    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"Problem was resolved two weeks later"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Started in April 2025. Symptom was squealing serpentine belt."

    Anonymous A., MI (2016 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Automatic climate control

    "Damper control arm broke"

    Anonymous, ON (2016 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Blower (fan) motor

"The blower fan would intermittently work. This was particularly a problem during hot weather. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. When the weather is mild, the problem does not exist. Weve had the car looked at several times by the dealership, and now seems to be resolved."

Anonymous, (2016 Toyota Corolla LE Premium 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The blower started to slow down after I had an accident and my vehicle was repaired. It would start blowing hot air then I would turn the AC off and on. It would come back on with cold air. Now it seems like the connection has completely disconnected. Not working at all"

    Anonymous A., (2016 Toyota Corolla S Plus 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Refrigerant leaks

""My AC stopped cooling air last fall. When I brought the car in for service, they did a "refresh" and installed new refrigerant with a dye. A few weeks later, it stopped cooling again, and they determined there was a leak around the condenser. They had to replace some piping and refill the refrigerant again, but it was quite costly due to labor, since they basically had to uninstall a bunch of parts to get to the leaky area.""

Anonymous, VA (2016 Toyota Corolla S Plus 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

"Very common and annoying problem in the 2015-2019 Corollas. The radio touchscreen stops working requiring thousands to replace."

Anonymous, MS (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"The clock display and the backup camera view in this car are useless. My main issue is the car manual - the one that came with the car has pictures different from the car. To get the correct manual, which I should have, would cost $100. That's wrong!"

Anonymous, LA (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

""The low tire warning light comes on flashing, then stays without flashing indefinitely.""

Anonymous A., FL (2016 Toyota Corolla Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"I previously owned an Apple IPhone 8 that was connected to vehicles Bluetooth spouse inherited the i8 I purchased a new iPhone 13, , and cant disconnect the i8 and connect the i13"

Anonymous A., TX (2016 Toyota Corolla Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The phone actually pairs and allows music to play. It will allow phone calls to play through the radio but does not receive voice from the car. The person on the other end of the call cannot hear anything being said."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

""Paint peeled in multiple locations on car. Hood, roof, quarter panels etc. Had to get spots painted.""

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

""I noted patches of peeling paint when I bought the car in February of this year. After checking online, I found that Toyota had an enhanced warranty program for this particular problem which included Toyotas with super white paint job. A local Toyota dealership with a collision center repainted the car and it looks just fine.""

Anonymous, LA (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The clear coat lifted off leaving the paint exposed allowing rust. The business that repainted my car said they repaint at least 5 Toyota Corollas every day."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    "wouldn't start with keyless start."

    Anonymous, VA (2016 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

""Keyless entry stopped working. Figured it needed a new battery. Toyota dealer tried to sell me new remotes and programming for well over $100. Came home did a google search and replaced the battery myself. Tricky but doable. Toyota service department is a shark tank. Have seen this many times which is why when I needed a new ride, I bought a Honda. I am DONE with Toyota due to their service departments.""

    Anonymous, SC (2016 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"My key fobs quit working, batteries were not the issue, they think the sensor in my car is bad. It was cheaper for me to get an aftermarket remote start that would unlock my doors also."

    Anonymous, MO (2016 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Squeaks or rattles

"Last year I started hearing rattles on bumps or turns. Repair ship found defective parts and replaced them. The noise continued. I filed NHSTA complaint. Toyota eventually looked at my car and found loose subframe bolts. They tightened them. Newer models apparently have this as a standard maintenance item. There were no service bulletins nor upgraded maintenance schedule."

In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
    Summary:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
