    First Take
The mid-sized Highlander Hybrid SUV, redesigned for 2014, aced our tests. It handles more responsively, the ride remains unruffled, and the spacious interior has lots of storage nooks. A widened third row holds three people comfortably. The Hybrid powertrain uses a strong V6, CVT transmission, and three electric motors. We averaged 25 mpg, which is good, but since all Hybrids come loaded, it's apt to take a long time to recoup the price premium via fuel savings. The large touchscreen infotainment system is easy to use but some buttons are a bit of a reach. Access is easy front and rear and even a scramble to the third row is not too taxing. BSW and RCTW are standard. FCW, AEB, LDW, and ACC are optional.
