    Anonymous A., CA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch fork broke. Took one day to be fixed and I was back on the road."

    Anonymous, AZ (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Other major transmission & clutch problem

"CVT many times has reported errors in the computer, and causes the dashboard warning lights to all flash. Been brought in to the subaru dealer multiple times for clearing, but no definitive fix has ever been made"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After I poured thousands into repairs, the car developed a bad transmission shutter. I was advised not to do a transmission flush as it could make things worse. Its a ticking time bomb before it goes out."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"In the summer of 2023, with perhaps 85,000 miles, the transmission on my 2013 outback went completely out. I took it to an AAMCO for repair, and the total cost was over $10,000. Early in 2024, I had another small transmission issue, but since it was less than 12 months from the previous work, AAMCO only charged a few hundred dollars. I have also had a few other unexpected repairs, including a catalytic converter for over $2000. Finally, there is a fluid leak somewhere in the system that no one can fix without doing a full rebuild. Since I have had so much work done on this vehicle, especially the transmission replacement, I am trying to drive it for as long as I can, but in all likelihood, I will never purchase another Subaru again."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car started making a tapping noise so I took it to the dealer to check it out. They said the transmission was failing and could stop catastrophically at any time. The warranty had been extended, but the vehicle was just beyond the extended time and mileage. The dealer recommended I call Subaru of America to plead my case and they ended up paying 1/2 the cost, which saved me over $4000. I believe this was partly because I had all the service work done at the dealer, and I had not skipped any services."

    Anonymous A., CA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Oil leaks

"oil loss has been chronic problem since about 45,000 miles. went thru the Subaru oil consumption recall without any actual correction (sensor replaced). I add 1 qt of full synthetic (expensive) 0-20 oil every 1,000 miles. It's like a "rolling oil change" Since 175000 miles on the car I've noticed slight oil loss on pavement, so have determined that there's now a head gasket leak too."

Anonymous, IA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had slow oil leak I think in camshaft cover. Because of opposing cylinder design, cost $2000 just for new seals. Now it appears that either the leak is continuing ir there's a new one."

Anonymous, OR (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It always leaked oil even new. It probably needed an extra quart every 6,000 miles as its getting older closer to 2 quarts every 6,000 miles"

    Anonymous A., LA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Uses oil between oil changes of 1 to 2 quarts. Has been this way for years."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other minor engine problem

"Oil consumption without visible leaks. We carry a quart of oil in the car because we do not know when the low oil light comes on."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Bought at 65,000 miles. Immediately noticed the engine needs a quart of oil every two weeks. My local mechanic found that there is a known issue with Subaru engines across many years and many models. Instead of doing a recall, they did a warranty extension. Im disappointed that they were able to hide this issue from the CarFax info. I called Subaru of America. They avoided me a lot. Finally they told me to take it to a Subaru dealership to verify it had excessive oil consumption. Cost $250 and they verified the problem and told me the engine needs a $5000 rebuild. After calling Subaru of America a bunch more they eventually told me that because its gone beyond the 10 year warranty, they would not help me with the cost. Im extremely disappointed and will never buy a Subaru again."

    Anonymous A., MD (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine has to be completely removed for head gasket replacement, so just as cheap to get a rebuild $5k!"

Anonymous, OR (2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Faulty engine caused excessive oil consumption. About 1 1/2 quarts added between oil changes since we bought it 6 years ago. Did not make the recall Serial number needed. This caused the catalytic converter failure. Then the head gasket blew. Got that fixed then the engine seized up and had a short block replaced. Then the valve body failed."

    Anonymous A., SC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Head gasket

"The head gasket blew around 193,000 miles."

    Anonymous A., SC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other major engine problem

"The cam carrier had to be replaced. This was diagnosed during a routine oil change. There were no obvious signs of a problem. But apparently this is a common issue with Subaru engines. The shop said it wasn't urgent. We waited about a month, got some second opinions and comparison quotes. Total cost was about $3000. We decided that spending the money would allow us to continue to drive the car for at least several more years. The dealer provided a loaner vehicle for the week it took to do the replacement."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

    What Owners Say

    CV joint

"Front CV joints have been replaced previously. This would appear to be an ongoing issue with this vehicle."

Anonymous, MN (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Differential

"Rear end of vehicle started to clunk badly and was leaking fluids, so got it in the shop quickly."

Anonymous, SD (2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
    Other driveline problem

"There was noise coming from the right rear wheel reported when passengers rode in the rear seat. I had the tires checked and it was not a tire problem. The noise was worse at higher speeds but did not influence maneuverability. When we took it to our mechanic, he said that the hub was close to falling off. He said that both hubs should be replaced. I didn't have an opportunity to reply to other. The headlights are difficult to access and you need to take the car in to a mechanic to replace them and the labor is expensive. Also the left driver window stopped working and had to be repaired. The check engine light came on several time indicating low oil when the oil level wasn''t very low."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The horn quit working. I had it replaced."

    Anonymous A., CO (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Error code in transmission system, repaired with a new solenoid"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Microphone for blue tooth causes constant buzz for other party, making it unusable."
