"It might have been due to us not staying on top of the oil level, but a piston rod broke and punctured the engine block while driving at highway speed. The engine was ruined and had to be replaced."
Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)""Head gasket leaked for years, mechanic said it was endemic to this engine. Catalytic converter has needed replacement for 2 years. Radiator failed, brakes and tires needed replacement, and engine was sluggish on acceleration. I couldn't afford another (used) car/car, loan/higher insurance premiums, etc. so waited as long as possible to save $, then had the engine pulled, got new head gasket, machined the block/cylinders (I think) all new water pump, hoses, belts, seals and new brakes and tires. It runs really well but now is leaking oil again. Am taking it back to the Subaru specialist who did those repairs, as it should still be under warranty. I really like this make and model and won't buy a newer Outback than 2009 - they're like an SUV: too big and bulky.""
