After about an hour the motor worked normally but the valve was still stuck and check engine light was on. We were able to drive the vehicle over the weekend and drove about 300 miles to our dealer in Alabama. The replacement was covered by a warranty extension issued May 1, 2024. I immediately called the Subaru dealer where we bought the vehicle and was told it was probably a computer problem that was not a safety hazard (eg., the vehicle should work just fine). I took it in for servicing upon return home and they apparently fixed the problem. So I thought. It did the same thing a few months later on another trip to the coast."

Auto start/stop still sounds like it's straining when the engine is hot. Now that I'm retired, I don't spend so much time crawling in traffic, so I simply turn of auto start/stop.""

Anonymous A., WA (2020 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Battery completely died. It was replaced at my cost but died again. Subaru looked at it under warranty and found that a light was on draining the battery. It has been OK now."

Anonymous A., MA (2020 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is an issue with the battery charging system, that impacts with the auto stop-start. After you have been driving about 30 minutes the car sounds like it will hardly start, and on a few occasions it hasn't. It needs a jump to start. It's a known problem which Subaru refuses to fix for me. Even though the car is still under warranty they want to charge me about $300 for a replacement battery and tray that may not actually fix the problem. Horrible customer service"

Anonymous, NJ (2020 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had problem with car shutting off. Took a to the dealership and found out there was an issue with the battery. Subaru covered 80% of the cost. Was not too happy as it was an issue of battery size."

"The keyless entry system randomly didn't work to open the door. Even after getting a new battery in the dongle."

Anonymous, (2020 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car has an electronic rear tailgate. It often will not open or close as it should. Dealer provided a work around when it doesn't open. Closing must be done manually. Most problematic, if the keyless fob is pressed on in your pocket the tailgate will open while you are driving"

Anonymous, NJ (2020 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other electrical system problem

"Rear left window button broke. The replacement Subaru has installed also broke."

Anonymous, MD (2020 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""When opening the trunk, it automatically opens, then beeps, and then closes on my head automatically. I am usually able to get out of the way, but one time it was quick and hit me with enough force to knock me to the ground (leaving me with a nasty headache and dizziness), and several other times bumped me hard enough to leave a small bruise. I took it to Subaru three times to have it fixed, and they were unable to correct the problem, even after replacing the struts (which they billed me for). They finally tried limiting the door so that it doesnt open all the way (stops about 2 short) and this stopped it from auto-closing. Now I just have to duck under the door or manually finish the open every time I open it.""

Anonymous A., VA (2020 Subaru Forester Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Fuel injection system

"Car randomly stopped while driving bc of fuel injection and dealership replaced"

Anonymous, DE (2020 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Not sure I can state this correctly: Had to have Throttle Body cleaned. Service still suggested that I have intake manifold & interior engine cleaned (about $1200). Apparently direct injection system is more prone to carbon build-up in the intake manifold and throttle as fuel doesn't run through this area. So simply using a fuel injection cleaner would not work. This is not covered through my extended warranty as it is considered regular maintenance vs. a breakdown of the system. I've never had to have this service on any other vehicle I owned."

"While on a brief trip, the "check engine" light came on and various systems (I-Sight, etc.) ceased working. I took the car to my dealer who immediately diagnosed the problem which was under warranty. They repaired the car and I was on my way."

Anonymous, NC (2020 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had no previous symptoms, was driving along an interstate Highway at 65 mph, dashboard lit up with several codes etc.. lost all power could barely get off highway as very slim area between right lane and mountainsroad was curvy and had just gone under an overpass.. tractor trailer behind us barely just missed hitting us at full speed as the design of road created a blind spot.. we had no safe area to wait for roadside assistance other than an emergency U-turn area between the highway .. waited 5 hours in terrible heat with high speed traffic on both sides of us Subaru Starlink subscription could not get us towed AAA tow trucks were all not available .. it was a harrowing almost deadly experience.. Subaru had made a serious error in only sending us a notice not a recall as we had NO previous symptoms.. they replaced the TCV VALVE but showed no concern for the millions of others who could possibly not be as lucky as us .. also their Safe/ family Car marketing campaigns does not align with what happened.. every Subaru Forester in the year ranges they notified us of should have the TCV valves replaced symptoms or not!!!!"

""About 10 months after purchasing this used 2020 Forester I was doing a routine check of fluid levels when I noticed that the coolant overflow reservoir looked dark. Upon opening the lid I was shocked to find a thick, oily, olive-green, slurry-like substance the consistency of very thick paint! I opened the radiator & found some of the same substance floating just inside the cap. I then recalled the fact that once the heavy deodorizer, (obviously applied by the pre-sale detailer) had disbursed, the driver's side carpeting had an "oily" scent & feel that multiple shampooings failed to remove. Since the Subaru Dealer where I purchased the car was the only place it had been serviced, I returned & showed the Sales Manager. He had the Service Manager take it right in after which I was told that oil & antifreeze had become mixed in the cooling system & I should not drive it except to return home. He would consult with his Subaru America Service Rep to see if there was anything they could do, since the vehicle was out of warrantee. Late the following day the Service Manager called to say that Subaru America offered to pay $13,000 of the $15,000 to fully rebuild the engine and warrantee the job for 1-year if I agreed to co-pay $2,000. The dealer also agreed to replace the carpeting and provide a loaner car while the work was being completed, which took a couple of weeks. Considering that my only choices were to accept this offer or to (unethically) sell/trade to another unsuspecting party, I chose to invest the additional $2-k. Though certainly not pleased with the ordeal or having to invest another $2-k in a vehicle I had owned for less than a year, the willingness of Subaru America to provide the Dealer a path to resolving the issue on a vehicle that was long out-of-warrantee does inject a positive note.""

""One morning I turned on my Subaru to discover that ALL of the warning lights on the car turned on and didnt turn off. After checking the gas cap, which, when loose, will cause similar catastrophic failure (why? Who knows), I took it to my local service shop which ran diagnostics and discovered that the Thermo Control Valve had failed, that this was a known issue with this model of Subaru, and that Subaru would replace it for free. I then took the car to a Subaru dealership and showed them the diagnostics printout and Subaru policy stating that it should be replaced for free. The dealership then insisted on running diagnostics again, which they charged me NINETY DOLLARS for, received identical output, and fixed the problem for free, while still charging me for the superfluous diagnostics. The problem was fixed, but resulted in me losing use of my car for a week and cost me $90 and six hours of driving to get fixed.""

First encountered the problem shortly after the 60-day Dealer used-car warrantee expired & still continues intermittently, 2-years later. What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

""The car was at the dealer for the coolant control valve replacement. The dealership noted that the rear brake pads were down to the wear limit (car mileage 60000). This is very unusual, maybe related to the electric park brake and automatic release system. I had the brake pads replaced by the dealership. I know they worked on the brakes because the rear brakes had air in them when I picked up the car. I examined the bleeder fittings when I got home, and they were completely dry, so the technician hadn't bled the brakes when they put the new lining on. I went ahead and bled the brakes and things seem to be working okay now.""
