    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"A/c compressor went bad and started to leak freon. Common problem with Subarus"

Anonymous, HI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This problems started years before I even got the car, I think in about 2019. Something happened where the AC would run for a while then something would "freeze" and it would blow hot air. My parents (who I bought the car from) didn't mind, but it finally got so bad I ended up getting the compressor replaced in 2023."

    Anonymous, NY (2018 Subaru Forester)

"The a/c began blowing warm air and needed to be replaced. Then it only worked for a short period and required to be fixed again. They found plastic bags and other debris. I think the mechanic at the dealer put them there."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Just stopped working"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Subaru Forester Unsure)

"AC compressor is very noisy and cooling is intermittent. This just started a few days ago and I haven't had it repaired yet."

Anonymous A., MD (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Failled Just few months after warranty"

    Anonymous A., QC (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The air compressor and condendenser went out out and was covered by warranty. Then a year later went out and I had to pay over $1,000 to have it fixed."

    Anonymous A., (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My ac began to stop last summer but always came back on. This summer it is doing the same thing, but not coming back on by itself. My local mechanic is replacing it because his estimate was $900 less than the Subaru dealership."

    Anonymous, NH (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C compressor failed at 84,000 miles and needs replacing."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Of course the A/C failed when we were over 750 miles away from home, in August, during a heat wave. Ocracoke, the island we were staying on in NC had garages, but none did any A/C work! We had to wait ten days until we were near Buxton, NC to find a mechanic to replace the compressor. He didn't accept charge cards though, so I had to withdraw over $1000 from an ATM over the course of several days!"

    Anonymous A., NY (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"No A/C at beginning of this season. Compressor was locked up & had to be replaced."

    Anonymous A., NJ (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It had been a intermittent problem since the first year of owning it, but the dealership could never find the fault. After the warranty had expired, they were happy to fix the problem for $1,500. A stern letter resulted in a refund from Subaru."

    Anonymous, CA (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It failed and needed to be replaced. Replacement cost was $1500. I contacted Subaru and they agreed to pay for the repair."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The A/C compressor belt broke as we were coming off the interstate--heard a loud screech and engine started smoking. Unfortunately could not get it back to local dealership until after hours, but they had it fixed within the day. I do wonder if this had been an issue that was building up--my significant other and I noticed that the cabin air conditioning fluctuated during a long road trip months before this happened, but after the trip it wasn't that much of an issue. I had also had multiple "multi-point inspections" with Subaru during regular maintenance in the interim, and the issue wasn't caught beforehand (so now I'm not quite sure what all the multi-point inspections entail...)."

    Anonymous, OH (2018 Subaru Forester)

"Compressor failed. It was replaced in one day under warranty. Problem solved."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CO (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Contacted my service center when the AC was not properly cooling. Center inspected and informed me the compressor was "failing" and would need to be replaced."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cooling was weak last fall, completely dead this spring, dealer replace A/C compressor which fixed the problem. No leaks found, just a bad compressor."

Anonymous A., MI (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Compressor issue is causing A/C to randomly stop working and blow warm damp air while driving, even if temp is set to lowest setting. Problem is still ongoing."

Anonymous A., NJ (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The AC compressor went on this car, about 12 months ago. This shouldn't have occurred on a 5 yr old car."

Anonymous A., NY (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C compressor failed and was replaced; A/C now works fine."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Problem started in Summer of 2023. AC would work on start up and slowly decline. It would be blowing warm air within one hour of driving. It was diagnosed as a bad compressor. Had it replaced with after market part.It took two replacements to finally fix problem. Not a Subaru issue."

Anonymous, (2018 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had no AC for 2 summers. The local repair shop added freon that restored the cool air, but not as cool as it was before. At the start of warm weather the same shop diagnosed the need of a new compressor, & ordered one that never came. A Spring tune-up @ a Subaru dealer diagnosed the need for a new compressor @ $1600. On drive home,no AC!!! On return visit dx. was Wrong dx of bad compressor, it really needed a new condenser!!! I had to pay $100 for some discount to get out of there. The AC was back."

"It just stopped working, just as the weather was warming up!"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Subaru Forester Unsure)
    Heater system

"Our Forester is the basic model and the Heater system is poor; takes a good 30 minutes at highway speed to feel the warmth. But basic or not the heater should work better. I think that Subaru should not sale such basic vehicle. Subaru should be better than Basic. Nonetheless, I like the Subaru Forester. I am thinking on replacing the basic 2018 Forester and get a 2014 Premium Forester."

    Anonymous, MI (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"There was a crack in the pipe in the catalytic converter. When my car was turned on and receiving air from outside, I was smelling emissions inside the vehicle, which is what clued me into the issue. I took it to my mechanic, and he said replacing it would be $4000 because there wasnt any Second market products yet. I looked up online and saw that there was an extended warranty for this known specific issue and I took my car to the Subaru dealership. Even though my car was past the 80,000 miles covered under the warranty, Subaru replaced the catalytic converter for free."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Subaru Forester Limited Unsure)

"My Forester started running really loudly in the summer of 2023. I took it in and they told me the catalytic converter had cracked. Luckily, this was a known issue and they replaced it for free. If it wasn't covered, it would have cost over $5k!"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Exhaust manifold

"Chronic problem with my car running loud. Kept complaining about it when I took it in. Finally was discovered to be the exhaust manifold. Started probably first year I got it, 2018. Problem identified and repaired 2024. The car still runs much louder than even my oldest 2010 colbalt. Disappointed. Not sure if the problem with the car or the repair center at the dealership. Had other problems that needed multiple repairs."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a crack in the manifold which made it very noisy. It was covered by manufacture extended warranty. If it hadn't been covered it would have cost $4,500 to fix. It was within 1,000 miles of not being covered."

