    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"I started hearing my A/C making more noise when running, when I brought it in, they said my compressor clutch needed to be replaced. It was the original parts in the car and I run my A/C quite a lot, so didn't seem unreasonable after 7 years of ownership."

    Anonymous, MN (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It died and had to be completely replaced. I live in Texas. Enough said."

    Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"AC Evaporator Core and Sensor replaced at 36,000 miles. Pretty disappointed the AC did not last that long. It was the first car I had to replace the AC in. I have had cars hit 200,000 miles without having to replace the AC."

Anonymous, (2018 Subaru Forester Limited Unsure)

"started going out summer of 2024. 1st dealership said nothing was wrong. making a high whining sound."

Anonymous, IN (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My wife complained that the air conditioning was not operating properly. We took it to the dealer and they confirmed that the compressor and evaporator needed replaced. That work represents the vast majority of the monies spent in the last year for maintenance."

Anonymous A., FL (2018 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""After 6 years my A/C quit working properly. It would cool if I was driving on the highway, but since most of my driving is in city driving , it didnt cool. I didnt get it fixed until this spring. Ive never had the A/C go out on any of my Hondas or VWs. The mechanic said it had been a problem with this years model.""

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to replace the air conditioner. $1,000. The EyeSight system has a class action."

Anonymous, CO (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C started blowing less cold air until it was only blowing ambient temperature air."

Anonymous, LA (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"AC was not working. Took it to repair shop. At first they thought it was a leaking value. Upon repairing that still didn't work. Had to replace the entire AC system."

    Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The compressor would kick in and out so the AC would only blow cold air for a few minutes before it started blowing warm air. The AC had to be turned off for 5-10 minutes before it would start working again. In summary, the compressor would not work for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. We dealt with it for about 6 months and then had it replaced to fix the problem."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Unable to maintain temperatures inside vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The A/C compressor locked up to the point that the serpentine belt couldn't turn the pulley anymore. This happened about 1 year after being out of the manufacturer's warranty. Subaru issued a bulletin in 2016 about potentially faulty A/C compressors, but my Subaru was manufactured in 2017 and still had a compressor that failed. Cost to replace was about $900.""

Anonymous A., MI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I just replaced it and shop was surprised it had gone out with less than 79,000 miles."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Needed new one. Old one didnt work. Cant remember technical explanation."

Anonymous A., MI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""At about 58,000 miles the AC compressor went out releasing fine particles into the refrigerant system causing the whole thing to be replaced. If it wasnt for the extended warranty it would have cost me $3,500 to fix""

Anonymous A., AL (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Cooling effectiveness lessened gradually, noticeable over about a month, then finally failed altogether. The repair shop tried to recharge the system, which didn't fix the problem. The eventual repair was pricey, even though the cost didn't include the first, simpler, attempt.""

Anonymous, WA (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The A/C was blowing hot air all the time. It never cooled off the vehicle."

Anonymous A., MA (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""I spent $650.00 last summer on repairs when it stopped cooling. It worked great for the rest of the season. During our first heat spell this year I found there was no cooling again. The mechanic who did the work last year checked it out without charging me and believes the compressor is going out. He recommended that I go to the dealership since the condenser was replaced in 2022 due to a recall. He thought there might be some warranty issues. The car goes to the dealership tomorrow, so we will see what happens.""

Anonymous, WA (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, FL (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Driving off the Carvana lot I did not feel that the A/C was as cool as it should be compared to the other two Subaru vehicles Ive owned but I was not familiar with the controls, either. Over the next week the air blew warmer until the compressor finally gave out.""

Anonymous, FL (2018 Subaru Forester Premium Unsure)

Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Anonymous A., IL (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C performance degraded rapidly over a few days in June 2024 and finally stopped blowing cold air. Took it to the dealer who diagnosed compressor failure. Compressor was replaced. A/C worked fine after that."

    Anonymous A., MO (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C compressor failed 2 years ago. Dealer misdiagnosed the problem and just recharged the system. Independent auto repair shop replaced compressor. Just now, 2 years later, compressor has failed again."

