    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Backup or other camera/sensors

    "Unusable, blurry display."

Anonymous A., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Backup camera unavailable when screen stopped working. New screen included new camera with updated functionality (guidelines and better view)."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Display screen freezes up

"Screen was freezing or going blank every few weeks. Finally had to have it repaired/replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Several times, the display screen partially froze up meaning that part of it was visible, but not the rest. Eventually, each time the problem went away. But, I suppose, it may happen again. Luckily, it didn't last too long.""

Anonymous, OR (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Display screen goes blank

""The touch-screen display no longer responds to touch. I have to use the corresponding control on the steering wheel to adjust fan, A/C, defrost, volume, audio mode, etc.. In fact, the display will randomly react as if the screen has been touched which means I always keep the display on an Info screen which prevents the gremlins from changing navigation map, volume, radio station, etc. Toyota wants over $2k to fix the issue which is more than the car is worth at this point. I will keep pushing buttons on the wheel.""

Anonymous A., (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Experienced over a period of several months. Required capacitor replacement"

Anonymous, HI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""The scree for gas consumption, temperature goes black and does not come on by itself but we can get it to by looking at other items on it on the dash""

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The dash display screen goes blank for long stretches of time - weeks at a time. The cost to replace it is $4000 and I choose to live with it."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Combination meter" went bad and had to be replaced for $1500"

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""I think I experienced this a 10 years after I got my car. I had to get a new display, and even then it wasn't working very well.""

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Intermittent blank status with the dashboard . Annoying, but it corrects itself. It started about 165000 miles. Still not resolved."

Anonymous A., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Periodically the screen goes totally blank. It may last one day or several days. Then it starts to work again. Known problem."

Anonymous, KS (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"As mentioned before, the unit that controls the display screen needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The lcd display on the dash is on its last leg. The display is dim because its failing not because its set too dim. It affects my ability to easily use many functions including the backup camera"

Anonymous A., FL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Control screen board goes out occasionally and no idea about speed, gas levels, radio stations and door will not lock"

Anonymous, (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Hardware replacement

"Display screen went blank. Needed to have the piece of equipment that controls the screen replaced."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Screen stopped working. Starts haphazardly in specific spots and then totally failed. No backup camera or AC and sound system control except what could be controlled from steering wheel buttons. Toyota no longer makes the part so purchased aftermarket screen. Only partial functionality (radio and some AC control) restored because didnt want to spend an additional $1000 to purchase a motherboard. New system allows for Apple CarPlay, which previous system was too old to have.""

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Heads-up display

"I'm actually not sure what you mean by the heads-up display. I was referring to the screen that allows me to control various items which I commented on earlier"

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other in-car electronics problem

""dashboard sometimes doesn't light up on start, even though the engine starts. a dealer repair shop couldn't find the problem. an independent repair shop said there was a bad capacitor on the circuit board controlling the dashboard lights, but they couldn't find a replacement part. luckily, the problem only happens about once a month, and it clears up after turning the car off and starting again.""

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Initially it was intermittent. Now it's permanent. The touch screen does not work. This means I cannot control climate, the audio system, pairing my phone, resetting the odometer etc. From the touch screen, I have to use the available buttons on the steering column and some items can't be controlled that way. I was told it would cost close to $1,000 to replace that unit and I haven't felt like spending that money"

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"After replacing the screen system,I could not link my cell 0hone. I bought a third party system to connect. That worked, but then i think I figured out how to connect and no longer need the third party device"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""The performance of the main Video Console has been compromised by moist weather conditions ever since the car had a "gentle" side impact in October 2021. During these conditions, the Smart Key function also fails. After several days of DRY WEATHER, the performance is normal. However, the Bluetooth has not always worked well with my older model iPhone. This connection problem existed Prior to the impact described above.""

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

    "Replaced"

Anonymous A., WI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"2023 installed new 12 volt battery. Needed to replace again in 2024"

Anonymous, (2007 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Electrical system is starting to fail at times causing 12V battery to die. Heck the car is 18+ years old with 200000+ miles. We have learned to turn off headlights, not use the 12v outlet s to power cellphones etc. Basically we are led to believe it would be too costly to troubleshoot & fix. But we love this car so we keep it going as best we can.""

Anonymous A., PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It was expected considering how many miles are on the car."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I think I left an interior light on when I left the car parked for 4 days. When I returned the car was dead. It took me some figuring out to get the car started and all repercussions of the problem solved. Would have been helpful to have a warning light or other information system to figure this out quicker."

Anonymous, GA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"About 7 years ago it just started going on and off on its own."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Headlights

"High beams would turn off. Ordered new lights online and replaced."

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"We have replaced both headlights so we can better see at night. It made a big difference"

Anonymous A., PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""As an older owner, remembering how simple it was in prior years to replace a headlight, it is irritating that Toyota has contrived to make it so difficult to replace the little light element that you have to go to the dealer to replace it. Another designed-in complication that seems to have been created to force you to resort to a Toyota dealer for a replacement that should be capable of owner-replacement.""

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Keyless entry

""just after 220,000 good miles, the hybrid drive battery signaled failure, and made dying noises. Local Toyota dealer is dishonest and suggested several expensive things in addition to replacing the battery pack. Local independent mechanic agreed to install a new Toyota-brand battery pack for $3,800, which was only $200 less, but without all the other suggested items. He did the job in one day, and the car again works fine, with miles-per-gallon figures just about as good as when the car was new. I think it was a good decision to replace this battery, rather than shop for another car. The keyless entry system seems to have been intentionally designed to be a difficult profit-maker for Toyota, which charges way too much. so went to aftermarket, took about two hours and $600. I like Toyota, but this is an obnoxious practice, to make it so expensive. I tried to buy the car without keyless entry, but the whole Mid-Atlantic dealership chose to only order cars with keyless entry system, at customer nuisance and expense.""

