The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2022 Subaru Outback owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Android Auto

"Loses android auto connection every 2-3 weeks to Samsung 22 phone. Factory reset on Subaru temporarily fixes it. But is still an issue. Its only that phone."

Anonymous A., KY (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Apple CarPlay

"I've had a few problems with Apple Carplay, some of which appear to have been resolved by software updates and some of which are new problems or persist. Prior to updating the software, Carplay would sometimes not start when ai connected my phone. This once happened during a long trip, would not resolve, and I ended up using bluetooth audio to listen to my media and the car's built in navigation to get home. After recently updating to the most recent firmware, Carplay seems to start more reliably but I now have issues where various applications within Carplay will not play media. I will tap on a podcast or playlist and the now playing screen will be essentially grayed out, unable to load the requested content. Overall I absolutely love the technology in this car. And the infotainment screen in the Outback I purchased has never gone completely dark as it did in one I test drove but there are these bugs sometimes with ensuring CarPlay starts and is able to play the media I want."

Anonymous A., PA (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The head unit is defective. It started gradually over the last 12 months. It would sometimes not connect to my phone, then more often. Finally it would not connect at all."

Anonymous A., PA (2022 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Using Siri phone does pair or link with car"

Anonymous, SC (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen freezes up

"On ignition, the screen will indicate loading I have to stop the car, turn the ignition off and restart the car and that resolves the issue. Happens every couple of weeks"

Anonymous, MD (2022 Subaru Outback Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Most frustrating performance. Always delayed after starting vehicle. I now start the car up a couple minutes early so I can use the radio. The system always wants to change profiles when gear shift is placed in park."

Anonymous, GA (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When I start my car the screen takes for ever to change. Like if I want to change radio station, it take up to 30 secs to change. It will fix itself after about 2 min. It starts all over again when the car is turned off."

Anonymous A., NC (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"About half the time I start the car, the screen does not respond to touch. It's more of a problem when it's cold outside, like below 40. It resolves itself within 30-60 seconds, but it's annoying. Plus, my car won't tell me when it needs an oil change. Dealer says they fixed it, but they didn't. So many electronics and none can tell me when an out change is needed. Even the most basic cars have that functionality."

Anonymous A., PA (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Started almost 2 yrs ago. Has gotten a bit worse lately (Happens daily now). Screen won't respond when touched, particularly when trying to change a radio station. Can go 10 minutes or more before the button actually responds. Hasn't been fixed yet because Subaru won't repair these kind of things on the weekends which is the only time I could take my car there for servicing."

Anonymous, NB (2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The face scanner had issues. It would continuously beep and show to keep my eyes on the road. the only way to stop this was to cover the small window with electric tape. Surprisingly, that worked. It was ironic that I had an appointment that morning at my Subaru dealer for a normal service. they had to do a complete upload of the software, taking a couple hours. That solved the problem."

Anonymous A., NB (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Display screen freezes which makes it impossible to adjust the HVAC controls."

Anonymous, IN (2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The whole infotainment system is frozen. It won't accept iPhone or Android connections. It randomly plays the radio but will switch radio stations. None of the on-screen controls work. We took it to the Subaru dealership and because its out of warranty they recommend we replace it with an aftermarket system. It will cost about $2,500 or more to have the system replaced. But they will replace it with the same system that will probably develop the same problems."

Anonymous, UT (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car control console freezes up periodically. When parked and once while driving. Found a reset process online at a third party car enthusiast website."

Anonymous, VT (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"The entire screen would intermittently go blank while driving, causing you to lose navigation, radio, and all system(s) functions were disabled. The problem was resolved by a Subaru service provider that updated the system software."

Anonymous A., NY (2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The interface with a USB thumb drive (containing mp3's) is very unreliable and quite a hassle to use. It won't shuffle play correctly, and always locks to "repeat", which must manually be turned-off (every time you start the car). It also does not respond to voice commands for the USB thumb drive ("play artist", "play folder", "play genre", etc.) These must also be manually selected. We've had the dealer install updates (latest was the current one), as we were unable to do so through wifi. Also, mp3 songs via USB are limited to under 5,000, which is ridiculously low for a 2022 model vehicle. We're NOT satisfied with this and probably would buy this vehicle again mainly because of this continuing problem."

Anonymous, AZ (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio interface load won't load. Sometimes it will start after some time, other times it won't load even after an hour. Happens when start car, if working, it stays working. Dealer updated the software, but it made no difference."

