    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Toyota Highlander owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Master cylinder

"Brakes went "soft" and then completely gone in a few days. Took to dealer and it was a week before I got my car back."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Other brakes problem

"Over about a 2 week period this Spring, I noticed that the brake light on the dashboard would sporadically come on, and when the brakes were applied the car would continue to roll forward for another 12" or so. I had to press the brake pedal hard to get the vehicle to stop. I drove the vehicle to the Toyota dealer and it was able to confirm that the brake power was low and the brake light on the dashboard would come on. The Toyota dealer installed a new vacuum pump, and a new brake booster and master cylinder for the brake system. Toyota dealer also provided a loaner vehicle for me to use, while my vehicle was in their shop for a week to do those repairs. Total charges came to $3,485 including state tax. Fortunately, I had purchased a vehicle extended warranty policy with the Toyota dealer when I purchased the new vehicle in 2019, and that policy covered my costs 100%; I had no additional out-of-pocket expenses for these repairs."

Anonymous, NC (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
    Premature brake wear

"front inside brake pad totally worn causing noise and vibration. Service bulletin for brake vibration had expired and Toyota would not cover even though the milage was low."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"All 4 breaks needed to be replaced recently. I have 33k miles on car. The brakes were grinding. We have normal driving habits, we do not tow, live in a city, live in the mountains or push the brakes needlessly. The car made a noise every time we backed up, since it was new. A grinding type noise. But a few weeks ago the noise occurred every time we used the brakes. It became worse and the Toyota dealer said they were all worn out completely and it was odd. It was not covered by warranty."

    Anonymous A., WI (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes would not pass inspection after only 6000 miles"

Anonymous, ME (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Uneven wear. 2/32 one side 10/32 on the other side. Front."

Anonymous, PA (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    "After warranty expired"

Anonymous A., FL (2019 Toyota Highlander LE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
    Pulsation or vibration

"vibration and noise on driver front side. Front inside brake pad totally worn. Needed brake job at 27000 mile as service bulletin had expired and Toyota would not cover even with low milage."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Driving downhill in the mountains. I allowed the vehicle to reach excessive speed which then required many seconds of constant braking to decelerate. Immediately afterward the brakes gave a pulsing feel. Their performance never returned. The dealer found no concerns but due to my own concerns we decided to replace the pads and rotors, and service the brake line."

    Anonymous A., MO (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen goes blank

"goes blank for few seconds and resolves on its own"

Anonymous, MI (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Entire entertainment system failed and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, ON (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The Entune is no longer supported by Toyota and so app interfaces on the screen are no longer functional. iHeart can be run from phone but not built in screen. If I want to have it work as it was originally purchased to do so, I will need to replace the system"

    Anonymous, (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"the car drops calls, & the voice commands sometimes don't work. At times the car responds as if I am speaking in a foreign language and won't respond to commands. This problem began when I purchased a new I-phone 13 about 3 years ago. I had an i-phone 6 prior to that which worked fine in the car. I had a 2014 & 2016 Highlander which were fine with the I-phone 6. I went to the local Toyota dealer to try to get the new I-phone 13 to work, but they said it was not a Toyota problem, & my cell phone provider said it was not the phone. There is something incompatible in the pairing of the telephone and car and it's very annoying. It is not a minor problem in my opinion. I have just accepted the fact that my car/telephone is "possessed" Separately the two are fine but it is a match made in hell."

Anonymous, SC (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Toyota stopped pairing with either of our Apple phones. The dealership did a software update and it worked for one of our phones but not the 2nd one. A year later it still doesnt work on 2nd phone. The dealership couldnt get it to work either."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)
    Radio

"The entire radio system quit working shutting down everything that comes through the radio screen. Radio, backup, phone, navigation etc."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"Would make an extremely loud screeching noise through the stereo intermittently. May have been related to the SOS system. I did not renew the service after it expired in three years. I renewed the service and it has not occurred since. I was not interested in the service, but it was either renew or get rid of the car"

Anonymous, TX (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

    "Audio system failed"

Anonymous, LA (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Rear hatch opening Finally resolved after several checks at the dealership"

Anonymous, NC (2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum)

"replaced the rear door lift system through an independent mechanic"

Anonymous, VA (2019 Toyota Highlander LE)

"A message came up that we could not drive the car due to a brake system problem. We had the car towed to the Toyota dealership, which identified no problems with the brake system; however the car battery required replacement. It would have been much easier to deal with this problem if the correct message had been provided."

Anonymous, AB (2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel gauge/sender

"The fuel gauge sender failed and repair or replace in 2022 and dealer refused to repair or replace. I paid $900.00 to replace the sending unit. The fuel pump failed after the warranty replacement but was not honored by the dealer. I paid another $600.00 to replace it. The vehicle total down time was 8 days. This failure should have never happened at all."

    Anonymous A., FL (2019 Toyota Highlander SE 3.5-L V6)
    Fuel pump

    "Recall that was replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"The fuel pump was recalled and replaced in 2020. It failed again in 2022 and was past the warranty to be replaced. I paid for the replacement after I paid for the sending unit to be replaced. Total cost $2,000.00"

    Anonymous A., FL (2019 Toyota Highlander SE 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, NY (2019 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The rear hatch was intermittent. Sometimes it would open, sometimes not, sometimes it would close, sometimes not, often requiring it to be lifted or pulled down by hand which is not easy. The dealer replaced both struts, luckily under warranty a month before the warranty expired and it has worked fine since then."
