    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Toyota Prius V owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    CD player

"About a month ago I was changing the CD. The player wouldn't operate and it won't eject the CD. I also noted the CD app disappeared from the screen. The Pandora app also is no longer on the screen."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Display screen freezes up

"Not so much frozen as backlight being super bright as I would start the car. Would come back to normal after one or two minutes. Hasn't happened in a while now so I'm thinking it may be related to the Summer heat."

    Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Hardware replacement

"The head unit of the vehicle failed in place. I can listen to the radio, but the GPS, bluetooth, phone pairing are all non functional. Replacing the faulty head unit would cost over $1,000 by a Toyota dealer"

    Anonymous A., CO (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"There are no updates available for the navigation system (i.e., maps). Tried to fix multiple times, with new big dealerships. They simply say: "Sorry, northing available for the 2014 model." This is a serious problem and gets more serious as we drive in areas that have had any road changes in the past decade. Now, we just awkwardly use our phone. The navigation system that came with this car is a piece of junk."

    Anonymous A., NC (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The phone pairing button became in active, the dealer did a software update but that did not fix the problem. This is the statement I received from the manufacturer "We spoke with the Technical Expert and were informed the extension module is what houses the Bluetooth functionality in the 2014 Prius V. This extension module will need to be replaced to repair the Bluetooth operation. When we reached out to the Parts Distribution Center there are not showing any in stock across the country. The part is also over $1,000 in cost. The manufacturer would like to offer you up to $750 towards an aftermarket radio that includes Bluetooth technology of your choice. I have not found a reasonable replacement at this time."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"It started in the fall of 2023, occuring about 5 times a week. It was resolved mid March, 2024."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It just died. It was the original battery."

Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other electrical system problem

"Last year the gauge showing how much gas is used tells me the average gas used only."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Head gasket

"Check Engine light came on. Also a very rough vehicle shudder when the gas engine came on. Toyota dealer said head gasket failed - water was in the #1 cylinder. Toyota repaired the engine under warranty - California requires a 150,000 drive train warranty for this "PZE" (Partial Zero Emissions) vehicle. The car had approximately 136,000 miles on it."

    Anonymous A., CA (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Car would shake/engine knock once in a while when I'd start it. During one short road trip, white mist came through the vents, warning lights eventually came on. Head gasket needed work."

    Anonymous, (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other major engine problem

"Bucking that cannot be diagnosed by dealership."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    EV Battery

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"I left the interior lights on in the car and the battery died. I called AAA to jump it and the guy said that I needed a new battery - the one in the back of the car. So he replaced that. The battery under the hood apparently was fine and didn't need to be replaced."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Toyota Prius V 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"At around 130k, the ?inverter unit failed on a 2hr drive which sent us back home in limp mode (gas motor only). Stopped at a parts store for a free diagnostic and codes indicated this generator/inverter failure. Toyota dealer was very unhelpful. No consult with a Toyota mechanic :[ Called a used lot which does Priuses and got the code diagnosis. Had local mechanic put in used unit. Runs great now."

Anonymous, IA (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
