Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2021 Tesla Model Y owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"2022, once, 2022"

Anonymous A., FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"In a busy intersection, I stopped and reversed slightly when I realized I couldn't make it through the intersection before the light changed. My screen went blank but at the time I didn't know how to restart the software. I also didn't know the car would drive without the screen active. These are fundamental features that Tesla should tell new purchasers when giving their little orientation talk before you drive off the lot. I had to go online while holding up traffic in a busy intersection to find out how to restart the screen (hold the two buttons on the steering wheel down together for at least 5 seconds)."

Anonymous, BC (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
Other in-car electronics problem

"There was a setting on the cat that would only allow one driver's phone to be connected. I went back to the dealer 4 times. The problem was finally fixes but requires delving several layers into the software to find the button that fixed the problem."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

"1) Plastic trim under rear seat came loose 2) Trunk Carpet unattached and needed to be replaced"

Anonymous A., FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Started within the first 12 months of ownership. General paint chips noticed on the front hood of the car. In the last two months the car went to a car Wash and paint was washed Off one of the side mirrors"

Anonymous, KS (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Keyless entry

"iPhone app acting as a key for the car has been incredibly problematic, Ive been locked out in parking lots and had to call my husband to come get me bringing a physical key card. I carry a physical card at all times but sometimes leave a bag in the car, like when Im dropping my daughter off at school. And I return to find I cant get back into the car. It will cost $300 Canadian for me to get a key fob and I have no confidence it wont have the same problems."

Anonymous, ON (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
Other electrical system problem

"The door release button on the driver side failed. The service center determined the only fix was replacing the whole door panel assembly and it took 3x before they were able to fix it with a new panel that was not damaged from transport in some way."

Anonymous, FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

/ 5

"When auto climate control is on the front passenger area gets blasted with hot air only - not cold air. When we reboot the whole car it works for two minutes and then only blows hot air."

Anonymous A., CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
Other climate system problem

"Our Y has a third row, we have three kids, two sit in that third row. There is no air flow provided to the third row. Its simply a bad design."

/ 5

What Owners Say

Other driveline problem

"There was a pronounced squeak on the front right side. They removed and replaced "control arm upper front pair" There was also a nylon patch applied, quantity 4. I drove home on the highway and noticed a pull to the left. When I hit surfing streets, the car was groaning when I turned left. Metal on metal sound. I phoned the dealer and they told me to have it towed back to them. The tow truck was supposedly 45 minutes away. 5 hours later, I canceled it. I didn't want a tow truck coming to my home after 10 pm. I had someone follow me to the dealership the next day. They found "bushing on the arm defective" They removed and replaced the lateral link and hardware. Front lower lateral link assembly, nut, bolt, nylon patch. All was covered under warranty"

Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Squeaking

"Since buying the car, the breaks have started squeaking when it is cold. The first time, I took it in and pled my case that the car was too new fir breaks to be squeaking. They fixed it at no cost. They fixed it by cleaning out the breaks. They said they would deploy an update tgat used less of the regenerative breaking during cold weather (this was apparently causing the issue). The cleaning fix worked for about 2 years. But Now the breaks have started squeaking again but I am not sure they will cu eg it because it is 3 years old. I love the car otherwise."

Anonymous, CO (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"In June we received an onscreen notice saying the car had detected a problem with the electric battery unit. The message stated that the car was safe to drive, but we should schedule service soon. Our battery range (in miles) began to drop over the next 2 weeks. In late June, we scheduled a service visit with Tesla. They stated that the battery pack had failed. They replaced the battery pack during a one-day appointment and charged the new battery. All of this was done at no cost to us. A Tesla representative called me the next day to discuss any issues I might have. I was pleased with the service received."
