    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Stopped working, causing a multitude of dashboard warning lights. Some non-critical functions stopped working, including all cameras and sensors."

Anonymous A., MO (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The catalytic converter appeared as failed in the car computer in early 2023. I used a scanner to read the code. When I first brought it to Subaru they said the code was likely an error and they cleared it. It came back almost immediately and I scheduled an appointment again. This time they said it needed a firmware update and they charged me for this and cleared the fault. It came back almost immediately again, I brought it back, they checked it, said it was fine and cleared the fault again. I took it to an independent garage who immediately told me the cat was completely fried. I took their report back to Subaru and they finally put it on a lift and came back, with great surprise, wow, youll never guess, it needs a new cat! But we have to order one in It took almost a month to order, (they forgot to for a couple weeks), then finally scheduled the service, which rather conveniently took place exactly at the expiration of our standard warranty. They broke the news to me that it wouldnt be covered, but then I told them I had the Subaru extended warranty, which caused the service managers jaw to visibly drop. What a terrible experience. Ill never buy another Subaru In This Are (Moncton, NB) again. If I lived somewhere else I would, though."

Anonymous A., NB (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other exhaust system problem

"Subaru offered an extended warranty on the TRV valve because of a known issue but did not issue a recall. This seems like it should have been a recall."

Anonymous, CT (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other/unsure

"It started shortly after I bought the car in 2019. The battery kept dying. They gave me a new battery but the problem came back about 2 years later. I kept having to call roadside assistance to jump start my car. Finally last year they said the battery was inadequate to support all the electrical systems and I ended up having to purchase a larger battery and pan to the tune of $700. It appears to have solved the problem. We will see."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It needs a battery. The dealer says it takes a very specific battery. The cost is $430.00. Yikes!"

Anonymous, PA (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, OH (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Battery failure several times at stop lights/stop signs. Car came to a dead stop and shut off completely. Turned out the original battery installed in vehicle was not adequate to handle all the demands of the various apps! It was scary. It seems that this oroblem was widespread, but I hadnt received any notice about it! My local Subaru dealer installed an upgraded battery at no charge, but new battery resulted in a choppier ride."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Subaru Forester Standard 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous A., WI (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the engine turning off at a light started to not work correctly, a few times it did not turn itself back on when I took my foot off the brake. It turned out to be a battery and software problem and the dealer replaced the battery and fixed the software free of charge."

Anonymous, IN (2019 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The thermo control valve suddenly failed, multiple trouble lights alerted me to contact Subaru immediately, which I did. I had to travel quite a distance to have it serviced and it was a major inconvenience but they fit me in right away, provided me with a loaner vehicle, and replaced the failed part with a new one on the same day. Subaru service was exemplary and the car is once again driving beautifully..."

Anonymous A., BC (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Failure of Thermo Control Valve causing all safety features to shutdown. While replacing the valve, the mechanic caused a fuel leak. Subaru paid for both repairs."

    "Rubber bushing on front supension"

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Serial battery failures. The battery would be found discharged if the car sat unused, garaged, for 2-3 days. The dealer replaced batteries with my extended warranty, sometimes a prorated copay, 3 or 4 times over half a year. Subaru was involved in a class action lawsuit over the failed design of the Starlink system that turned itself on and drained the battery at a high rate when the car was keyed off and locked up. The dealer wouldn't or couldn't discuss the problem in those terms, but after the third failure it seems some corrective updates or modifications have been done. The current battery has been stable for several months now."

    Anonymous A., (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine warning light came on while driving, with several lights blinking. Called the dealer and they had me come out to check it. The problem did not present itself while I was there, so I went home. Experienced problem again, dealer tested it, said it's the Thermal Control Valve and would be replaced under a new Subaru extended warranty specifically for that problem. Technician replaced the valve and engine warning light came on again! Tech determined that the new part was defective and replaced it again. No cost to me other than time and whatever potential damage has been done from the failed valve. Car is OK so far..."

"I needed new wiring harness because an animal ate thru the insulation and caused a short. I needed a new ECU computer because somehow it worked it's way loose and caused a check engine conditioned that caused the entire car to shut down while traveling at 65 miles an hour on Interstate 81."

Anonymous A., IL (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Telemetry drained the battery. Problem seemed to begin almost three years after bought car. Killed the OEM battery. Wife bought NAPA battery ($150) while I was away on trip. It was drained, too. Got letter from Subaru about battery. Took car to Subaru. NAPA battery no good! Must have our battery and since battery not OEM must pay full price ($400). I did research on Internet. Problem was Telemetry, not the batteries. Finally, I prevailed, almost. Subaru Company gave me a $900 reduced price to replace the Telemetry unit. There is still a drain of 0.4 volts during 24 hours after engine turned off. With a 0.05 volt drain forever. I live in mountains. Agency is 70 miles from my house. Several round trips and my time that were not paid for."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Many dash lights came on, replacing the Emission Check Valve solved the problem. Also, rust problem on frame below drivers door, Subaru refused to fix. Paid a body shop to fix it."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Over-the-air software update failed

"After installation of new software began I received an error message. The installation stopped and I was left with a totally non-functioning Infotainment system, including music, navigation, backup camera, etc. I called Subaru customer service and they attempted to walk me through a fix, which didn't work. I ended up sitting at a dealership for 2 hours, after which functionality was restored."