Anonymous, VT (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Blower (fan) motor

"The ac on my car is absolutely great! I use my ac all the time, sometimes even on some winter days! With the blower always running (on high usually) when Im in the car, I was actually very happy it lasted as long as it did and was the only thing I got fixed under my extended warranty before it just ran out. I love my car and durability is always very high on my list when I buy things and this SUV has shown that it is very durable and well manufactured!"

Anonymous A., NJ (2018 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Condenser

"AC wasn't working. Upon fixing a leaking valve the Condenser wasn't working."

    Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Evaporator

"It was determined that the evaporator needed replaced by the dealer at the same time as the compressor."

Anonymous A., FL (2018 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Not cooling"

Anonymous A., FL (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"One day my cooling was intermittent. I took it in they couldnt find a problem and returned it. Even driving home had same problem. Brought it back and they took it for a drive and found problem. There was an intermittent leak that caused compressor to go on and off it also ended up because of a leak destroyed the radiator which also had to be replaced."

    Heater system

""The heating system is subpar. The heating to the front passengers legs is weak, as is the heating for the backseat passengers""

Anonymous A., NM (2018 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other climate system problem

""From day one the A/C didn't always come on or it would take 30-60 minutes before it did. I mentioned it the first two to three service checks and was always told they couldn't find anything wrong. About two service checks ago I mentioned it again, now out of warranty. I was told that it would cost $500.00 just to check it and more if a problem was found. I decided to live with it. I have always service my cars at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle hoping to have a better relationship. I am rethinking that. I am a Senior+ citizen on a tight budget and tired of having to fight for what's right.""

Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The AC stopped cooling. I brought the car in for dx. The condenser or evap. quit working and then replacement cracked and had to be replaced w/in 30 days. Apparently, Subaru is aware that replacement parts are poorly made and often replaced. I'm NOT happy with it.""

"Needed Lower Control Arm bushings replaced."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The bushings in the control arms were faulty almost from the date of manufacture, and in fact there was a service bulletin issued on the subject about six months after we purchased the car. Our dealer did NOT notify us of this defect - which could have been corrected under warranty. The bushings finally failed eight months ago while we were on a road trip, resulting in severe steering vibration at highway speeds, and compromising the control rods. We had to have the whole assemblies replaced, at a cost of almost $1,000 out-of-pocket, since by then we were out of warranty. Needless to say, we will not be going back to that dealer. Apart from that incident, however, we LOVE the car."

Anonymous A., NC (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, KY (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous A., CA (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car steering wheel started vibrating when I reached speeds about 55 mph or higher. Hard to determine problem. Finally determined that it was lower control arm bushing that needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This car is seven years old and I was shocked the power steering went out and also somehow fried the motherboard for the steering, having to replace it entirely and cost us $1700 worth of repairs. And then later, we had wheel bearing trouble which cost us more on this same car within a couple of months."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Shocks or struts

"During routine maintenance the Subaru mechanic noticed that the rear struts were leaking oil. Subaru replaced both rear struts and strut mounts. I had purchased an extended warranty at the time I purchased the Subaru so I was responsible for the first $100. Side note, at 18,000 miles both front axle boots were found to be torn. Subaru replaced them at no charge."

    Anonymous, CA (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Wheel bearings

"Right front wheel bearing needs replacement. This is the second wheel bearing replacement over life of the car. This seems excessive, given the relatively low mileage on the vehicle."

Anonymous A., MD (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"One of the rear wheel bearings had to be replaced."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "replaced both rear wheel bearings"

    Anonymous A., FL (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car is only seven years old. I expect routine maintenance, but not two costly repairs one right after the other. We had power steering go out and then the wheel bearings went bad and cost $1000+ more in repairs. So a seven year old car cost us over $2700 in repairs and the tires are wearing out and will probably also need replacing before winter."

"My trunk would not open from inside the car or pressing the button of the trunk this past April. Was told the trunk was filled with water and it affected the part that opened the trunk. Repair cost was approx. $4000. The repair had something to do with sun roof and the new part to open trunk. I declined getting it done. Was told by a manager pollen could have blocked up the drip lines too. I never saw any evidence anywhere in my car that had water damage. Also told they could blow out the drip lines but was a big job. I asked if they periodically cleaned it out during routine oil changes once a year since price to fix it was so high but they do not. Took car home & next day I automatically hit button to open trunk and it opened. Also opened from inside the car I never saw the region they said was flooded. Its in the trunk door. Didnt know how to open it."