"Replaced battery 3 times. Dealer says there is no drain but it goes dead because I connected it incorrectly"

Anonymous A., NC (2018 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru has replaced our battery twice. They acknowledge that some have a battery drain. Our batteries have drained multiple times to the point where the car sits in the garage overnight and requires a jump in the morning. Just had it checked out a few weeks ago and they couldnt find anything draining the battery. But they told me its a problem with the OEM batteries."

    Anonymous, FL (2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"For the past couple of years the battery would completely die due to a parasitic drain. Dealership could find no problem and I had to resort to keeping the car plugged into a battery charger in the garage. I was finally told that Subaru knew there was a data module causing this drain. I waited several months for the dealership to get the part and finally had it replaced. If I hadnt purchased an extended warranty when I bought the car the fix would have cost me nearly $2000."

"Subaru found my cam carriers to be leaking. It cost $3,100 to fix this leak. The engine had to be removed to fix this leak. This happened at 58600 miles. My ac compressor began failing at 58000 +- miles. It is being replaced as I type. This is my 3rd Subaru, my second Forester. Other minor engine problem

"One evening in May 2023 leaving work all lights came on the dash, safety features, traction control, and everything else beyond basic operation was disabled. I was able to drive home, but all the lights were distracting. The dealership said it was carbon buildup and they cleaned it for free since the car was low mileage. I've since found out this is a known issue with my car's engine, and it will likely recur every 30k miles or so. I plan to sell the car before the next time because it is an expensive fix. I also now know that the first symptom is rough idle at startup, which last time started a few months before it got bad enough to trip an error in the computer."

"MY DAUGHTERS WERE DRIVING NORTH ON CA HIGHWY 5 TO LOOK AT PROSPECTIVE COLLEGES. BEFORE THEY LEFT, I HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED AND A THOROUGH MAINTENCE DONE, AS A PRECAUTION. DRIVING, AS THE SUN WENT DOWN THE TRANSMISSION BROKE APART, LOCKING ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES AND THE SUBARU ALMOST ROLLED OVER. MY DAUGHTER GOT IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD NEAR THE APPROPRIATELY NAMED LOST HILLS. IT WOULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 5 MPH. CLOSEST CITY WAS BAKERSFIELD. THERE WAS A GARAGE CLOSING AT 6 AND THE MECHANIC CAME AND SAID THE TRANSMISSION HAD A "CATASTROPHIC BREAK." I MANAGED TO GET A AAA TOWTRUCK TO TRY TO ASSIST. (I HAPPENED TO BE CAMPING IN DEATH VALLEY,BUT AAA TOOK THE CALL AND UNDERSTOOD THE EMERGENCY.) IT WAS PITCHBLACK BY THEN. AND A FARMWORKERS TEMPORARY SITE WAS NEARBY. TWO YOUNG WOMEN STRANDED IN A CAR AT NIGHT ATTRACTED SOME ATTENTION. MY DAUGHTERS ROLLED UP THEIR WINDOWS AND LOCKED THE DOORS. THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED BUT WASN'T EQUIPPED TO TOW, ONLY TO START A STALL MY WIFE IN LOS ANGELES DROVE OUR 2021 SUBARU OUTLANDER TO THEM WHILE THE AAA DRIVER REMAINED WITH THE GIRLS. (YEAH AAA!) FINALLY MY WIFE FOUND THEM. THE INITIAL AAA DRIVER LEFT AFTER CALLING FOR THE APPROPRIATE TOWTRUCK. THE GIRLS TRANSFERRED THEIR LUGGAGE INTO THE 2021 SUBARU OUTLANDER AND CONTINUED NORTH FOR THEIR COLLEGE TOURS. MY WIFE'S TURN TO WAIT IN THE LOCKED FORRESTER. A TRUE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED FROM A LOCAL INDEPENDENT COMPANY CONTACTED BY AAA BECAUSE OF THE EMERGENCY NATURE OF THE SITUATION (OTHERWISE THE WAIT WOULD HAVE BEEN HOURS.) THIS TOW TRUCK DRIVER DID NOT EXPECT TO BE TOWING A CAR TO LOS ANGELES. HIS OFFICE SAID HE COULDN'T BUT HE OVERRODE THEIR ORDERS AND TOWED THE CAR, WITH MY WIFE IN THE CAB, BACK TO LA. (THE NAME HE GAVE TO MY WIFE IS G-DOG AND HE IS A HERO TO US. I TRIED TO REACH HIM TO SEND A GRATUITY BUT HAD NO LUCK. G-DOG, IF YOU READ THIS, CALL.) SO ALL'S WELL THAT END'S WELL, RIGHT? WELL, IT TURNS OUT THE TRANSMISSION ON THESE FORRESTERS GOES OUT MORE OFTEN THAN YOU'D EXPECT, SO THE COMPANY HAS INCREASED THE WARRANTY ON TRANSMISSIONS TO 100,000 MILES. MY SUBARU BROKE DOWN AT 102,000 MILES. THE COMPANY DECLINED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY. I ENDED UP HAVING TO FIND A USED TRANSMISSION FOR $3000 AND OUR LOCAL MECHANICS REPLACED THE ORIGINAL. ASIDE FROM LEAKS, IT APPEARS THAT IT'S DRIVING WELL FOR A USED SUBARU. UPON RETIREMENT A FEW YEARS AGO, I'D STUDIED CONSUMER REPORTS FOR GUIDANCE AND CHOSE THE FORRESTER BASED ON YOUR RATING. MISTAKE. NEXT TIME, IT'S BACK TO TOYOTA."
