Road Test

Introduced in 1999, the Camry Solara is a coupe or convertible version of the Camry sedan. There are two engine choices, a 3.0-liter, 200-hp V6 or a base 2.2-liter,135-hp Four. It nicely balances performance and refinement. Although the Solara is no sports car, it handles nimbly. It has a strong, smooth engine, a comfortable and very quiet ride, and a fairly hospitable rear seat.

Model History
2004-
Current Generation

Available in coupe and convertible versions, the Camry Solara is a sportier, two-door version of the Camry sedan. While the ride is comfortable and well controlled, it's noticeably tauter than that of the four-door. Handling is also more nimble, though it falls short of feeling sporty. Over the years, engine choices included adequate four-cylinders and a smooth, strong V6. The Solara's cabin is well-appointed and serenely quiet, and the front seats are comfortable and supportive. The rear seat is suitable for two average-sized adults. Our tested convertible suffered from some body shake, but the top is well insulated. Rearward visibility, however, was horrible.