    Other in-car electronics problem

""About two services ago the Windshield Washer Empty display came up on my dashboard. I did not mention it at the time because a bracket on the reservoir had come loose and it was rattling around. I thought the mechanic would see the warning when he got in the car and drove it to the shop. (And again after returning it up front for me) The service was performed, including reattaching the reservoir, paid my bill and left. No comment from the service people. As I was driving home noticed the warning was still on. At that point I did not want to turn around and go back. The reservoir no longer rattled and I did check the wiper controls which did activate the wash system squirting fluid onto the windshield. I did Google the proplem, found other comments about the same issue and that the dealerships wanted to charge a hefty fee for repair. I also found a fix about draining the reservoir and letting warm white vinegar sit for awhile in the reservoir, drain again and fill with washer fluid. The poster said that this fixed the display problem. This is on my bucket list. I did submit comments about this either directly or in response to a survey, to Subaru. I have never received a reply. If Honda had received these comments I would have received Mea Culpa's, and bring the car back in. As noted in my original survey I have sort of a love/hate relationship with my car. I always wanted to try a Subaru, and based on Consumer Reports comments about head room and safety I did so. Also in those comments I have buyers remorse because of the outstanding service treatment I had received from Honda for many years. If I could have afforded another Honda with the bells and whistles I have on the Subaru I would have purchased another Honda.""

    What Owners Say

    Antilock braking system (ABS)

""The ABS sensor switch malfunctioned after a routine repair. While I waited for it to be replaced, I had "conventional" braking (no ABS) and no cruise control.""

    Premature brake wear

"Second time front and rear breaks had to be replaced"

    Pulsation or vibration

"The car vibrated somewhat and getting the brakes serviced fixed the problem."

    Anonymous, NY (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Car would vibrate when braking above 55 mph. There was common squeeking and grinding when brakes were depressed, starting about a year after purchase. It was common to see rust on the rotors through the rims. Brakes had been checked 3 times by dealer during normal maintenence, and maybe because it was under warranty they never found any problems with the brakes. The vibrations became concerning enough to me that I paid out of pocket to have a full brake service, pads, rotors, alignment. Since then the problem has completely gone away. Car is otherwise been solid and really dependable.""

Anonymous A., VA (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Rotors

"Brakes began pulsating at about 144000 miles. Finally had rear rotors replaced at 146000 miles."

Anonymous, VT (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There wasn't any vibrations. The brakes would 'fade', the brake pedal would gradually sink towards the floor."

Anonymous, CO (2018 Subaru Forester Touring Unsure)

"See previous comments about the Vibration issue."

    What Owners Say

    Loose exterior trim or moldings

"ridiculously expensive to replace a part that should not fall off in the first place."

Anonymous, VT (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"paint is faded on roof, rear hatch and hood"

    Anonymous, CA (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Rust

"About 2 years ago we noticed rust at the top of the windshield. Very expensive repair. Subaru would not do anything about it. Eventually we had a serious stone chip and had to get the windshield replaced. We had the rust area repaired at that time by a reputable body shop. In 2020s cars should not be having this type of rust damage especially on a car that was about 5 years old."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Discovered in body below driver door. Body man fixed."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We noticed rust on the roof of the car in year three of the car. In year four, we noticed rust on the inside of each door. The car had a really poor paint job. Subaru refused to repair the roof rust but they did take care of the inside of the doors. It was a bummer since it was only three years old and garage kept. All my other cars are used and outside in the sun all day without any rust issues."

    "the retraction is very iffy"

Anonymous, VA (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Hatch strut fastener on hatch broke off while lifting. Accumulated road material resulted in corrosion and frozen joint causing fracture during operation. Got pushback from service writer when I suggested this device should have been cleaned and appropriately lubed at service events. Life events have made it difficult to schedule corrective service."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
