Anonymous, AZ (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Display screen goes blank

"Happened 2-3 times in the last couple of years. Found solution on YouTube"

Anonymous, HI (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Probably a combination meter going bad. Started about 30 months ago. Happens off and on - maybe a total of 7 or 8 times. Common problem in this model year. Search internet for blank display. Will cost probably at least $1000 for dealer to fix. For the mechanically minded you can buy refurbished combo meters to install yourself but it requires major do-it-yourself skills; too much for me. Issue also sometimes prevents car from shutting off. Issue can be fixed temporarily with a weird song-and-dance of opening driver's door and pushing a sequence of buttons. Will be selling car soon."

Anonymous, GA (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"2023 started. i just start & turned off engine several times to have it back on"

    Heads-up display

"The icon that tells you your tire is low or flat is on constantly without tire issues. Was told new sensors at $80/tire would fix it but I rely on self inspection of the tire."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Mannet, the mechanics stated that this is normal for this age of a car that the computers let's start to fail. And apparently yeah, that's why we only have the one screen that we can see now. Car still runs well despite the age and the rattles and the computer issue. It is now being used basically for a four mile daily commute and just to go around town"

Anonymous, (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"The Prius, which had been running without any problems at all, stopped dead in the street and I couldnt get it to shift into gear. I had to get it towed. The dealer identified the problem but I had another shop fix it. They came out and fixed it on site for less than half the dealers price with a refurbished battery with a 3-year warranty."

Anonymous A., FL (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Red triangle of death came on. Scan code indicated hybrid battery degradation."

Anonymous A., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Anonymous A., NC (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The 2008 Toyota Prius hybrid battery needed to be replaced for a second time. The first replacement was not a good battery. The 2008 Toyota Prius mileage was well over 150,000 miles driven before the original hybrid battery needed to be replaced for the first time in late 2022 or 2023."

Anonymous, WV (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel gauge/sender

""For the past 20 months, the fuel gage cannot be trusted when it moves lower than half a tank. At times the low fuel alarm has sounded when I had only used 3 gallons of gas. More typically, I just don't trust the guage, and add gas when I've used 4-5 gallons. With my new problem with adding gas to the tank, the mechanic doesn't want to work on a full tank, so I've only been adding a few gallons at a time. These small additions do not move the gas guage at all. After just adding 3.3 gallons, the guage remained at one dot. Since I can't rely on the gas guage, I must depend on the trip display monitor with miles driven and mpg to figure out when to add gas.""

Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other emissions/fuel system problem

""As mentioned, the small leak in the gas tank caused the check engine light to come on. Eventually Toyota staff said I needed a new gas tank which was a large expense over $5,000. I'm not sure what category the throttle problem would fall under but the car wasn't getting enough air and stalled once.""

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Other body problem

"The sun visors have failed. They will not stay in place, either in the up position or down position. They hit my head when I enter the car and dont do any good when I need them to block the sun."

Anonymous A., CA (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Several years ago the plastic cover to the rear hatchback latch started disintegrating. As a result it melted into the latch mechanism and the hatchback would not open sometimes. Apparently it was a common problem for Prius but there was never a recall to my knowledge. Toyota quoted me approx $900 to fix."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Windows

"We can no longer control the rear passenger side window. We have not had it fixed because it's too expensive for the age of the car and we rarely carry passengers in the back seat."

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Problem(s) fueling the tank

""For the past month the auto shut off of gas nozzle shuts off immediately when trying to add gasoline. It seems that the flow into the gas tank is restricted. To add gas need to pull the nozzle almost all the way out, and add gas slowly. My mechanic has ruled out a gas tank problem. Waiting for arrival of the accessory parts that attach to the delivery tube to see if replacing them fixes the problem.""

Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    Recalls
    PROVIDED BY
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
    Nov 14, 2012
The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

    STEERING
    Nov 14, 2012
Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
    For more information:

A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
    Summary:
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
    What should you do:
TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
