The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"The failure of the 12v battery makes the hybrid system unreliable and sketchy. It would make the car inoperable for several minutes and the screens would flash. Once the battery was replaced, everything has been operating fine."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)
    Keyless entry

"Touch-to-open function on driver's door stopped working, since July 2023. Problem not fixed. Toyota declined to repair under Toyota extended warranty contract, taking the position that the problem was caused by frayed wires or corrosion (!)"

Anonymous, (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

    Steering And Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Power steering

"Steering wheel was squeaking when turned. It started in February 2024. At first visit to dealership, they lubricated the shaft but noise got worse. New visit to dealership revealed that they had to change the steering column sub assembly, the steering wheel motor assembly, steering locks. They also found out they had to change the axle shaft on the driver side due to a bushing failing, letting water in which created rust and swelling. Repairs fixed the problems"

Anonymous A., MA (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)
    Shocks or struts

"One front shock was leaking. I had to replace both The cost was over $1,400."

    What Owners Say

    CV joint

"Had the CV boots replaced at just under 100k. Six months later the front end began shaking and had to have the cv joint and axel replaced on the right side. The dealer did it without cost to me."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

"Resulted from the cv joint problem."

    What Owners Say

    Pulsation or vibration

Anonymous A., IL (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)
    Rotors

"stopped driving as I think it did not brake as fast as it should and was very noisy"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"In November 2021, with fully closed sunroof, after heavy downpour, water came out of left passenger seat belt assembly located on left side of car. Seat belt was soaked. I noticed that the left rubber gasket had shrunk/perished. On 05/17/2022, I notified my car dealership of the gasket condition and water infiltration. We could also hear loud wind and could see the sky from the middle left corner of the sunroof (which happens with cold and rainy weather when rubber is stiffer and shrunk). Dealer cleared the drain channels (which were not the source of the problem) and could not duplicate issue. Sunroof gasket is completely cooked, dry and brittle, and missing about in length compared to the other side. Previous dealership said that to replace the seal, the entire sunroom assembly would have to be removed, costly thousands of dollars. They suggested going to a body shop and ask them to apply silicone on the seal. This has not been done. As of 05/14/2024, wind and water infiltration continue to worsen."

Anonymous A., MA (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

"The screen kept showing incorrect information. The whole unit needed to be replaced. Fortunately it was covered by warranty. It happened just 500 miles before 100,000 mile warranty ran out."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

    EV Battery

    What Owners Say

    Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"No problems with 2017 Highlander Hybrid until sudden warning lights & alarms at 80k miles while driving 80mph on interstate; warning was "Hybrid Engine Stopped" informing to pull off road and take car to dealer. Engine started smoking, caught fire, entire front of car damaged. Car totaled."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.5-L V6 hybrid)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"An oxygen sensor that is located on the top of the engine, but under the injection system went bad. In order to change it, the injection system and manifold had to be removed. The cost was over $1000 due to the labor involved. The part was very inexpensive! On the good side, I got the spark plugs changed while the manifold was off which would normally have cost $750, so at least there was some benefit to the procedure."
