    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen freezes up

"The display unit will work -- we are able to see the map, or audio screen, then when you try to click on the touch screen you can't, the music will play but you can't change the song or enter a different address into the navigation suddenly. Then the screen will go black and then restart itself (the Toyota welcome screen comes on). Then it will work for a time afterwards, some times the rest of the day sometimes only a few minutes. Further, the 2 USB outlets up front don't work so we can't charge our phones either. We've had the diagnostic tool hooked up to the car and it shows multiple errors regarding the display system. We plan on getting a new, updated unit with Apple CarPlay so we're not fixing this original display."

    Anonymous A., VA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Display screen goes blank

"Radio/GPS/entertainment screen would go completely blank as if the car had turned off while I was driving. Driving/steering/brakes were not affected, and screen came back on within 30-60 seconds. However, it made me concerned that other electrical systems might also be affected. When screen came back on it went thru boot up as tho the car had been turned off and back on. Dealer said it would cost several thousand dollars to replace. Not worth it."

Anonymous, LA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Quite sure its a short in the electronics, cant afford to have it fixed."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

    "It randomly turns off."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited)
    Hardware replacement

"The main center screen began turning on and off on its own and changing radio stations. It required the removal of the head unit and a refurbishment of that unit since no new refurbs were available $750 to do the refurb plus labor in and out. A new unit lists at $6k."

    Anonymous A., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"During phone calls using an iPhone, there is an echo during calls"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone connection "pops" on both ends. Problem since the beginning and dealer's rep tried to fix it, but didn't."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"I first noticed that I could not hang up a call by pressing the end button on the touch screen. It devolved into dropping the bluetooth pairing and losing the call. The screen would then go blank and reset itself as if I had just started the car. The dealership said the whole system would have to replaced and it would cost as least $1,000 so we haven't replaced it. We will look for a cheaper alternative."

    Anonymous A., MS (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"Water leak into passenger compartment (wet carpet and mats). Mechanic found drain holes plugged from debris probably from trees. Drain holes are too small and easily become clogged."

    Anonymous A., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"sun roof leaking into driver's floor. Had dealer blow out clogged drain tube"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"Sunroof drain plug overflow into passenger B column, wetting the seatbelt, overflowing onto the floor"

Anonymous, BC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Other noises & leaks problem

"Water/fluid began leaking in the rear passenger seats. It was linked to the windshield washer fluid hose that runs over the cab. It developed a leak and was estimated to be $500 to repair due to having to remove the interior roof of the vehicle. We solved the leak by plugging the hose at the front end windshield washer reservoir."

    Anonymous A., WI (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Squeaks or rattles

"Rear bushing squeaks over every bump, attitude change in the rear suspension"

Anonymous, BC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"If I go over an uneven surface, I hear load squeaks from the rear suspension. The Toyota dealer is unable to resolve this. I suspect I need replace a spring or strut somewhere. I think lubrication would resolve it somehow, but I'm not a mechanic."

    Anonymous A., PA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The roof racks were found to be vibrating at highway speeds causing a rattle in the undercarriage of the vehicle. It took multiple visits and finally a different dealer to find the problem due to the roof racks."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    Paint And Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

    What Owners Say

    Other paint & trim problem

"Toyota puts a plastic on the car and this one got mold under it. Toyota claims that the plastic is meant to be removed and they won't correct it but I simply don't believe them. I'm going to have to get a body shop to do the work. Once the plastic is removed a good wash and wax "should" put the car in great condition. I've been told that the plastic is to protect against rock dings and has nothing to do with shipping a new car. This started about three years ago."

    Anonymous A., NC (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Water infiltrated the rear light about two years ago. It has not effected the function of the lamp."

    Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Highlander 3.5-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint on hood right next to windshield holds water . It causes the paint to become defective"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Clear coat peeled on front bumper"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The paint began to flake off on the rear lift gate. Then we noticed other small places where paint was coming off. We took it to the dealer and were told of an unannounced recall on the paint. The Highlander is currently in a paint shop being repaired at no cost and we have a loaner (a Corolla) at no cost."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"I went to my local dealer to have my 100,000 mile service performed. When I pulled in, the service mgr. saw paint chip and said that he believed there was a recall issued for paint problems on that year car. I was told to take the car to a repair shop owned by the dealer. They pressure washed the whole car, marked the panels, and told me that when they received the OK from the factory, the factory would call me. Later that week, the dealer called and set a date for the next Monday. I dropped it off and was told it would be ready the next week. They painted the panels that had the chipped paint, and called me. A week later, I picked up car, I had no problems and no bill."

    Anonymous A., FL (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"small rust spots on front, sides, and rear not caused by road debris but possibly poor paint job or caused during transit to dealer."

Anonymous, AB (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

"Noticed dragging sound on braking and especially while backing up. Occurred about a year ago. Mechanic replaced brake pads and rotors on rear (maybe calipers too). Problem was improper dragging on the brake pad surfaces. It may be happening again as I've noticed the dragging sound in the last two weeks. Have not taken it to the mechanic but will soon."

    Anonymous A., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Vibration occurred while traveling slowing vehicle down a long steep incline of 6 degrees or more."

Anonymous, ND (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Rotors

    "No specific problem"

    Anonymous A., MO (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, BC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    What Owners Say

    Keyless entry

Anonymous, LA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    "All doors would not open"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"The car battery died. The remote keyless entry will not work. The manual key fob did not work due to a piece inside the door so had to call a locksmith to unlock the car so we could pop the hood and Chang the battery. Only one keyless entry is not a good design. Part failure in door for manual fob is poor design."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Other electrical system problem

"Warning lights go off for tire pressurr"

    Anonymous, PA (2015 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The rear hatch will raise on it's own without the button being activated...and then it can be a problem trying to get it closed and secured. Local dealer says he has to see it happen to fix it so I guess he doesn't have an electronic diagnostic machine. It started about three years ago and does it periodically with no warning maybe once a month."

    Anonymous A., NC (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Head gasket

    Anonymous, IL (2015 Toyota Highlander 3.5-L V6)
    Other major engine problem

"There was an orange blob near the head gaskets when they went to replace the water pump. The first dealership (which was not a Toyota dealership), cleaned the head gasket area and to me to take it to a local Toyota dealership for repair. They could see the exact cause. After talking with the first dealership and Toyota's main center, they said it is normal to leak antifreeze and that I need to check the level at every oil change. They said the engine was ok and should be fine if I keep doing my oil changes regularly as I always do. There have not been any problems noticed since taking it in back around Nov/Dec. 2023."
