EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Electric/hybrid battery pack cooling problem

"The cooling fan quit working well enough to cool the battery pack and All of the emergency lights came on. I drove the car to the nearest town and it was towed to a Toyota dealer for fan replacement. It took about five hours."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"The startup battery periodically goes dead. We have replaced it three or four times. Most times. It goes bad with time left on the warranty, so the substantial cost is pro-rated."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"All warnings lit up. The 2007 Prius was immediately driven the approximately 11 miles to the dealership and taken care of that day."

Anonymous, AR (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Vehicle completely unresponsive, standard mechanics could not diagnose or fix, had to have it towed and repaired at the dealership cost $4k (included new 12volt as well)"

Anonymous, FL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Started it and a big red sign showed up on my dashboard. I was told my battery needed to be replaced."

Anonymous A., MN (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Terry's Automotive replaced the $3000 electric battery with a 3 year warranty. The battery failed in three years and five months. Two of the small mini batteries within the three battery packs had gone bad. Terry's Automotive would not take the commission to fix the battery. They "no longer work on the Prius.""

Anonymous A., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Pack lasted as long as expected. Died on highway but car still drivable at low speed and got us home - about 30 miles as I recall. Cost was about $4500."

Anonymous, DE (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The dashboard on my 17 year old Prius suddenly lit up with 3 major warning lights; the red Master warning light, the yellow "hybrid system" warning light, and the orange "malfunction indicator". I dropped it off at the dealership, who said their diagnostic equipment indicated a Code #PO880 "early failure of the hybrid battery". Battery locks #5 and #8 were showing failure. The dealership initially quoted me an estimate of $4,348 to replace the hybrid battery ... but dropped it to $3,833 when I obtained a written quote from an independent garage. Since I probably could not have sold my Prius with a non-functioning hybrid battery, I told them to go ahead and replace it. I plan to keep this car, in hopes that the $3,800 battery replacement will be made up for by additional years of ownership. [Note: Toyota now provides a lifetime warranty for the engine, transmission, powertrain, and hybrid battery for all new vehicles purchased after the 2018 model year ]."

Anonymous, MI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The original battery came to the end of its useful life. We were going to replace the car, but it as less expensive to replace the battery. We bought it from Green Bean, which was half the price of Toyota, and offered a lifetime warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"actually it wasn't that much of a problem but it did happen - but it lived it's normal life. Car was 17 years old. Battery was due to die. Car was in interstate but gas motor got us to our destination 30 minutes later. Max speed was about 50, and zero acceleration, but it did the job."

Anonymous, DE (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Needed replacement"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The car stopped functioning when the hybrid battery died. We researched around and found Green Bean, an independent after-market refurbished battery replacement with a lifetime warranty which was affordable. They came to our house and did the replacement there. It was a very positive experience."

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Car had trouble starting and needed to replace the electric/hybrid battery pack"

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Just replaced the hybrid battery when it was needed no big deal."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"Wasnt a battery problem. Car began overheating needed radiator flush, radiator replacement and a new water pump"

Anonymous, FL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

What Owners Say

12V battery

"Battery was frequently completely drained, even after completely replacing the battery twice."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It started a year or two ago. I charge the battery, and it lasts a day or so. It says P lock or Park lock repair with Red Triangle. It has not yet been resolved."

Anonymous A., ME (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This 2007 Prius is a great trailer pulling passenger auto. Frame mount trailer hitch was installed by me. The electric OEM module is a trickle drain. The 12v batteries have been a problem. This Prius has 'eaten' three 12 volt...$200 batteries. The Prius is GREAT and worth the tendencies of electric demands. Placing a permanent charging connection when parked and adding a 12v battery off switch solves the 12v battery expense. The entrance must be by key, the clock is stopped and the radio presets are gone."

