Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Other brakes problem

"was noticing some braking issues (loose, longer time to brake). surprised that it wasn't the brakes, but the brake actuator. got a second opinion and a lower price. the dealership wanted $3,200, but my independent garage asked $2,600. they were able to order the part and have it delivered straightaway, so I was only without a car for less than 3 days. there are some opinions on the internet that I should report this to NHTSA, but with 200,000 miles on the odometer at the time, I didn't think it was that out of the ordinary."

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"When we use the air conditioner, it often makes a constant clicking sound. Mechanics have said it is something to do with a "confused" computer. The only solution seems to be pushing the defroster button for the front of the car. This temporarily confuses the computer and will often stop the clicking sound. Very annoying and unable to make it go away permanently."

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"this was a surprise. one day i was doing errands, got back into the car, and the dashboard didn't light up. no MPH, no mileage, no way of knowing when the gas would run out (luckily, I only need gas every 2-3 weeks). i re-started the car several times, and drove it right to the repair garage. they couldn't re-create the problem, checked all the fuses, etc. the next time it happened, I couldn't lock the doors (didn't have that problem again). the dark dash happened about 5 times over 6 weeks, happening more often, and a couple times I had to press the "start" button for several seconds for the car to truly turn off. leaving the car while I was shopping or at night in the driveway seemed to re-set it back to normal. i used PriusChat and googled info, and found out about the "Combo meter" or instrument control cluster panel. most of the cost would be for time taking the dashboard & everything apart and putting it back together. i found several YouTube videos showing the whole process, and decided I could try it myself. the worst would be that it didn't work, or I would have to have it towed to a shop to put it back together. also, the annual insurance on the car is almost as much as the car is worth, so there is nothing to lose. i had already decided to try to take the car to 300,000 miles or more. or, buy a new Prius. so, I found CircuitBoardMedics.com (they fixed my dryer circuit board a few weeks ago), took the dash apart (it took 1.5 hours) on a Monday, sent in the instrument cluster, they fixed it, mailed it back to me, and I was able to re-install it then put the dash back together the next Monday. it worked! crossing my fingers."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
Nov 14, 2012
The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
What should you do:
Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