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Rear lock needed replacement, was draining battery""

Anonymous A., WI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other electrical system problem

""It appears there is a wiring corrosion problem, the warning light says the parking lock isnt working, but it is working fine""

Anonymous A., ME (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Tire pressure monitor

"Battery to one tire pressure monitor was dead and the other 3 were very low. I could have skipped repair but decided to replace all 4."

Anonymous A., OH (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The sensor is bad, constantly on so I have to continually check my tire pressure. The part is expensive so its an inconvenience Im willing to live with"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Warning lights

"Warning lights came on for the battery. Tested each cell ordered 2 online and replaced for less than 40 dollars."

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"Prius was only running on gas. Hybrid engine replaced for $4700."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""The hybrid battery needed replacement. Since we have put close to 120,000 miles on the car and owned it for 18 years, we did not consider this surprising.""

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Battery had to be replaced due to failure. I don't know if that was serious because it happened after only 150,000 miles (this model boasted failure-free to 300,000) or acceptable because it worked for 18 years. Maybe it just died of old age. I didn't hesitate to replace it because I won't be driving it for anything close to either limit. This will be my last car unless more modern safety features enable me to keep driving safely despite my age. I sure see a lot of these first-or second-generation Priuses around!"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Just this week, the ORIGINAL traction battery failed. We knew the battery wouldnt last forever but it lasted much longer than expected (like 40-50K miles more). Have replaced one 12V battery, had some Issues with battery cooling system, and the dashboard (failing after recall expired - which was BS that Toyota wouldnt cover it for life of vehicle)"

Anonymous, MD (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The car indicated a serious drivetrain problem. We had noticed the hybrid battery charge meter indicating it wasn't holding charge well overnight. Our mechanic said replacement was needed."

Anonymous, MD (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The RED triangle of death showed up on my screen and noticed the Prius not running right when going past 45mph. Took car to dealership for diagnosis and they said one of the battery cells is bad. GOT A VERY HIGH estimate to replace the hybrid battery. Researched and found GREENBEAN battery would come to my house and replace for about $1700(reconditioned) vs more than double the price at the dealership for a new one. Warranty is less but on a very old vehicle went this route. (glad I did)"

Anonymous, MI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It was expected considering how many miles are on the car."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Refrigerant leaks

""The A/C coolant has been replaced 3 times since around 2015(?). Each time the coolant lasted less that Two years. There must be a small leak, but at the current age of the car, I doubt if the repair costs are worth it. I am likely to have it "recharged" one more time later this year. I can inform you if or when I get the leak repaired (those who recharge it don't seem to notice the leak because it is so slow).""

Anonymous A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other brakes problem

"The brake actuator failed and was never replaced byyy by the original owner who had meticulously serviced the vehicle. This part was part of a recall, and SHOULD have been repaired. It was a hefty $3000 to fix"

Anonymous A., MO (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other body problem

""The engine splash shield came loose and my local garage attempted to fix it. It came loose again and required a 1,300 dollar repair. This is a vulnerable part of the car.""

Anonymous, CT (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other steering/suspension problem

"AT ABOUT 17 YRS OLD, I'D HEAR CLUNKING ON ROUGH ROADDS. THAT STOPPED WHEN THEY SWAY BARS WERE REPLACED."

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Shocks or struts

""At 154000 miles I had our Toyota dealer replace all the struts (& shocks), which were the original parts from when the car was new. Unfortunately, at the 205000 service, the dealer said that the front shocks were leaking and would need to be replaced. For the 210000 mile service, I asked them to replace the front struts, shocks & springs (the springs had never been replaced). Plus any other worn-out parts that could be accessed when the struts were off. The dealer told me that all CV joints (inner & outer) were leaking badly & recommended replacing them, which also meant replacing the axles that the CV joints are attached to. I requested that they use only original Toyota parts, since we intend to keep our Prius to 300000 miles. They also found that the tire-pressure-monitors were non-working or nearly about to fail--cost to replace was around $800. The total cost for all work done was $5,100. Investing this much money in a 2007 car made sense only since we do intend to keep the car to 300000 or more miles. It also makes sense since the major components of the car--especially the engine and hydrid electric motor drive components & large hybrid battery--are still working flawlessly. For example, the engine uses no more than 1/4 quart of oil during the 5000 miles between recommended oil changes. We briefly considered a new Prius, but frankly find the newest model too low to the ground for seating comfort. We greatly prefer the upright seating of our Prius and the ease of getting in & out of it. And our Prius is far more comfortable than the new Corolla Cross hybrid that we tried when the dealer loaned it to us while our Prius was being worked on.""

    What Owners Say

    Other emissions/fuel system problem

""Toyota hybrids have a coolant transfer pump to dump hot coolant from a thermos into the cooling system for a faster warmup. The car works fine with a broken pump, but needed to be fixed to pass smog, as it's considered part of the emissions systems. We used it broken for about 6 months with the check engine light coming and going, but new we needed it repaired this year for the bi-annual smog check, so we finally replaced the pump.""

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
    Nov 14, 2012
The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
