""One must power off the display screen while car is running. This can be done by pushing and holding the volume button, which forces the display screen/ radio to reboot. (I don't think most consumers are aware of this reset option.) It seems like the radio head units (which includes the display screens) are a known problem with this generation of Subarus""

"There is a well known failure of the display screen failing. Subaru has extended the warranty to cover replacement of the entire unit if necessary."

Anonymous, CO (2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Infotainment unit has the common de-lamination problem which has left the touch screen useless. The de-lamination (bubbling) started about 12 months ago but did not interfere with the system. About 9 month ago we started getting phantom touches. Phantom touches are where the screen will randomly act as though someone has touched it. This causes problems where the audio will change source, for example start scanning or changing radio stations. Or if a map/gps screen is up it will add a new destination due to a touch on the screen. It was not covered under warranty appox 6 mo ago when last at the dealer. In the past 3-6 months the unit has been unusable due to the frequency of the phantom touches. Subaru of America just notified us the warranty has been extended. Have not had a chance to have the dealer evaluate or replace it."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Bubbles formed under the touch screen which made it unusable. After Subaru said it wasn't under warranty and they wouldn't help with it, I replaced it with a Sony after market system. About 6 months after that, Subaru acknowledged there were problems with the unit, and they extended the warranty. However, since I no longer had the defective unit, they wouldn't do anything. No a good answer and they have likely lost me as a loyal Subaru owner."

    Anonymous A., PA (2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen froze up on a long trip while using navigation. took it to the dealer and the manufacturer replaced it outside of warranty."

"Touch screen became unresponsive to touches. Screen then delaminated. Dealer replaced entertainment unit. Unit didn't work. Still waiting for replacement after 6 months. Removing fuse for dcm deactivated several unit of unit."

Anonymous, NC (2019 Subaru Outback Unsure Unsure)

"Started on a trip out of state. Unable to use anything related to the main radio/ GPS unit. Was replaced underneath the extended warranty. It didn't end up costing me anything, but it would have been a couple of thousand."

Anonymous, WA (2019 Subaru Outback Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""experienced de-lamination and it looked like the factory stereo had water or oil between the display. Was unable to make input/output. Totally broken. Replaced with after market stereo. Subaru would not cover this even though it is a known problem on 2018 models. It wouldn't cover it as it was a 2019 model. class action law suit in the USA regarding this, but not in Canada.""

    Display screen goes blank

"At first the unit would randomly beep. This increased until the unit screen eventually went dark. The unit now beeps and flashes continuously. We have not taken it in to the dealer to have it replaced yet. Subaru has extended the warrant to cover replacement as this is a widespread problem with this year's make and model."

"The Display screen has never worked"

Anonymous, CO (2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""It started during/immediately after a standard mile based service.I noticed as I was driving away and went back to prove it to them. After they coordinated with the main company they replaced it for free. With the new unit it often has problems with talk to text link to Apple phone. Rather than initiate a text I now reply to an existing text from the person I want to text with. Otherwise it works fine. The replacement was 3 hour wait at dealer but now does Waze mapping just fine,""

"Vehicle had defective head unit, DCM and parasitic battery drain since purchase. This has resulted in multiple battery replacements, hours lost, time without a vehicle, and inconveniences. Some technicians indicate the replacement of these parts will resolve the issue. Others say it will not be resolved. Some anecdotes report this is an issue with the OnStar system continuously trying to connect to 3G satellites that are no longer functioning."

    Anonymous A., NC (2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After a couple of jumpstarts, the vehicle was brought to the Subaru dealership for to both identify and repair the issue. The 4G SOS and StarLink module located between the eyesight cameras, but on the roof was determined to be the cause of a slow 12V battery drain. This required a new 4G module, as well as a new 12V battery."

