Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Have had to replace 3 times over life of car"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Exhaust leaks

"The exhaust is leaking around the catalytic converter, but fixing it would mean replacing the converter so we have not fixed it since it is a minor leak."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Muffler

"The baffles inside the muffler came loose and could have ruined the engine but I got a new system put on from manifold back. A protective plate on the system could not be easily replaced so we left it off. Even so, the system has had leaks and is more noisy than the factory one was."

    Other/unsure

"Battery again dead. Dead batteries have been an ongoing problem with my 2016 Outback. I have had to have the battery jumped 2 times and have also had to buy 2 new batteries .... all at my own expense, because Subaru had a design flaw that allowed a continuous battery "drain", and the corporation refused to acknowledge and recall the problem. Lots of angry customers on line! I had to eventually solve this battery drain problem myself, by purchasing and installing a special sensor. This SHOULD have been recalled, repaired, and paid for by the Subaru Corporation !"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Have had continued problem w/ the battery discharging when car not driven frequently, esp. in winter. Battery keeps draining--we have replaced it on our own 2 times now. Subaru and other garages can't find a problem."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

It developed again in December 2023 after the car sat for 2 weeks. In March 2024 the dealer tracked it to a defective Starlink unit that was replaced. Subaru customer care paid for the repair."

    Anonymous A., ON (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Moon roof leaked. So much so that the front and back seat floor was full of water. I would park on an incline, with the rear of the car lower than the front, during rain so I didn't get water in the floor boards. I searched youtube to find a fix. I cleaned the drains. That didn't fix the problem. Then found a youtuber that suggested that the moon roof had loose mounting bracket screws when it was installed at the factory. Causing the roof to drop down and causing the roof to not seal tightly. I tried his recommendation to fix the leak. IT WORKED. It took me only 10 min. to fix. The roof leaked from about 2019 to 2022."

    Anonymous A., MD (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous A., NY (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"During maintenance check, battery failed. This is the 3rd battery I have had for this car - previous 2 have failed. After further testing this was related to the starlink program looking for a signal and slowly draining the battery. Starlink issue fixed and new battery installed per a Subaru bulletin."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is some 12-volt drain that continually kills batteries. I'm on my 4th. The dealer flashed the computer to make it charge higher and it's still marginal."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had to replace the battery 4 times in the 7 years I've owned it, which seemed excessive to me. This spring my Subaru dealer told me this was a common problem and the factory installed battery system was undereqipped for my vehicle and an upgraded system was recommended."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The rats had eaten several wires so many electrical functions within the car were not working. It was not covered by the warranty"

    Anonymous A., NY (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Started about two years agoId get in to start and the battery would be dead. Subaru finally admits this is a problem with this and other year outbacks. I carry a jump pack so I can jump start the car when it wont start. Thus my confidence in Subaru is gone. Our previous Subaru had a problem with the head gasket and they knew it but took no steps to correct it for those cars they sold. I actually love my car but I no longer trust the Subaru company."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"started three years ago. Battery drained overnight eventually destroyed battery. Happened again and found (via internet ) it is a common problem. Too expensive to renew Starlink, (over $2000). Suggested on internet that removing a fuse saves repeated need for new batteries. Did that- it works but cannot now use hands free phone."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"After a seven year history (from new) of three battery replacements the dealership finally discovered that the DCM was draining the battery and replaced it under my extended warranty. Note: a year later (now) this appears to be a recall issue - apparently the DCM is constantly searching for the 3G network that is no longer available - and draining the battery in doing so. I'm guessing the dealership was already aware of this upcoming recall when they did my repair a year ago."

    Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Other steering/suspension problem

"This model has a serpentine belt that I believe is part of its power steering, but I am not entirely sure. Apparently, Subaru knew there were issues with it, and subsequent model years no longer have the design that was used in the 2016 model. The local dealership has only a couple of mechanics who know how to repair or replace this belt when it is in need of repair/replacement. It makes a squealing noise at times when turning. This has been going on for over a year now. It was better for a while after it was replaced, but some of the noise is returning in under a year. We had been planning on handing this car to our son when he gets his license, but this belt issue is enough of a concern and can not be easily fixed/replaced if it were to act up while driving, so we will likely replace this car."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Subaru was gracious with partial ($1000) financial support for the first replacement and full financial support ($3000) on the most recent replacement."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I noticed my oil consumption increased around 90,000 km. I did testing every 5000 km and they said it wasnt leaking or seemingly low but I was definitely having to add oil. Now at 160,000 km they say they see oil sweating (aka leaking) hence the high oik consumption. I no longer have warranty so am troubled that this wasn't addressed before"

Anonymous A., AB (2016 Subaru Outback)

    Anonymous A., GA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission (cvt) made horrible loud noise. And before that it was very slow. Subaru did replace it for free, but it took almost a week. Very disappointing since I dont drive the vehicle as much and I drive like a grandma."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Trasmission started slipping and Subaru replaced it free of charge even if it was out of warranty"

    Anonymous A., QC (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Transmission was replaced by the Subaru dealer for the fourth time in the last 3-4 years. All were covered by warranty. The dealer now thinks that the vehicle's all-season tires, which have an unusual tread pattern, cause the vehicle to buck at very low speeds when the wheels are turned (e.g. turning around in a driveway), therefore putting strain on the transmission."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Gear selector or linkage

"The shifter plate went bad. This caused the safety sensors of the car to not always detect when it was in Park. This led to the occasional inability to start the car, use the seat memory, etc."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission leaks

"January 2023. Experienced it frequently. Kept seeing indications on the driveway. Oil leak on the CVC transmission case. Under warranty. Fixed in April 2023."

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous, NU (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Spark plugs or wires failure

"There was a misfire on two of the cylinders, front left and rear right, so I changed the plugs. While changing the plugs I found out all four cylinder head spark plug tube seals were leaking enough oil that the plug coil seal had rotted and caused the misfiring."

    Anonymous A., GA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Anonymous, WA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
