The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Subaru Outback owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Backup or other camera/sensors

"Vehicle was purchased new and we have had ongoing problems with the back up camera since purchase. Computer was replaced at one point, but problem recurred. Unhooking battery, which seems to reboot the computers seems to help temporarily."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    CD player

"CD was stuck in player for years rendering it unusable. FInly came out recently"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen freezes up

"At some point last year, 2023, the touch screen of the Outback's infotainment system would sometimes not register our touch, and sometimes the screen would start registering touches without us having touched the screen, i.e. you'd hear the beep indicating a touch and the infotainment system would start going to the menu / item that the "phantom touch" pointed at. I asked the dealer about this problem and the service advisor said it's a known issue, but the only fix is to replace the entire head unit, which they told me would be over $1,000."

    Anonymous A., CA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Ongoing. Started in January. Have not looked into repair because it is intermittemt"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Touchscreen and steering column controls become unresponsive"

    Anonymous A., NC (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"The central dash display screen, has gone mostly but not always blank, and I have been quoted a cost to repair of about $1000. This screen provides the odometer values, including total and trip, plus selectable digital speedometer, nav system turn directions, mileage and other info. I really dislike poorly-made automotive electronic units, especially if they are expensive or difficult to repair."

    Anonymous A., WA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The entertainment screen stopped operating completely. I replaced it with an afternmarket system as it was cheaper than replacing with a factory model and newer technology."

    Anonymous, RI (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"When my iPhone is paired with car Bluetooth, I am unable to get Apple Music to stop playing"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Hardware replacement

"The touch screen delaminated and cause the unit to behave erratically. I replace the entire unit."

Anonymous, DE (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Although replacement of the screen/radio unit was under used car warranty the problem wasnt fixed and I was informed that it is inherent. When the sun shines in across the screen it is un-viewable. Very disappointing and unacceptable. Just have to live with it."

    Anonymous A., WI (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Auto scan feature quit working; display head unit replaced"

    Anonymous A., MN (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"System is out of date. Upgrade must be paid for. Subaru wants $450 for a three-state update. I use my cell phone for GPS."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation system and infotainment went insane 4 years ago, at about 20 k miles. Unresponsive, frozen screens, random scrolling, constant beeping and absurd instructions, etc. Have paid dealer twice to correct the condition without remedy. Only recourse is to force quit the entire system every time the car is started."

    Anonymous A., SC (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I don't use the cars system, I ether read a map or use my phone."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The builtin gps/radio died and had to replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It stopped working many years ago and software updates never fixed it. The map works as to where you are.. but the routes never happen...the mapping never shows the car on the route. Sometimes there is a straight line where it should be following the road on the map. So since then it has been basically useless."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This requires a trip to the dealer to have the chip updated. Not sure of the cost."

    Anonymous, (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"In 2020 the touch screen started having issues. The far right side would no longer take input. This issue progressively moved left across the screen to the point were no part of the screen will take input. Several of the functions of the screen are not replicated with other inputs like buttons or knobs. Because of the repair pricing and age of the vehicle, I have chosen to live with it."

    Anonymous A., FL (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Infotainment touch screen no longer responds to touch. You can control the audio via steering wheel controls. However, GPS is no longer available because you can't enter an address."

    Anonymous A., CA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
    Over-the-air software update failed

"Unable to use any wireless services, other than Bluetooth for phone"

    Anonymous A., (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone does not reliably connect with in car system. When cable connection is used any change in volume and sometimes just bumps in the road result in car switching audio source off or switching phone to a different audio source. Bluetooth connection is out of control, sometimes it works, other times it does not work or makes the audio source pause or stop. Sometimes it can be controlled from dashboard screen. Other times it requires alignment of app, phone and car audio system all paused or stopped. Then car audio can often start it. But sometimes I must start on phone. Sometimes car refuses to take phone audio but has locked on the Bluetooth so I cannot use wireless earbuds This has been present since the purchase of the car. Sometimes radio freezes or reverts to startup screen and freezes there. Finally, when radio is on and I reverse to backup (i.E. out of a parking spot) all controls become inoperative while the camera is on. This means that we cannot turn down distracting audio while backing up without stopping to take the car out of reverse, turning the sound down and putting it back in reverse to restart backup move. This is dangerous. The only solution I have found is to pop a CD into the player. Then the car radio plays the CD but with no controls except the eject button Lowich I can use to stop audio."