Anonymous, VA (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Satellite radio would not boot up every time. It was fixed at the time of recall."

Anonymous, TX (2022 Subaru Outback Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"It has a constant rattle in the front dash area. I have not been able to fix it. The cruse-control fluctuates constantly. You set it to 50 and it will go up or down. Depending on the road."

Anonymous, AB (2022 Subaru Outback Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Over-the-air software update failed

"Tried multiple times to update the software ourselves and ended up taking it to the dealer twice."

Anonymous, AZ (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Car would sometimes fail to play music, podcasts, etc. even when plugged in (which should connect it to apple carplay). We got the car looked at and havent noticed the problem in several months"

Anonymous A., CA (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The connection between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the 2022 Subaru Outback failed after a gas stop on a 500 km trip. It restored after the next gas stop. Car has had a software update since. The connection has been randomly erratic over the last year. Sometimes only the rear speakers would play. Sometimes only left front ones. Sometimes mono rather than stereo. Then on subsequent trips the problem doesnt repeat."

Anonymous, AB (2022 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Does not pick up Favorites from iPhone 15 while on Bluetooth"

Anonymous, PA (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Radio

"The radio will periodically not work. Other times it will play really loud when you start the car. None of this occurs frequently and it almost always resolves itself by turning off the car and restarting. Ive never been been able to get it to the dealership while it occurs."

Anonymous, MO (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When starting vehicle, sound would be very high on the one side, and the alternate side did not work"

Anonymous, AB (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"XM Radio only works about 50% of the time. Sometimes it is not possible to change the station. Sometimes it indicates "Loading" and then nothing happens. Sometimes the display screen goes completely blank. Sometimes the display screen is inoperable. All of this occurs about 50% of the time and the dealership is unable to correct the problem."

Anonymous, WY (2022 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio will blast out of one speaker at any time"

Anonymous, NY (2022 Subaru Outback Limited)

Anonymous, MN (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Windshields are notoriously weak and subject to stress cracking. I have replaced 3 windshields in 2 years. Subaru replaced 1 because of stress crack at no charge, other 2 could not be repaired, simple impact results in Crack too severe to fix."

"Rear windshield shattered completely when closing driver's side door in the morning prior to driving. Subaru was fantastic in replacing at no cost, even though not under warranty or recall."

Anonymous, SC (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Strange noise coming from the rear of the car. I thought it may be part of the all wheel drive system but the Dealer said it was a rear wheel bearing. They provided a courtesy car for almost a week while due to a tech breaking a sensor and waiting for it to arrive. They covered it under warranty without any questions. Great to have a company stand behind a warranty without hassles."

Anonymous, BC (2022 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Its needed four windshields in three years. Never will we ever own another Subaru. I know your mag love these things but I will never buy another."

Anonymous A., ID (2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Seat belt sometimes does not retract and gets caught in door. When we closed door, the seat belt damaged a censor in door panel. Now we have cardboard duct taped to door panel since it is a very expensive door replacement cost. Selt belts do not automatically retract!"

Anonymous, DE (2022 Subaru Outback Unsure)

"The battery died four times. The first time it happened was when the car was about 6 months old . The last time the battery went dead was 8 months ago. The charging system was working properly and it seems as though the initial battery that came with the car was too small amperage to do its job. Subaru has a technical service bulletin advising dealers to replace the battery with a larger model which requires adapting the battery case in order for the larger battery to fit. The battery that came with the car tested out okay. There did not seem to be any parasitic drain and I suspect that short trips and computer software that tries to maximize gas mileage by controlling the alternator's charging rate may have contributed to the experience of the battery dying. Since it was replaced, I have not had a problem. The battery mounting case, hardware, wiring adjustment, new battery, and installation cost approximately $500. The problem was not covered under warranty. However, Subaru provided a goodwill coupon in the amount of $250 which I've been using for basic maintenance costs such as oil changes."