Anonymous A., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"My 12V battery died on my after 8 years of service. I had a very difficult time locating the right size for this 2007 Prius, everything about it takes oddball parts. I could not get anyone to install it for me, so I watched the YouTube videos that showed it being done in 6 minutes. It actually took me 6 hours of very difficult bending and stretching and undoing about 20 nuts and bolts before I could get the old battery out. Reinstalling the new one was not much easier."

Anonymous, NJ (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Gauges

"The dashboard lights just fail once in awhile, and then the car won't shut off! I've googled this, and there are workarounds that work. Sometimes after that the car won't start, another workaround and it does, with the dashboard lights back on. The mechanic has no idea what's causing this."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Headlights

"Headlights were replaced, which is pricy because the whole front end needs to come off. Then one went out again less than a year later. Mechanic replaced it at cost, and said it was a faulty bulb."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The OEM headlights on this car are HID. Driver side failed 2.5 years ago, the passenger side is very dim. I have ordered replacement bulbs several times, none of them fit. I've taken this to a half-dozen different mechanics and none of them want to work on it. The dealer asked for over $2000 to replace the lights. Another place wanted $1500 after mis-diagnosing the problem 3 times in a row. I was finally able to get the headlights upgraded to LED last week, only cost me $700. After 2.5 years and 20,000 miles of driving blind at night, I'm finally able to get my inspection renewed. Finally!!! Overall, everything on this 2007 Prius is difficult to service and parts are expensive and hard to find. I've owned 3 other Toyotas and I was happy with them, but I would not buy a Prius again. No more Hybrids, either. My next car will be all electric."

Anonymous, NJ (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Keyless entry

"I have been locked out several times from my Prius b/c the remote does not unlock my door. I change the battery in the remote and it goes dead very quickly without warning. I have been stranded several times."

Anonymous, MO (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Key no longer opens the car door"

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Other electrical system problem

"Engine coolant thermostat failed and had to be replaced."

Anonymous, MD (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Tire pressure monitor

"The tire pressure monitor stays on all the time. It needs to be replaced and is very expensive. I don't have the $$ to replace it. So as a safety feature, I have no idea when my tires are low in pressure. This replacement should not be costly."

Anonymous, MO (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This started a couple of years ago, the tire sensor going off and my checking the tires. I finlly ahd all the sensors replaced at a tire store, but they couldn't link up with the Toyota system so were useless. replacement sensors are toot expensive to replace, so we just (unhappily) live with it."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Tue catalytic converter failed and caused the check engine light. It had to be replaced."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Getting intermittent ODBII codes that the catalytic converter may be going bad."

Anonymous, OH (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Exhaust leaks

"This vehicle has an exhaust joint between the exhaust manifold and the rest of the exhaust system which tends to blow out it's "donut" gasket. I've had to replace that gasket which is hard to get at since it's buried quite low behind the engine. If it's not replaced, the car becomes quite noisy (although the passenger compartment is fairly well insulated from the sound) and the ventilation system draws in exhaust fumes which flood the passenger compartment at idle and up to about 30 MPH whenever the engine is running. If a person were to get stranded in very cold weather and used the car to stay warm, I suspect this could be deadly."

Anonymous, MN (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Other/unsure

"had to replace hybrid battery water pump"

Anonymous, HI (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Mechanic couldn't diagnose it. Loss of power. Hybrid battery may have needed more use as when we started to drive it more, the problems went away. It does definitely need a tune-up since it hasn't had one since we bought it in 2015, 50K miles and 8.5 years ago."

Anonymous, VT (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Since mid-2020, when the car is in park, it rolls unless the emergency brake is engaged"

Anonymous, MA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"TPMS system has failed. Warning light is on all the time even though tire pressure is not low on any tires."