    Heads-up display

""The "infotainment" center is the source of many annoyances. Bought this 2019 car brand new and in 2022 the batteries started to die. They never lasted a year. Ends-up that the "DCM" (Data Control Module?) for StarLink kept trying to phone home over a 3G wireless connection. 3G technology was retired nationwide, so the DCM frantically kept searching for a signal even when the car was off. Hence the drained batteries. What a short-sighted, terrible, horrible, stupid design decision. In May 2025 Subaru replaced the entire Head (HUD?) unit and DCM. I asked if this now-4G system would drain my battery in the future. Subaru assured me that the new module would not call home. Android Auto has never worked properly since 2019. The Subaru service tech said something about Android Auto in the car not keeping-up with the changes to the AA on the phones. WTF? I keep the car's firmware up to date via Wi-Fi. So it shouldn't take a HUD replacement to update the embedded AA firmware. Another horrible design for which I hope an entire Subaru product management team got fired... instead of promoted for saving some money at the expense of customer satisfaction. Other problems with the infotainment unit included a spastic volume button that jumps too-high or too-low at a gentle touch. Inability to play MP3 files from an inserted thumb drive - and if it does play, loses connection, can't index the files, plays one track and not others, randomly freezes. I've yet to see if the new HUD fixes these issues. While griping about the infotainment. The MP3 player itself has fewer features and is clumsier to use than a 2001 MP3 player! Scrolling menu to select genre, artist, etc. Going "back" in a menu loses your sorting and indexing. Music indexing playback is alphabetic - not by track number - so if you want to play an album, you have to create a Playlist on a computer first.""

    Anonymous A., SC (2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"My Subaru that had 53,000 miles on it needed a short block replacement because it was burning oil. There was no explanation on why this occurred but the cost of repair was $7000. The issue was resolved by doing the repair."

    Head gasket

"We had our Outback serviced only by Subaru dealer as recommended by Subaru. Right before our 60k service, the oil light came on. I filled with oil and asked dealer about possible leak when service done. We were told that head gaskets were leaking and it would cost $6k to fix. This with only 60k miles on the car. Subaru America offered to pay less than a third of the cost. Also, the touch screen went bad after three years and had to be replaced. A year later we had to have electrical work done because of a parasitic drain due to Starlink. Just last week, we received a notice that there is a class action lawsuit regarding Eyesight. Subaru offers to pay 75% of cost to repair. This is my third Subaru, and definitely the last."

"Another Subaru outback and still replacing head gasket. We do follow the manufactures service recommendations so its not due to old antifreeze or oil"

Anonymous, NH (2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cylinder head gaskets both were leaking by 118000 miles. Dealer price to fix is $7000. I am told by dealer and internet research that the H6 engine (six cylinder, no longer offered) usually needs new head gaskets between 100K and 150K miles. This means pulling the engine and transmission out of the car and tearing down both heads. The problem is that the head gasket walls between the oil passages and the water passages break down and let water into the oil or water into the cylinders. These are aluminum blocks and will warp beyond repair if too much water gets into the cylinders. I love the car, but as an engineer, I'm appalled that this is a known problem that covers the last couple years of the H6 and hasn't been fixed. Unfortunately, I don't have a choice but to get it fixed since it will kill the engine if it gets worse. (Think of the early 70's CHEVROLET Vega with the head gaskets that dissolved in antifreeze and let water warp the block, junking the engine. I'm not saying this is the Subaru reason for the problem, just that the Vega episode shows the seriousness of this recurring defect.)"

I am a female senior. I have an extended warranty. Subaru will not cover it. Cost is almost $1000 Cdn per surface. i think this is a common problem due to poor quality materials."

""Buying the 2019 model car new in Dec 2018, I negotiated the cost of Subaru's Gold 7-year / 100K mile extended warranty to $2,200. I realize these are normally not worth the money and just a huge profit center for the dealership; but I thought it might get my money's worth - or at least have some peace of mind having just had so many problems with my previous non-Subaru car. In May 2025 I took the car to the dealership for a grinding noise and the aforementioned battery-killing problem (a poorly designed StarLink DCM module was the culprit). The service tech found oil and transmission leaks and a head leak. They performed $7,200 worth of warranty work on the car. So, I guess my $2,200 warranty cost paid for itself this time. But that took two weeks at the dealership and the hassles of borrowing a friend's car until I could get a dealer loaner car. I read some articles that Subaru had used a sub-optimal gasket sealant at the factory which was causing the unnecessary leaks. My car had 66,000 miles when they discovered leaks from four locations and required pulling the engine to get everything fixed. Yes, parts wear-out and leaks happen. But if it's true Subaru cut costs on something as simple as gaskets and sealant, that's horrible. I hope this costs Subaru tons of warranty money and they remediate the problem.""
