have gotten wet. Many online say their seat did not get wet. I know mine did so I have little to stand on with Subaru. Some wetness a seat and sensor should be able to tolerate. This issue remains intermittent."

Anonymous A., WI (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The passenger airbag sensor in the seat doesn't always work and shows that their passenger seat belt is off even if someone is sitting in the seat, occurs about 30% of the time someone is in the seat. Have been told it's the sling sensor that needs to be replaced but that requires the whole seat to be replaced and is very expensive. I will be contacting Subaru of America for help on it. It shouldn't be an issue with only 50,000 miles on the car."

Anonymous A., CA (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"As before the problem was the subject of a recall and was claimed to be corrected but persists. the dealer, Sonora Ford/Subaru has offered fix the problem for $1600 without explanation of why it is not a failed recall repair, the factory rep has offered to share that cost, still without assurance that the actual cause is addressed."

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Last year, I reported the same problem. This is THE SECOND RECURRENCE. After 1st rebuild in spring of 2023, within 3500 miles, 2(!) months, the engine failed AGAIN. Complete breakdown. Had to have it towed to the dealer, Subaru of Kings Automall, Cincinnati, and the engine had to be rebuilt a second time. I now have no faith in the car. Since the second rebuild, about 12 months ago now, Ive just been waiting for it to fail again. The dealer did cover the 2nd rebuild under the warranty of the 1st rebuild, including towing. I am angry at Subaru about this. Ill be happy when we sell this car. After 1st rebuild I wrote to Subaru about it, as it cost some $6200 to repair. Subaru responded (paraphrased) tough cookies; out of warranty. Very angry. VIN JF2SJAFC2GH513129 The car was correctly maintained. Never missed scheduled maintenance, always had any needed work done at the dealer. Why did the engine fail at approx 119200 miles?!?!?! (Original rebuild January 2023, 2nd rebuild May 2023)"