Battery replaced again. Service tech advised me that Subaru had elected to replace batteries as needed rather than do a recall for electical problems."

Anonymous, NM (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Battery wouldn't start car, despite trying to use a battery charger. Had previously had battery replaced under warranty for a similar reason. Persisted for many attempts over many days. However, dealer said it could not find a problem and it has worked reliably since. So there was a definite problem but it seems to have been some type of glitch that resolved itself (or perhaps was fixed during dealer diagnosis)."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had never previously had problems with my car's battery. However, the original battery was 5 years old. It died when I was visiting out of town relatives, and I went to Costco and bought a new one. Everything seemed fine. 5 days later, the new one died. It would not start one morning and when I measured it with a voltmeter it was less than 2 volts. I charged it up to 13 volts and saw that it was slowly decaying. An hour later it was back to under 2 volts and I could not start the car. I had it towed to Subaru. Before they would look at it. They required me to go to Subarubatterysettlement.com and get an application number. I did this, and they replaced my battery free. They did two checks looking for parasitic loads and found them both negative. I am in an electrical engineer and I am very skeptical that it is not something in the car causing this problem. That was the issue with the battery settlement filing. I am monitoring the battery and trying to find out what could have killed both batteries. By the way, did you know about the Subaru battery settlement issue? It seems to be something Subaru doesn't want to tell anybody until something goes wrong with their battery. Under the settlement I guess I can have my battery replaced multiple times in the next 2 years. However, if I have further problems, I will undoubtedly sell this car and not get another one. I am hoping that's not the final result."

    What Owners Say

    Other engine cooling problem

"Thermal control valve failed putting the car into limp mode, was able to barely get it home but it was not drivable beyond that. Replaced under TSB at no charge"

"Engine light on. Car ran rough. towed to dealership. Thermal control valve failed. This was a warranty repair on a 4yr old car. Well done Subaru!"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a component deep inside the engine called the Thermo Control Valve. One day without warning, car was driving and all the dash lights came on. We stopped immediately, restarted and were able to drive the short distance back home. Onboard diagnostic (OBD) reader indicated a Thermal Valve. So the next day we had the car towed to dealer on a flatbed and the dealer replace the part under our extended warranty. They also noticed a leaking strut and replace that also. This was at 48,200 miles."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Overheating

"Coolant bypass valve was not operational causing engine to overheat. Independent repair shop did not find a problem because they could not read the Subaru secret codes. Eventually, Subaru covered repair by extending the warranty on the valve."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Thermostat

"While driving to the dealer for the other problem, my check engine light came on. When I arrived at the dealer I told them about the check engine and wanted it looked at. The kept the car for 24 hours and reported that there were several codes that popped up and they repaired what they could. As soon as I left the dealer, the check engine light came on again. I took the vehicle to my local mechanic who found the code for the tempeature control valve that was malfunctioned. I had it replaced at a cost of over $1000. The dealer would not reimburse for this repair since I took the vehicle off the lot. I found out later that the service center had erased the code when they checked out the car. Just recently I received a recall for that particular part and have submitted a reimbursement claim."

"Electronic thermostat failed when I was traveling. I was 700 miles away from home and 150 miles from the nearest Subaru dealer - which was closed. When the thermostat failed, the cruise control became inoperable, along with lane assist, and other safety features. It was a major inconvenience, to say the least!"

"Thermo control value failed. This caused the engine to overheat and all the electrics went haywire. This happened once. I took it to the Subaru service center and they fixed it. No problems since."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Subaru Forester Standard 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We had an engine light come on caused by a thermo control valve (TVC) glitch There was a recall on the TVC, but Subaru would only replace it IF there was a current engine light on. The next time the TVC caused a problem the car would no longer start - and we were stranded 2 1/2 hours from a dealer. An additional problem showed up on the computer-air control flapper valves were frozen open. I believe this problem was created by the computer signals from the TVC problems. The technicians would not officially say that. The intake manifold had to be replaced - $800 not covered by the TVC recall. I did receive a $500 Subaru service credit for my troubles."

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"A/C failed to blow cool air three times since our purchase of the vehicle. Seals were replaced twice and the problem was solved for some period of time. When it failed again in 2024, even though it was out of warranty, the dealer replaced the A/C condenser entirely without charge."