    Anonymous A., NJ (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Radio

"Radio would start scanning for all available stations. Would not respond to input commands."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The radio stops working and we are unable to connect to a station."

Anonymous, VT (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, FL (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous, AZ (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced left rear wheel bearing at dealership. It was making noise. It was fixed by replacing assembly. It cost about $1000. Because of the mileage and type of driving I do, I think it was a premature failure. The cost was also higher than expected."

Anonymous, MN (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Engine knock or ping

"The oil inexplicably is depleted which means it's burning up. This indicates pretty major wear of the pistons which should not be happening at 110k miles. Because I'd had an oil change not long ago, I had not been checking oil levels, so I've likely been running on low oil for a while. The low oil was only discovered when I had it looked at for the transmission problem, so it's hard to say how long it's been this way. Very frustrating to have this car have this caliber of breakdown at such a young age. My previous Outback (1995) ran for 287k miles before selling it and it was still running fairly well at that time."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous A., MA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Batteries kept going bad, even after adding maintainer. Subaru denied problem. Found out there was a class action suit that I was not apprised of. Too late for effective recourse. Subaru USA gave me $250 to have dealer update/revise the computer."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Drain on battery since it was new. Subaru changed entire wiring in vehicle. It helped but never stopped the drain. After checking and checking, Subaru supplied mean 800 amp battery. It is probably still draining but this battery never goes dead."

Anonymous, NC (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, UT (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other electrical system problem

"The electronic air vent was stuck in the open position."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"#1 The horn stopped working. The problem was a connector in the steering wheel that was located behind the air bag. It cost nearly $500 CDN to have it repaired (parts and labour) #2 The power lift gate sometimes does not close completely until the button is pushed a second time. This was happening very often until recently -- now it only happens occasionally."

    What Owners Say

    CV joint

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Took to dealer in July 2023 and told them about noise when making sharp turns. They replaced right CV joint, said that was the only problem. Noise continued, went back in April 2024 and they admitted left CV joint was bad. Wanted almost twice as much to replace it as the other one. I took it to an independent mechanic who did it for less than half the price."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Both CV axels needed replacing within a 3 month period. This required two different visits to the garage with a the car unavailable for 2 days the first time and 1 day on the second."

    Anonymous A., FL (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This vehicle had clicking and popping sounds in tighter turns. The dealership found one of the front CV boots had cracked and the CV joint was failing due to exposure. A Subaru dealership did the change for me. The popping and snapping sounds are no longer present in the car when I drive it."

    Anonymous A., WA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Driveshaft or axle

"RT Frt axle started making noise and clunking. We had it replaced under an extended warranty purchased"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission valve body three code to be replaced but the dealer was unable to guarantee that replacing would fix the issue and not require rebuilt transmission. Cost prohibitive to repair so purchased new vehicle"

Anonymous, OH (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CTV transmission went, I wrote president of Subaru Canada asking for help, no reply,,I had to buy 3 reused transmission until one worked, that last two were on installers warranty"

    Anonymous A., ON (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Began hearing transmission noise at about 105k miles; we've just learned that it is a complete breakdown of the CVT. It has not been repaired and it is still driveable but will fail completely soon. Mechanic indicates it was likely due to our pulling a pop-up trailer for occasional mountain trips (2-3 times annually over 7 years); trailer is only 1400 lbs while the towing capacity is supposedly 2700 lbs, but mechanic believes towing is bad for CVTs altogether and would not recommend doing so regardless of the Outback's purported towing capabilities. Repairs would cost $6,000 just to replace it with another used transmission. Meanwhile, the engine is burning all its oil so an engine replacement is also likely needed soon. Together these will cost $12-15k. So we will likely have to replace the car entirely rather than repair them all."
