    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Android Auto

"Sometimes won't connect with phone, then GPS doesn't work. Sometimes loses connection during a trip and GPS stops. (The built in GPS is useless--asks for state, city, zip, address--wants too much information."

Anonymous, OH (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Apple CarPlay

"It drops calls while talking on the phone. It stops working when using it as a gps"

Anonymous A., SK (2023 Subaru Outback Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The Apple Car Play usually links up there were problems when I first got the car. A couple of updates has resolved the issue. The Apple phone overheats in the docking station which is a problem for long trips. We usually plug it into the USB charger. (The docking station is so small there is no air circulation). Recently we were plugged into the USB Charger, the phone got warm. which caused the phone not to connect to the info system. It started with music freezing up when switching from one gendre to another on Pandora. Then map app stopped working. We changed phones and repaired with the other phone. Cooled down the apple phone. This is fine if you have a passenger to fix the issue and reboot and cool off the phone. This is not good if you are the only one in the car on a long trip and making a change in routes and everything fails. I had to pull over and disconnect everything, and attempt to use the car's GPS that was downloaded to finish my trip. When I asked the dealership about the GPS, etc. I was told to use Apple carplay since it is a better interface then what comes with the vehicle. Some of the problems went away with the latest update to the info system."

Anonymous, RI (2023 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen freezes up

"When using Apple CarPlay every hour or so the display freezes up then crashes. This has not been resolved."

Anonymous A., CT (2023 Subaru Outback XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Prompts to grip steering wheel while holding it. Switching from reverse to drive, computer is slow to respond. The conputer is generally slow to respond."

Anonymous, NJ (2023 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The infotainment screen is painfully slow, especially during start-up, so as to be a significant safety issue/distraction when driving. This vehicle was built during the chip shortage and it's clear that they settled for a CPU way less powerful than what's needed to drive the system. The fact that so many formerly knob controls are integrated into the screen makes it especially frustrating to control your car. For example, when you start the car, and the heat or air conditioning is blasting from your last use, you can't change it for about 15-20 seconds until the infotainment systems becomes usable. It has "driver recognition" but still asks me to ccept the Ts&Cs every time I start the car...why...it knows me already! The CD player in the console does not interface correctly with the system and exhibits odd behavior. Sometimes, the screen goes blank altogether while it's "thinking." I get infotainment system software updates every time I go in for an oil change, but none have improved the performance. It is my opinion that Subaru should issue (down right "owes us") a manufacturer free upgrade of the infotainment processor before someone dies fiddling with it at speed or in traffic."

Anonymous, WA (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Shortly after I bought it the screen sometimes freezes up or wont respond when I touch it. Example one day I had to pull over turn off the car and open and close the door and restart the car for the radio to come back on"

Anonymous A., SK (2023 Subaru Outback Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen goes blank

"The screen freezes up and then goes blank. The back-up camera is still able to pop-up on the screen though. The speed-maintaining aspect of cruise control is still active, but the lane assist and distance control go down. AC controls go down. Basically everything but the more basic functions of the car go down"

Anonymous, AR (2023 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"If I use the phone's GPS system (Google Maps) there's no telling what will happen lol. It might come over the speakers too soft to hear, it might come over the speakers perfectly, or it might not come over the speakers at all but I can hear it from the phone."

Anonymous A., GA (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Requires frequent updates where it is connected to WiFi. If not updated, it will not work. Very inconvenient as when I need it there is not WiFi available"

Anonymous A., NM (2023 Subaru Outback)

"I have tried a few times to use the Tom-tom GPS that was installed as an upgrade. It cost $500 and I never use it. Waste of money. It does not recognize voice commands. (neither does the internal phone recognize voice commands). I successfully got the GPS to work the one time I used it locally and was able to type in exactly where I was going. I don't have time to teach the system my voice and enter all of the addresses I go to. It is a cumbersome product. We use our phone navigation apps."

Anonymous, RI (2023 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Various functions simply change settings or stop working temporarily."

Anonymous A., GA (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"when temp gets colder the info screen is slow when operating touch screen"

Anonymous A., NS (2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"While driving, the Auto Ignition shutoff engaged at a traffic light. I shut off the application, and the car suddenly stopped. When it was restarted, the XMode light was lit, the Eyesight system was disabled, as was the cruise control, RAB, and the Service engine light came on. The car required a transmission relearn (Subarus term) which took about 2 hours. A huge inconvenience, since I was 1300 miles from my home dealership and in a foreign country."

Anonymous, BC (2023 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"CarPlay connected when purchased. Several month later it stopped connecting."

Anonymous, MD (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes won't/can't connect or loses connection."

Anonymous, OH (2023 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"Battery completely drained after opening and closing the hatch during an outing. Side mirror lights remain on all the time the rear hatch is open, negating the possibility of tailgating. Got a jump. Took to dealer the next day. Dealer tested battery, said it was ok. The next week, we went on a long trip and the battery failed consistently. Took back to the dealer after the trip and they replaced the battery with a larger battery...which should have been installed in the first place."

    Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, water pump, thermostat, antifreeze leaks, overheating.

    What Owners Say

    Other engine cooling problem

"One Saturday morning my 2023 Outback would not start. I had to have the car towed to the dealer. On Monday the dealer service department determined that the problem was caused by the thermo control valve, which they replaced. The problem was covered by the warranty, so there was no cost to me. Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