Anonymous A., PA (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Condenser failed but was covered under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Service Dept took almost 8 hours (included other repairs) and put dye in system to try and find leak. did not tell me I would have to bring it back. Compressor failed completely about a week later. Second repair took 3 days to fix (loaner provided)"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Automatic climate control

"Turned on the ac not cooling. Received a letter from Subaru that a sensor might affect my heating/cooling but this was not a recall. If this is a problem it would be fixed. All this just happened in the past two weeks and will know more this Wednesday when I go for service."

Anonymous A., NS (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other climate system problem

"I only clicked this as it seems the air conditioner issue involves more than simply a refrigerant leak."

Anonymous A., ON (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Control valve failed. Had multiple warning lights flashing. About 2 months ago, Subaru sent out a letter about the failure of this valve"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The AC stopped blowing cold air on the driver's side vents. According to Subaru, there was a leak between the firewall and the vent system. This required removal of the entire dashboard, which cost several thousand dollars to repair, mostly due to the labor of removing and replacing the dash"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Refrigerant leaks

"This is just a reference to the seal replacements done because of failure of a/c to blow cool air."

Anonymous A., PA (2019 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a leak caused by a corroded evaporator tube. The problem is not solved yet because this part is in back order. It is strange to have a problem like this on a 5 year old car. I live in Quebec where they put salt on the road when there is icy conditions. What I cant tell if this is a generalized propels with that specific part."

"A small valve that cost 20$ leak and to replace it and the refrigerant cost 650$!"

"Air conditioning didnt work at beginning of summer 2023. Dealer could not find leak but topped up Freon. Lasted for summer but didnt work again April 2024. In process of trying to find leak again and mechanic suspects a blockage in compressor but taking it back in a couple of weeks to see if dye can be spotted. Currently air conditioner not working despite top up of Freon."

    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

Anonymous, IL (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Have ab attached garage. If my ignition key accidentally gets hit, the tail gate lifts and gets caught on the overhead garage door steel supports thus easily scratches and dents the paint on the tail gate."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Somehow, the electronic lock for the back hatch has malfunctioned 3 times. Each time, because it's unlocked, it seems to drains the battery. I don't understand why because an unlocked door doesn't do that. Anyway, the first two times I had to have it jumped to be able to drive. After the second time, it was suggested to me to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes which I did the 3rd time it happened. And strangely enough, each time the battery was jumped and when I disconnected it myself, the lock began working again. I don't want to spend the $800+ that Subaru told me it would cost to replace the back hatch lock. My warranty has expired."

Anonymous A., IL (2019 Subaru Forester Unsure)
    Windows

"Auto up down window switches have failed. One was replaced under warranty, and the other I will do out of pocket."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"So many problems, but having the electric windows not work is the most stressful. They won't go all the way up, so we all stopped rolling down the windows. You try to close it, it pops down automatically. The other major issue is that the Car Play won't work. I have been to the dealership, with every recall asking about this, and they keep giving me the runaround. 1 times out of 10, the Car Play won't work ... which when you actually need the map is fairly huge. The dealers make up all these excuses that they lay upon me, "I didn't update." (I did). "I don't have Apple cables." (I do). This is one of the biggest reasons I will never buy a Subaru again. I need the Car Play to work as advertised."

"left strut went bad and the dealership replaced it for $50 even tho it was out of warranty. Normally a $600 repair."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Tire wear is uneven

"The thermal control valve failed in March and was replaced by Subaru last week - under warranty. (Subaru extended the warranty on TCV up to 150,000 miles or 15 years) For the tire wear - the rear tires are wearing on the inside due to not being able to correct the alignment. Subaru does not offer a solution for this problem, saying the alignment meets specifications. We will need to purchase an after market kit to correct the alignment at a cost of $500 plus labor. We also need to replace the tires prematurely due to the wear."

This was the thick rubber infused with metal threads and it made major noise when it banged. Subaru charged me ($300+) to replace it."

"A piece of plastic came out of the dashboard. I found it lying on the console. I think it may be the reason one of the vents doesnt open properly. I reported this when I took the vehicle in for maintenance at the dealership but the problem was not solved."

Anonymous A., VA (2019 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The bottum cushion bolster on the drivers side, specifically the bolster facing the door; the fabric is splitting. I though I caused this damager, but upon one research via forums, many people are reporting this on the forester sport model only."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Rust

"On the driver's side of the car the rocker panel under the front door had a line of rust about 15 inches long. This spot was not exposed to the outside. Subaru refused to repair it. I took it to a body shop for repair. They told me the rust was probably caused by the step protector rubbing against the panel and wearing the paint off"

"This was a used car purchased at a dealer. When driving home, I noticed a grinding noise when making a turn. I returned it to the dealer who said they had inspected it and found nothing. I took it to my local mechanic shop who found the problem and fixed it. I communicated with the dealer who at first refused to pay for the repair. I had to go to the general manager and the repair manager thru emails to get them to acknowledge they missed this problem when they inspected the car. They finally reimbursed the repair."
