Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Engine mounts

""Engine would run rough, especially when idling at stoplight or similar situation. Took it to shop, they said all 3 engine mounts broken; they replaced ; cost $1,300""

    Anonymous A., SC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Oil leaks

"The outback has been using more oil from the beginning. At the last inspection I was told it is a major leak. We are still trying to find out where."

Anonymous, KS (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very expensive to find leak- engine had to be pulled completely out."

    Anonymous, (2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Oil leak invoves pulling engine est $3500 from dealer"

Anonymous, ID (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""A couple of years ago I had an oil leak that I don't remember the exact gasket, but they told me the engine would have to be removed from the car to fix and it would be $4000-5000 to fix. More than the car is currently worth. Then, recently, I had it for routine service and a little 'knocking'--they reported that there was oil in the spark plug space and another major repair to correct that. I keep hearing that there are known Subaru oil issues--and if this is true and known, why doesn't Subaru help us loyal customers with more reasonable cost for these known issues???""

Anonymous, OR (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Within a month, rear camera had to be replaced. Within 6 months had major issue with the transmission and part of it had to be replaced. Within a year discovered I had a crack in my cam ? Its never been fixed and loses oil quickly. After a year my electric windows worked some of the time - did not fix, now still have problems with drivers side window and the driver side can not be used to lower the passenger window. Recently the back door hatch hydraulic lift has completely stopped working. A side panel came off - dont know how or where- possibly during automatic car wash.""

    Anonymous A., WV (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "Valve cover has small leak."

Anonymous, MN (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car has consistently burned on quart of oil between oil changes; since about 75,000 miles, it consumes two quarts of oil between oil changes."

    Anonymous, ID (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other minor engine problem

""The car has burned through engine oil for years. Starting year 5+ the oil light would come on to signal low oil and I would just need to add an extra quart (or more) about 2 weeks - a month before I would otherwise be scheduled for my oil change. No leak underneath, the oil is just gone. I've had dealers look at it, as well as other mechanics and no one has been able to point to a root cause of the problem or a fix.""

    Anonymous A., VA (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""There are multiple areas on the body (especially near trim or bends in the car metal) where the paint is beginning to peel. I did not expect this from a car that is routinely cited for going more than 200,000 miles.""

Anonymous, OR (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Headlights

"We lost low beam on one side, ight beam on the other, requires removal of grill and fenders to replace headlights. Hundreds of dollars in labor because Subaru never considered having to replace bulbs."

    Anonymous, TX (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"I was having to replace headlight bulbs (low beam) every 12-14 months so I finally switched all vehicle bulbs to after market LED's and have not had a problem since."

    Warning lights

""My 2013 Subaru Outback with a 2.5L engine experienced several issues that I believed may be related to a network communication problem. Here are the key points: 1. Stored diagnostic code: U0073 (Control Module Communication Bus "A" Off) 2. Intermittent oil pressure light: Typically comes on a few miles into driving but clears upon restart. 3. Inconsistent sensor readings observed through OBD2 scanning: a. Significant difference in Throttle Position Sensor readings (16 points on average) b. Unusual O2 sensor voltage readings (oscillating value regularly exceeds 2-3v) c. No noticeable drivability issues Diagnosis, oil level sensor replacement, and software update resolved the issue. It took a couple months, visits to multiple shops, and the purchase of an obd2 scanner to resolve the issue.""

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

""Catalytic converter has been problematic for last couple years, causing the car to stall out in cold weather and having issues starting. It will invariably throw unrelated engine codes. Mechanic says it's going but not gone yet and is still able to be used as is recognizing we understand the issue.""

Anonymous, MN (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""As brand new, this car needed 1Qt of oil make up at about 3000mi: It could not span the recommended 3750mi oil change interval without adding oil. This excessive new engine oil consumption got a lot worse in 2020 at about 110k mi (about 1Qt of oil needed every 800mi) and started to severely contaminate and prematurely plug up both front and back CAT converters within 6 to 12mo. They were replaced under the car PZEV warranty (15yrs / 150k) four times since. If I had known better, I should have invoked NYS lemon law within the first 2 years of ownership and get rid of this lemon. I found out after the fact that both outback 2013 and 2014 vintage had a known shortblock cylinder bore design clearance issue responsible for the excessive oil consumption. Subaru of America inc. "lost" and settled a class action lawsuit with favorable terms to them that makes their customers go through so many hoops and expenses (Subaru oil consumption test that requires every little oil leaks to be fixed e.g head gasket, valve cover gasket...etc) to justify the short block replacement under warranty that by the time Subaru agrees to replace the short block the customer pretty much paid out of pocket between $2000 to $4000 indirectly. I opted to pay for the extra oil being burned and pushed Subaru to replace the CAT 4 times as a consequence.""

    Anonymous, NY (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "problem effected the cruise control"

    Anonymous, (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Other/unsure

    "Oil consumption"

Anonymous, SC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Started using oil such that more had to be added between oil changes. Think it started about 6 years in. Still does; I carry oil in the car, just in case Also the lift gate leaked around the upper brake light. May have done it since I bought it. Was fixed once under warranty, but is either still doing it or doing it again.""

    Other major engine problem

Also, about 4 years ago the oil level lamp (yellow not the red one) started coming on within a few minutes of starting the car, whatever the oil level might be, so I have to check the oil level manually with the dipstick, every one to two weeks. .""

    What Owners Say

Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"Had to replace shifter plate which was keeping key from being removable from ignition. Subaru found another issue with the transmission valve body caused by another Subaru dealer overtightening bolts and damaging the body. They did not offer to cover the repair as they said it had been over a year since the service work."

    Anonymous, NM (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
    Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part.
