    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Originally, the exhaust leak was the only issue. When I took my vehicle in for the 108,000 mile service and they did a further inspection beyond the exhaust leak, they discovered the catalytic converter had problems as well. This was all covered by Subaru's extended warranty of the exhaust system that was sent out sometime within the past year. They knew about the issue. That extended warranty covering that covered the $4000+ I would have needed to pay out of pocket."

Anonymous A., TX (2017 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I believe it was due to the manifold problem that the converter had to be replaced"

    Anonymous A., NY (2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Exhaust leaks

"The problem must have started over a year ago. The vehicle went from a quiet start to getting gradually louder each time it started. When I went in for my 108,000 mile service the exhaust leak and converter were noticed. Subaru knew about this issue. It was covered by an extended warranty sent out within the past year. The $4000+ issue was covered. The loud noise when it starts is no longer present."

    Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Battery didnt check put during routine service. Replaced because of a recall. This was our second battery. Several years ago our first battery went dead and was hard to even jump. That was before recalls."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We've had trouble with the 2017 Forester battery since we bought the car. It barely has the CCA for below zero F and really does not like -40F, even with a battery warmer. Subaru replaced the battery at 13,713 miles, but it died fairly quickly and Subaru replaced it again at 14,336 miles. That battery was always weak, so I decided to replace it with a CR recommended Walmart battery last fall before our cold (-40 to -50 F winters) at 29,626 miles. That battery has worked well so far. I believe Subaru has a tech bulletin regarding the SOS system searching for 3G mobile networks draining the battery, but we have never opted for the SOS service."

Anonymous A., AK (2017 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Third Battery replacement counting the original when the car was new. Passenger power window had to be re-programmed and ownes manual does not tell you. Owner has to research for the "FIX.""

    Other electrical system problem

"In the past 5 years my batteryhas died just because I was sitting in the car with the key in the ignition and NOTHING turned on. Subaru replaced the battery once and I replaced it twice more. They just sent me a letter on a 7 year old car about this wiring problem. The screen never shuts off and drains the battery. This is a wiring defect. They did not RECALL, but said they will cover future expenses. It has come when I waited in the car during my granddaughter during her volleyball practices. Then needed roadside assistance to restart the car with a car full of tired young girls. Cery annoying. I now remove the key as soon as the car is parked."

    Tire pressure monitor

"The new TPMS sensor would not be recognized by the vehicle. This also affected the keyless entry because a control module went bad and had to be replaced. Fortunately, when we bought it my wife insisted on buying an extended warranty which ended up saving us far more than it cost us."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Tire pressure monitor showed low pressure, even though I verified that the pressure was correct. I took it to the dealer and they determined tat a module was faulty. It had been damaged by a water leak in the body."

    Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The tire pressure Sensor in one wheel bad. Dash light ICON STAYED ON. Sensor replaced but did not solve problem. The key fobs quit working, It took a NINE HUNDRED DOLLAR COMPUTER to make operable. That makes a low tire icon on your dash cost over $1,200 to tell you you have a low tire. THAT IS RIDICULOUS!Fortunately the Dealer Director of Maintenance dis a GOODwill "fix" for $10o, but it coxt me about 8 hours and I still have to go back because they neglected to reset the second key fob."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While on a recent trip, the navigation system became unresponsive with the display jumping to multiple screens. Touching the screen to back to navigation wouldn't work, screen just kept jumping to other screens or wouldn't respond. It happened a few additional times since then. It still happens occasionally, but I haven't had it looked at. I don't use the navigation when close to home."

Anonymous A., CA (2017 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"From time to time the dash board "lights up" for no reason. Believed to be tied to gas cap. Sometimes opening and closing the gas cap will fix the problem. Unable to use cruise control and some safety features when this happens. Problem can last up to 3 days. Have not brought car in for repair for this problem. Also, the lane departure warning light and the precollision braking system turn off for no reason in the middle of driving."

"The check engine light never went on until after the car stopped running. Dealer blamed us saying we put oil in the transmission fluid which was untrue. Wouldnt honor our warranty because they engine light was one when it came in but that happened after it broke no warning before and we had just had it in the shop for something I cant remember what. We had to go to Subaru of America who fixed it as a courtesy not under warranty. Basically trying to say we broke the car which was not true. The 2012 Subaru had the piston fail with 112k miles. No warning on that either. Will never buy a Subaru again. We have had two lemons"

    Premature brake wear

"Had to replace the rear rotors and pads the fronts were fine. As a vehicle accident deconstructionist I found it strange that the rear brakes would be completely wore down and the front brakes fine. Since 60-70% of braking is done by the front brakes. The dealer agreed but stated that Subaru engineered the brake system to wear back before the front! I still dont think he is right!"

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
