    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

""The catalytic converter is a popular item for theft. This is the third time mine has been taken or attempted to be taken. When I last had the problem, I was convinced to put a "cage" around it. The cage prevented the actual theft, but not damage. I needed to replace it anyway. Because my car has over 100,000 miles, insurance would only cover used parts & Toyota would only install new parts. This made the cost of replacement extremely high but necessary.""

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"the catalytic converter was stolen in a public garage. Toyota did a good job of repairing and adding a shield. I should have added the shield years ago !"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Straightforward. Catalytic converter went bad and had it replaced for a reasonable price."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Exhaust manifold

""The car failed its emissions testing in 2022 with an estimated repair cost of $600+. Shortly after that, the manifold developed problems and now makes a very loud noise when the engine is running.""

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"My horn stopped working. My local mechanic couldnt fix it. At the dealership I learned that the horn failure also resulted in the airbags becoming unable to deploy. It took one day to fix the faulty component was located in the steering wheel but I was not amused that I drove a car for several days with no functioning airbags."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Needed to have the front to back brake lines replaced. Rocker panels have bad rust; a water valve failed"

Anonymous, ME (2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Prius had starting issues, several times, for my wife. And once for me. Finally wouldnt start for her at all. Turned out to be a simple fix, replacing the small battery that controls the electronics and cleaning the battery terminals. So not actually a very serious problem, regular maintenance.""

Anonymous, (2009 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Water pump bearing failed. Made a worrying noise. Prius is in the shop right now getting a new water pump. Expensive, but at 171,200 hardly surprising. It also recently needed new plugs, air filters, and such.""

If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
    Summary:
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
    What should you do:
Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
    Nov 14, 2012
The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

    STEERING
    Nov 14, 2012
Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
    Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