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"An Accident in South Carolina on 2.28.23, very strange area with no places to stop for help. When finally did see a motel, I stopped and call my wife and insurance company. The accident, I could not avoid. I was boxed in with large trucks around me, who managed to avoid the chair. When one truck swerved around the chair, I was left looking at a wooden chair with 2" thick legs and 1" spindles, I have about 50 feet to react, I tried encroaching on the right lane but was quickly honked at. So I had to hit the chair at about 50 mph. I travelled about 10 miles before seeing the motel. By the time the car was towed, and then the Hadwin-White body shop tried to start my engine, it was frozen with only 5790 miles, had yet to get my 1st oil change. I was very impressed with Hadwin-White's body and service departments and Amica, insurance I have used since 1978, 46 years. Anyhow, I got a brand new engine from Subaru America. Unfortunately, I drove my car very little in the past year. Prior injuries on my low back came screaming to my attention. Last August, he wanted to fuse L3-S1. Realizing that would make me recline when eating, I hit the pause button. I had several falls and was hospitalized for a month recovering from RSV and a 105 degree fever. Between all that living, I had another MRI and visiting my Neuro-Surgeon. In February, he decided to do a L2-L5 Laminectomy. He also explained that he would free up numerous pinched nerves and eliminate two herniated discs. That was a lot of nerves being moved out of the way, so I'll take up tp a year (or more) to calm down. I concluded that he was going to Dremel me a lot and gave him the nod for the surgery. Spinal surgery sure has changed in the last 34 years. Since getting my Subaru back, I have loved driving it more than before - there were problems with the safety equipment - it was driving me crazy. But now, with the reboot - something changed and I am sane again. Still have not driven enough for an oil change. And with the low driving in two years, I wonder if we should sell one of the cars and invest the money in the stock market for it to grow in 4-5 years before getting a newer car."

Anonymous, MD (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While driving the engine started a very loud knocking and then lost power. The engine was found to be "full of metal" and required a complete engine replacement. Covered under warranty."

Anonymous A., CA (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other major engine problem

"My Mechanic notice an oil leak when he was changing the oil. The car had to be left at the dealer for 2.5 business days for the oil pan reseal repair. It was completely covered under warrantee."

Anonymous A., CA (2022 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The lower Oil Gasket was found leaking during an oil change. While the car was in the shop, a free rental car was given. The gasket was repaired under warranty."

"On the highway it's noisy compared to my old suzuki and my hyundia. I haven't fixed it. They are replacing the radio and haven't fixed the rattles. The airconditioner smell is still there even after taking it in. It's a used car so they won't fit the rattle unless I pay for it. This has been an ongoing bunch of issues since I purchased it in 2022"

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other noises & leaks problem

"on cold weather, squeaks from the front windshield"

Anonymous, QC (2022 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is more road noise at highway speed than I might have anticipated. Cabin noise is pronounced but not intolerable. I wish there was more sound insulation for both road and wind noise."

Anonymous A., PA (2022 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This particular noise was situated above my head and to the left in the roof liner. As I drive this noise would usually cause me to try to stop it so I would use my left hand and push up on the roof liner. This spot is between the roof window and the left side. I tired many ways to stop it. One was to stuff a sock to the right of the roof window, then closing the window. But other times I would have to push on the roof. Very annoying. My wife, riding shotgun can't hear the noise and says I am hearing things... I made a special trip to my dealer, 1.5 hour drive. I went out with the tech and he heard it too. They say they tried to fix it but couldn't find the issue. But, whatever they did, the problem was solved."

    What Owners Say

    Pulsation or vibration

    What Owners Say

Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"The rate of acceleration is uneven. I accelerate to about 15 mph then it is as if I am lifting my foot off the gas pedal. They tried 4 time to fix it by "relearning the transmission", cleaning out the injectors, reattaching a hose and then claiming that there is no issue and that is how they all are. They kept the car a few times overnight."

Anonymous A., FL (2022 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"While driving the car, the check engine light came on. We contacted the dealer to bring it in. When we shifted the car into reverse, it moved forward. The same thing happened in neutral. When we shifted it into drive, the car did not move at all. The car had to be towed to the dealer, and after almost two weeks, the transmission was replaced. Luckily, this did not happen far from home, and the car was still under warranty."

    Steering And Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Alignment

"During the 20,000 km scheduled maintenance at the dealer, I was told the vehicle needed an alignment which cost over $300 (Canadian). I authorized the repair, but was surprised an alignement was required with the low mileage. I have owned several 9 new vehicles (not Subaru's), and this is the first time this happened to me. They said I must of hit a bad bump which I do not believe to be true. They said the next service it would not need an alignment which in itself seem odd if I did hit a major bump causing an alignment issue. I owned a Kia Rondo for 9 years and have requested to have the aligmentment checked on several occasions which never resulted in requiring an alignment (several different repair shops). I always have my vehicles maintained by the dealer while they are under warranty."
