    Overall Reliability

We expect the 2025 Outback will be more reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2022, 2023 and 2024 models.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2024 Subaru Outback owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Apple CarPlay

"Bugs in Apple CarPlay caused frequent, but inconsistent, problems in pairing my iPhone."

Anonymous, FL (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Issues are all interconnected. I have to either not leave the driveway as planned or pull over to try and address issues. You cant fix them and continue to drive the car. The entire info system is a hot mess. If I had realized the extent of it I wouldve purchased a totally different car. Subaru needs to study the Kia system and totally redesign theirs. Its that bad."

Anonymous, AK (2024 Subaru Outback XT)

"In my 2020 Subaru outback I was able to connect to my cars Wi-Fi while accessing CarPlay by plugging in my phone. Apparently I cannot do both Wi-Fi and Apple CarPlay via plug in this newer vehicle. Apple CarPlay always connects over Bluetooth and connects with a wire. I cant use my own cars Wi-Fi. Only passengers can."

Anonymous A., NY (2024 Subaru Outback Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"CarPlay does not work. You can only use your phone in the car for approximately three minutes and then the Subaru microphone drops - EVERYTIME. I would have never purchased this car if I know."

Anonymous A., CA (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The system will occasionally not pair with drivers phone no matter what we try. This prevents us from using Google maps which are FAR superior to Subarus built in mapping. The voice prompts are tinny and sound awful. Points of Interest are extremely limited to Subarus predetermined categories. The interface is also slow and tedious."

Anonymous, TN (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Pairing is haphazard. Sometimes doesn't pair at all. Need to shut car off, restart. Sometimes pairing with WAZE drops in middle of a trip. Need to pull over, turn off engine, restart...and pray."

Anonymous, OR (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"CarPlay randomly stops pairing and then wont pair again until you turn off Bluetooth and WiFi and turn them back on. Very annoying, I wish it would just connect through the lightning cable as it did on previous models!"

Anonymous A., MN (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen freezes up

"It started when Id had the car a week and intermittently occurs. Need to take the car into the dealer."

Anonymous, CA (2024 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The air conditioning controls are in the display screen. At start up, the screen almost always takes a fair bit of time to boot up causing frustration. Most importantly, the screen-based air conditioning controls create an inherent safety hazard forcing you to look away from the road to manipulate air conditioning / HVAC. This is further exacerbated in inclement weather (e.g., when wearing gloves) which is when you need to pay the most amount of attention to the road. I wish all manufacturers would stop using screen-based HVAC controls and provided a manual, tactile, no-look access to frequently used comfort, convenience, and safety features. Same thing applies to safety features. Prior outbacks had hard buttons to turn off safety features by clicking and holding. This is now down in the infotainment screen creating additional safety hazards."

Anonymous A., AZ (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"just stopped working - no touch inputs worked - frozen"

Anonymous, CO (2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When cold, display screen pauses for 20 or 30 seconds before responding."

Anonymous A., CO (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes when you press one of the "buttons" there is a significant delay in response. Sometimes up to 10 seconds for the input to be recognized. You end up pushing the "button" several times thinking that you may have not pressed it hard enough but then when it does respond it will respond to all of your inputs at once (ex. if you press the auto start/stop button and it doesn't respond, and then you wait and press it again and it doesn't respond, and then you wait and press it again, then when it finally responds it will turn the feature on and off several times in rapid succession."

Anonymous, MA (2024 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"Upon starting car one morning, entire infotainment/Eyesight system wouldn't load -- equivalent to the blue screen of death. When we started driving, all safety feature -- lane departure, etc. -- were disabled and off as well. Turned car off and restarted after 10 minutes, and systems returned to normal. Has operated normally since. Fingers crossed."

Anonymous, OR (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"It intermittently does not pass through audio, i.e., no volume. Have not yet had time to discuss the issue with our dealer."

Anonymous A., MO (2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS system went down as we were driving through the middle of Nashville coming home from vacation."

Anonymous, MO (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"The phone is the big problem but the onscreen display is about 10 years behind status quo."

Anonymous A., CA (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Another Subaru fail. Just the clunkiest thing ever see prior comments. Hard to describe this fail but it takes repeated effort to get the phones paired correctly"

Anonymous, AK (2024 Subaru Outback XT)

"Pairing constantly stops and the person on the call can no longer hear me."

Anonymous, CA (2024 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My wife's phone paired easily. My phone did not when we were both in the car. My phone paired successfully when she was not in the car."

Anonymous A., MO (2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The phone pairing problem was the result of bugs in Apple CarPlay which were resolved by the dealer updating it."

Anonymous, FL (2024 Subaru Outback Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Radio

"I have Sirius radio and it tends to change stations randomly."

Anonymous, BC (2024 Subaru Outback XT 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Voice control commands

"I only use my phone to search for directions someplace. The in car voice recognition system doesnt recognize anything that I ask for even when I ask specifically for a business name and a city and state."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
