First Take

Toyota may be a newcomer to pure electric cars, but it has decades of experience with hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles. Its Mirai is an electric car, but it uses fuel-cell technology to produce electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, rather than store electricity in a large battery. The hydrogen interacts with oxygen from the outside air inside a stack of fuel cells and through a chemical reaction produces electricity. Water vapor is the only emission.

Model History
2021-
Current Generation

Redesigned for 2021, the Mirai fuel-cell vehicle became a larger, more powerful, and more luxurious five-passenger car that is based on a rear-wheel-drive Lexus platform. It's essentially an electric car that produces its power onboard without needing to be plugged in. It takes a few minutes to fill the Mirai's tanks with hydrogen, as opposed to hours of charging a typical electric car, but hydrogen stations are very scarce. The EPA's estimated range is 402-miles. The second-generation Mirai adds several safety and tech features. Its starting price is $49,500, about $9,000 less than the outgoing model. Buyers, or those who opt to lease, get $15,000 of complementary hydrogen fill-ups for three years. The Mirai was originally only offered for sale in California only.

2016-2020
2016 Redesign Year

The Mirai is the first hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicle available for consumers to own. It has a range of nearly 275 miles on a single fill-up of 5 kg of hydrogen (the energy equivalent of 5 gallons of gas). It takes only a few minutes to fill the tank as opposed to hours of charging an electric car. The Mirai is sold only in areas near existing or planned fueling stations on the U.S. coasts, but even so, these stations are few and far between. Acceleration from the 153-hp electric motor feels sluggish, but otherwise it feels like driving any other electric car. It's about the size of a Camry and seats four people. Handling is rather clumsy but still feels secure; the ride is comfortable and the cabin is quiet.
