    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2023 Toyota bZ4X owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Android Auto

"The Android Auto doesn't stay connected and has to be set every time I start the car. It's easier to connect with Bluetooth, but I don't get the smooth graphics or all functions Android provides."

Anonymous, UT (2023 Toyota bZ4X Limited Electric)
    Apple CarPlay

"Sometimes when is cold , phone cannot connect even wired with Bz4x"

Anonymous, QC (2023 Toyota bZ4X XLE Electric)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Thought I already answered this. The regeneration system fails regularly. The car will leap forward if Im accelerating at the time a slight safety issue depending on the traffic situation. The dealer denies there is a problem after scanning the system. Yet recently after a discussion with the service department the problem has diminished in frequency but hasnt totally disappeared. Is it possible there was a software fix without visiting the dealer? AM I NOW ANSWERING THE SAME QUESTION AGAIN.? I only have one vehicle."

Anonymous A., BC (2023 Toyota bZ4X XLE Electric)

"The two screens dim for relatively brief periods of time and apart from being annoying do not appear to affect function."

Anonymous A., BC (2023 Toyota bZ4X XLE Electric)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The screen interface is terrible. It does not pair with my iphone or our 2nd iphone (spouse). It needs a complete overhaul. When I rent a car it sees my phone instantly and has no problem pairing with my iphone which it has never encountered before but the Bz4x cannot do this with my iphone or my spouse's which we laboriously entered into it's system. The software is crap! And it needs to be completely replaced. Get a good programmer, hire someone from Apple or Tesla!"

    Anonymous A., CA (2023 Toyota bZ4X Electric)
    Voice control commands

"This software also does not work."

    Anonymous A., CA (2023 Toyota bZ4X Electric)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"It was cold.iutaide with snow, about 25F. The cars display was black/flashing/fading and notices said brake, steering, and operating systems were compromised.i had the dealer take it in and it was a defective 12v battery. They replaced it. I layer in the season experienced the same problem, but as the day warmed, the car became drivable. I have not had the problem again."

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

    What Owners Say

    Other electric/hybrid charging problem

"I have only used a fast charger once but was surprised to see that the last 20% dramatically slowed down and took more than two hours just for the 20%. Not much of a sample. I normally charge at home with a 240 charger and it works to spec. Approximately 10-11 hours for a full charge. I keep the vehicle set to an 80% max pursuant to advice to obtain best battery longevity. My experience with the vehicles tendency to drop out of regeneration mode leaves me mystified. The only apparent correlation is that it does it less frequently when the battery is less than 50% charged. Also it does have certain points on my daily drive where it usually fails. During my six month checkup my dealership did a scan and reported that there is no malfunction in the system but that it may be happening because the battery is fully or almost fully charged. At that date they also did a reboot pursuant to recall Id been previously advised of by mail. I had hoped it would remedy the situation. It did not. I have my next scheduled service set for the end of May. When I set it up I was asked about any issues Im having. I described the present situation and was told they have no knowledge of the problem. I pointed out if they looked at online forums from other bZ4x owners they would see that there are numerous owners complaining about this problem or worse such as it doesnt work at all or barely does. Subsequent to this conversation I noticed that the problem resolved itself to some degree but it still largely persists. Is it possible that Toyota can download a software fix by wifi? In any event the reason apart from the safety issue arising from the vehicle suddenly increasing acceleration if the mode fails while Im on the accelerator which poses an obvious danger, I find Toyotas response annoying. 1) Because they are denying a problem exists when it clearly does and 2) because the dealer service department has the temerity to tell me I cant be experiencing the problem purely because the manufacturer denies the problem. Also because I live 800 ft above sea level where the my islands only village is also a port, I drive up and down significant hills every day. When the regeneration system fails it obviously affects my driving range which given the vehicles meagre ascribed range of around 350kilometres is not helping. Ive owned 8 previous Toyotas from a 69 Corolla to a 95 Avalon and have been quite satisfied with the experience. I find the present attitude from Toyota personally insulting and off brand. Hopefully they will seek to remedy this situation in the near future."
