    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Exhaust leaks

"exhaust pipe rusted thru at muffler. required replacement of both pipe and muffler."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer told me I needed a $7000+ repair to cat converter. Exhaust place found numerous leaks & damage to system, but not cat converter. Had been to two diff dealers not long before, they said exhaust system was fine. Meantime heat shield pieces loose, and dealer telling me they arent necessary. Exhaust place repaired for $1500 but still smell exhaust. None of the mechanics in this area seem to be reliable anymore."

    Anonymous A., OH (2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
    Loose/rattling heat shield

"I've had the heat shields tightened on multiple occasions and have fixed some myself to reduce the rattling. More annoying than dangerous."

    Anonymous A., GA (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlights on the Outback burn out frequently, whether replaced by the dealer or by another shop. Since replacement requires removing a front tire, it is labor-intensive and not very very users friendly for replacement."

Anonymous, MO (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"first of all-the headlights on Subaru Outback's are located in a very inconvenient area-so much inconvenient-that the car has the reputation amongst mechanics as a pain in the neck for performing a normally very routine maintenance task. My Outback has had problems with the headlights for several years. I have had to replace the bulbs more times that I can count. And two different mechancis have told me that the entire elctrical wiring sytstem that controls the headlights would or should be replaced. Otherwise- my headlights will always appear dull, underpowered, and will not always be equally bright. What a pain."

    Anonymous A., MA (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other electrical system problem

"Driver side window stops working intermittently. Changing the window switch assembly in the driver's side door did not fix the problem. Steering wheel volume control has stopped working multiple times throughout my years of ownership and has been replaced twice."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
    Tire pressure monitor

Anonymous, OR (2011 Subaru Outback Unsure Unsure)

"At the beginning of acceleration there is an rpm that causes a loud rattle under the hood. If I accelerate quickly it is very short but when I speed up smoothly there is a loud rattle that continues until the car gets faster."

Anonymous, TN (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Knocking or rattling under the chassis, to some extent related to loose undercarriage hardware"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a rattle under the car when i start it and back out. It goes away when the engine is warm. The shocks and do make noise and the ride is bouncy."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I thought the car needed new struts this year because it seemed to be riding rougher. I had the front ones replaced and now the car has a squeek or grone over large bumps when I go slowly and turn sharply to the right. I have such a situation when I turn into work. I took it back to them and they could find no problems. I believe it is something they did but the grone sounds like it is under the passenger side front seat and not where the strut is. As I am describing this it seems like I better take it back to the mechanic. It did not make the noise before the struts were replaced."

Anonymous, TN (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

Anonymous, GA (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Other major transmission & clutch problem

"The Subaru outback 3.6 R has problems with the engine burning oil. I bought the car and it only had 30,000 miles but I immediately had to begin adding oil to it. After about 3 to 5 years, I was driving down the road and I felt like someone had rear-ended me. All the lights in the dash came on. The dealer told me that I needed a new transmission. The car had less than 100,000 miles on it. After trying various things, I figured out that if I use premium gas, premium fluids like Amsoil, and I do not let the oil get low at all, I dont seem to have the problem. If the oil gets down even a quarter of a quart the bang will return."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

""Had parked vehicle for 15 min and when I started the car it began jerking. Tried turning on and off. Drove some and vehicle continued jerking and all lights came one dashboard. Car manual suggested car could still be driven. Was traveling and luckily found dealership within 20 miles. They ran diagnostics and all codes related to transmission valve body. They were able to get parts and complete repair in about 25 hours. Friendship Subaru, Beckley, WV.""

    Anonymous, SC (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"All the dashboard warning lights came on while I was driving and the cruise control stopped operating. It was diagnosed as a failure of (I think) the main valve body or valve computer at the front end of the transmission. The part had to be replaced. The car stayed at the mechanic for more than 3 weeks while they waited for the part and then installed it."

    Anonymous A., AZ (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Torque converter

    "torque converter shudder"

    Anonymous, CO (2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Car overheated due to radiator needing replacement."

    Anonymous, OR (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

    Anonymous, QC (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This issue began October 2023. I had it towed to Subaru-Concord for repair. The head gasket blew and needed to be repaired/replaced. January 2024, I had issues with performance, lack of acceleration; was told by a mechanic friend to take it back to Subaru Concord to be repaired(#2). Then February 2024; had additional issues with performance-engine wise. Had it repaired, locally to where I was. Mechanic is friends w/a very close friend. November 2024, returning from a trip, the radiator fan broke. I sat on the side of the road for 6+ hours before AAA could tow me home. The next day, I had it towed to my mechanic team, who replaced the radiator fan. I continued to have overheating issues. Returning to my mechanic team, who recommended taking it back to Subaru-Concord for repairs, since they performed the FIRST repair in 2023. I returned to Subaru Concord for repairs. With each repair visit, I was given a loaner. I asked for the technician to email me EXACTLY what work he performed. I haven't heard him. The LAST time (March 2025)I picked up my 'repaired' Outback, I was informed for a more intensive examination was going to cost me an ADDITIONAL $1600. I, also, asked "Why does it overheat?" Their reply: "The heads are warped". Then I asked "Why are the heads warped?" Their reply: "It overheats." THAT'S A NON-ANSWER!!!! When I picked my 2011 Subaru Outback,THE LAST TIME from Subaru Concord, I queried the Service Writer what to do with the overheating issue, she said: KEEP A JUG OF WATER w/you. My OUTBACK OVERHEATED 2 IN LESS THAN 8 MILES from Subaru Concord to my home. I'm not finished resolving my issue with Subaru Concord. I DID RESOLVE MY TRANSPORTATION ISSUE. I bought my BRAND 'CUSTOM' NEW 2025 SUBARU OUTBACK in June, this year, from CAPITAL SUBARU-GREENVILLE (NC). That decision was made AFTER I spoke with a Sales agent AND the Sales Manager w/Subaru Concord. When I explained my overheating /warped heads issue and response from Service Dept with the Sales Manager, his reply was: "They're service, we're sales." My questioned him: "you don't talk to/with one another about YOUR products, good, bad, or indifferent?" His answer "Well, no." I was SO HAPPY with my 2011 Subaru Outback, which I purchased in May 2020. I have replaced the brake and suspension systems,no issues. Then the head gasket and I've had issues with its performance ever since. I, also, know dealerships want to double repair work, by NOT repairing CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME. Our motor vehicle is our SECOND most expensive item we purchase in our lives; the first being our home."

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
    Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester, 2003-2006 Baja, 2004-2011 Impreza, 2004-2014 WRX (including STI), 2003-2014 Legacy and Outback, and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2X vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming or "Zone C." These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
    What should you do:
Subaru will notify their owners. General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began January 7, 2020.