Anonymous, MA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Suspension needed service do to routine use."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"No problems first 100,000 miles. then 3: Hybrid Inverter went bad at 100,000 mi replaced with used one $1200 HY battery went bad at 125,000. replaced it myself with new cells from Toyota.$3000 great sale at time. Great utube video. I replaced a 2nd HV battery in brothers Prius Throws an engine code that cat converter is out of spec/oxygen sensor bad. A known problem for high mileage Prius cars. Torque News had the answer. A special cleaner from a company in Iowa or Kansas that cleans the pistons. Some dealers offer it as a premium treatment, otherwise only available on line. I bought it online. seems to work for 3 years(3 cans) but not anymore. I was lucky to pass smog 4 months ago. Not sure what I'll do next time. maybe an O2 sensor is bad. In general a reliable vehicle. Wife also has a 07 Prius with 150,000 miles. Never ever had any problem until last week when the inverter coolant pump failed. Towed to our dealer."

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"THE hybrid battery needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"Although this is a sporadically reoccurring problem. But I am able to fix it with the help of on line instructions"

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I think this may be related to the other electrical problems, but not sure. It started the same time. It is not resolved."

Anonymous A., ME (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The dashboard and display screen both flicker, and seem especially dim when the headlights are on. It's an electrical problem, but the time and cost to even diagnose it seem prohibitive. We're going to just live with it until it fails completely."

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Hardware replacement

"Im away from home on a trip so I dont have the specific info available. The screen was not displaying correctly so I had it replaced."

Anonymous, OR (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Mapping system went blank about a year ago. Rest of console works fine. Was told nav system is no longer supported. The car is old, but not that old."

Anonymous, KY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"trim piece that includes hath release mechanism and handle broke. I glued it back in place because of the cost to replace, but without that hatch would not be usable."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The clear coat has peeled off several areas. First was the rear spoiler(?), then one by one the door handles. When still under warranty, the paint on the hood started getting small chips. They weren't caused by poor roads or debris as it was still nearly new. I believe just a very poor quality paint. I have seen another red Prius with the same peeling top coat."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Roof finish coat is peeling/flaking. Started about a year ago. Have not yet taken it to get it fixed."

Anonymous, KY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When I purchased the car, I had a protective coating applied to the exterior. It didn't stand up well to the sun...living in Phoenix is a killer. Paint and coating continue to peel. The car looks horrible, but it runs well."

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Rust

"Not much to say. The car is staring to get rusty, but it's 17 years old in Upstate NY. I'm not complaining."

Anonymous A., NY (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"Needed replacement due to wear, age. Problem found during regular maintenance."

Anonymous, MA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Worn shocks and struts caused snowball of damage to other suspension components and have resulted in costly repairs. This was discovered only recently by new mechanics after moving to a new city. Dealership apparently did not fix the deeper problems with shocks that led to premature wear on several components."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Springs or torsion bars

"The rear shocks were fine. No problem. One of the springs were broken, so I replaced both rear strut assemblies."

Anonymous A., NY (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water would leak into the hatch area. It was somehow coming down the side hatch channel and running out the hatch area light fixture. Other Prius owners have had this issue also."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Other noises & leaks problem

"I was told that the gasket is leaking for the engine coolant - leading to a master warning light and high engine temp light. The oil and coolant are mixing and there is a constant loss of coolant. I was informed that the car has 6 months to 3 years left of life before the coolant issue leads to destruction of the motor."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Other driveline problem

"The front left wheel drive started making a "rubbing whine" at 55mph which comes and goes. When we took it to the Toyota dealer, we were advised that the drive train was a sealed unit, and we could either replace the whole unit, or wait for the noise to get worse. We're waiting for the noise to get worse, but it seems to be getting less noisy (or I'm getting used to it, or I'm going deaf, or any and all of the above!). We drove across country twice since January 2023. At times the noise was mildly bothersome, at other times, no noise at all. We're living with it, but know that if we were to try to sell the car, it would be an issue."

Anonymous, NC (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

/ 5

What Owners Say

Refrigerant leaks

"Had the refrigerant filled twice before they ran a diagnostic and found a leak. Cost to fix was prohibitive, so declined."

Anonymous A., NC (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
