EV Battery
Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.
What Owners Say
"The startup battery periodically goes dead. We have replaced it three or four times. Most times. It goes bad with time left on the warranty, so the substantial cost is pro-rated."
Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"All warnings lit up. The 2007 Prius was immediately driven the approximately 11 miles to the dealership and taken care of that day."
Anonymous, AR (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"Vehicle completely unresponsive, standard mechanics could not diagnose or fix, had to have it towed and repaired at the dealership cost $4k (included new 12volt as well)"
Anonymous, FL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"Started it and a big red sign showed up on my dashboard. I was told my battery needed to be replaced."
Anonymous A., MN (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"Terry's Automotive replaced the $3000 electric battery with a 3 year warranty. The battery failed in three years and five months. Two of the small mini batteries within the three battery packs had gone bad. Terry's Automotive would not take the commission to fix the battery. They "no longer work on the Prius.""
Anonymous A., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"Pack lasted as long as expected. Died on highway but car still drivable at low speed and got us home - about 30 miles as I recall. Cost was about $4500."
Anonymous, DE (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"The dashboard on my 17 year old Prius suddenly lit up with 3 major warning lights; the red Master warning light, the yellow "hybrid system" warning light, and the orange "malfunction indicator". I dropped it off at the dealership, who said their diagnostic equipment indicated a Code #PO880 "early failure of the hybrid battery". Battery locks #5 and #8 were showing failure. The dealership initially quoted me an estimate of $4,348 to replace the hybrid battery ... but dropped it to $3,833 when I obtained a written quote from an independent garage. Since I probably could not have sold my Prius with a non-functioning hybrid battery, I told them to go ahead and replace it. I plan to keep this car, in hopes that the $3,800 battery replacement will be made up for by additional years of ownership. [Note: Toyota now provides a lifetime warranty for the engine, transmission, powertrain, and hybrid battery for all new vehicles purchased after the 2018 model year ]."
Anonymous, MI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"The original battery came to the end of its useful life. We were going to replace the car, but it as less expensive to replace the battery. We bought it from Green Bean, which was half the price of Toyota, and offered a lifetime warranty."
Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"actually it wasn't that much of a problem but it did happen - but it lived it's normal life. Car was 17 years old. Battery was due to die. Car was in interstate but gas motor got us to our destination 30 minutes later. Max speed was about 50, and zero acceleration, but it did the job."
Anonymous, DE (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"Needed replacement"
Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)"The car stopped functioning when the hybrid battery died. We researched around and found Green Bean, an independent after-market refurbished battery replacement with a lifetime warranty which was affordable. They came to our house and did the replacement there. It was a very positive experience."
