SUV and truck owners face a challenge in choosing the best replacement tires for their needs, with choices spanning from all-season tires to rugged all-terrain tires. Between those tire types, there’s a wide range of performance characteristics to consider. To help with choosing the right tire, we present the very best tire models in each category based on our extensive testing.

    MORE ON TIRES

When choosing a tire, it’s important to understand which category to focus on. Buying the first set of replacement tires can be straightforward because you can use the ones currently on the vehicle as a reference. But if you bought the vehicle used or you previously replaced the tires, check the recommendation in your vehicle’s owner’s manual or the tire information placard found on the driver’s doorjamb.

You can choose a tire with greater capability, such as a true all-season truck or an all-terrain truck tire, but don’t move down in capability because it can have an impact on performance and safety, especially when hauling heavy loads or pulling trailers.

Many subcompact and compact SUVs can simply use regular all-season tires, whereas midsized models should have at least all-season SUV tires. Full-sized SUVs and pickup trucks typically wear all-season truck or all-terrain tires that can support more rigorous demands. (Learn more in our tire buying guide.)

Our test program covers all-season, all-season SUV, all-season truck, all-terrain truck, winter/snow, and winter/snow truck tires. Below, we highlight the best-performing models in each category to help Consumer Reports members make a smart choice with their next replacement tire purchase.

    How CR Tests Tires

Consumer Reports tests more than 40 tire models every year, including those suited for cars, SUVs, and trucks. This massive program involves the purchase, installation, and evaluation of about 800 tires every 12 months.

    More on Tires

We test them at our track in Connecticut for wet and dry braking and handling, ride comfort and quietness, and resistance to hydroplaning (when water gets between the tire and the pavement). We perform our snow-traction tests at our Auto Test Center and in northern Michigan. Ice-braking evaluations are done at a skating rink.

We also commission outside labs to measure each tire’s rolling resistance, which affects fuel economy, and run extensive 16,000-mile treadwear tests on public roads in western Texas. The results from those real-world tests are used to predict tread life, enabling us to offer buying advice based on actual miles driven instead of government ratings or manufacturer promises.

The best car tires featured below can steer you in the right direction. (If you own a car, we have a separate list just for you.) Bear in mind that not every tire is available in every size, and you may have specific performance priorities, such as hydroplaning resistance and wet grip in especially rainy areas.

Our dynamic ratings chart allows you to fine-tune your selection based on criteria that matter most to you, and our tire finder will match tires to your specific car.

Below, we highlight the best SUV and truck tires in several key categories.
