    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2020 Toyota Prius Prime owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen freezes up

"A display screen problem occurred when starting the Prius and I cant remember what resolved it."

Anonymous, CA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Display screen goes blank

"A problem occurred with the electronic display system that I can not remember exactly what caused it."

Anonymous, CA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Hardware replacement

"The head unit would reboot periodically. Our local dealer determined that it needed replacement and got approval from Toyota to replace it under warranty. The first replacement also failed, but the second seems to have resolved the problem. My iPhone also suffered a failure of its charging port during the experience with the first bad head unit. This may have been caused by the bad head unit, since I typically kept it plugged in for Apple CarPlay access, but this is uncertain."

Anonymous A., WA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

""The guidance system does not adjust the map display, so you are driving up the screen. I have never been in or heard of a car like that. The verbal instructions have been accurate. There have apparently been no upgrades to fix the map-orientation problem. Note: There are small inserts for special requests that do orient the maps correctly. The problem seems restricted to the main map display. I've been driving since 1954, and so predate any sort of electronic display by a few decades. Even the earliest version of the map displays it oriented so that up on the map matched the direction the car was pointing. Our son discovered that if he used Apple AirPlay to send a "Waze" guidance system app to the display, the map orientation always had the car going up the screeen.""

Anonymous A., CA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Since owning the vechile dispay system reboots while care is in operation"

Anonymous, MA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"When plugged in I could hear the other party on a phone call but they could not hear me"

Anonymous A., CO (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Alignment

"I went in to replace a tire with damage to the sidewall - passenger's side rear. Discovered the passenger's side front was also damaged on the sidewall. Noticed the uneven wear between front and rear on each side."

Anonymous, CT (2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

""Nothing wrong with steering rack, but replacing the tie rod requires replacing steering rack $1500""

Anonymous A., NH (2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Tie rods

"Lower tie rod needs replacing. Unfortunately that requires also replacing the steering rack. $1500"

Anonymous A., NH (2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Tire wear is uneven

"I had gone too long without an alignment."

Anonymous, CT (2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"We lower and raise the back seats frequently. At one point my wife was in the back seat and found that neither side seat belt would pull out as it should. After taking it to the dealer and going back and forth with them it turned out that the seat belts would sometimes get caught in the catch mechanism and over time they both got cut. This was obviously a design problem so we talked our dealer into fixing it with no charge."

Anonymous, CA (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Under carriage cover kept coming down"

Anonymous, TX (2020 Toyota Prius Prime LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
