    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

"Causes check engine light to come on often, dealer says eventually will need to be replaced but not critical."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other/unsure

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I can no longer update the GPS system. Toyota makes this decision. Ive called the manufacturer of the system and spoken with Toyota. The vehicle is too old to update this. If I want it updated, I need to purchase an aftermarket system or I assume have Toyota install a new navigation system. This information was provided to me a couple years ago when I asked to update the system. I was given no notice that Toyota was ending this update option."

Anonymous, NE (2013 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"tire pressure sensors - recent/not yet fixed - needs new wire harness and sensors"

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen goes blank

"Display screen kept fading and so finally I took it several times to the Toyota dealer and they said it would be 2000 bucks to replace but they told me privately if you go to Best Buy itll be cheaper or like 500 bucks so we went to Best Buy and spent 700 bucks to replace the entire unit or the new Sony system so we blame Toyota for a lousy system"

Anonymous A., WA (2013 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Over the past couple of years, the ability to pair a phone with the system has failed and the display screen is all washed out for the first few minutes when starting up."

Anonymous A., MI (2013 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Hardware replacement

"Best Buy took a long time and had trouble getting parts and needed multiple trips to Best Buy and waiting for hours and didnt explain how to use the new software so its a mixed bag"

Anonymous A., WA (2013 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Initially, after cold start, the display used by GPS and backup camera (among other things) displays MPG bars in reverse image for 1-5 minutes, then reverts to normal graphics. Lately, the front window defroster (in same unit) cannot be turned off (will check web for any similar issue). Will attempt to work around this by driving in the early part of day during warm weather months."

Anonymous A., OH (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This summer the screen started to turn from normal function to inverted colors (white with grey text) on start up. At first for less than a minute before correcting itself, then a few minutes and now for 15 or more minutes. Once it corrects itself if usually is ok for the rest of the ride. Adjusting the brightness or restarting the car not fix the issue. It still remains clickable but it seems that it is getting harder to read and use during these times. I have not attempted to get it fixed yet"

Anonymous A., NJ (2013 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

    "Unable to pair"

Anonymous A., NY (2013 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

"Head cracks when the head gasket blows. Common problem with this year but Toyota does not give any help to repair"

Anonymous, KY (2013 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Head gasket

"On August 7th,2023, I had to have my Prius towed to the dealership because the engine shook and rattled the entire vehicle. This happened without any warning. No warning icons on the dash. The engine oil and coolant were both within normal limits. Odometer reading was 122103 miles as noted by the Toyota repair shop. Repair shop put in a new head gasket. Total bill was $5354.36. They also said the AC compressor was not working. (It had been working before this head gasket issue.) I took the Prius in again on April 8, 2024 because the engine was knocking at a cold start. The same shop then charged $388.50 to diagnose scored cylinder walls and recommended an engine replacement for $8000. The mileage at that point was 128850. I refused their solution. I believe that the Toyota repair shop did shoddy work on the initial engine problem, did not stand behind their work. My previous car was an early 1990's Nissan Sentra that had over 220,000 miles on it before the transmission had major problems. That's when I junked it and bought the 2013 Prius, new. Up until the engine issue, I had nothing but praise for the car and for Toyota. I had all of the required maintenance done on this vehicle at the Toyota dealership and have all the documentation. I will never buy another Prius. I will never buy another Toyota. That is how upset I am. I live in a rural with no public transportation. I am a widowed senior citizen, living on a small fixed income. This Prius is my only vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Engine head gasket blew. Cost as much to repair as putting a used engine.Common problem with this year engine but Toyota will not fix as a recall"

Anonymous, KY (2013 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I Checked engine pressure at yearly tuneups because I knew a head gasket replacement was a common issue for this model. When I had some codes pop up and had it checked, it needed it so I had it done, $4,000."

Anonymous A., CA (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Blown head gasket. Head was not warped. Told by the dealerships Prius mechanic that it is not uncommon and that they blow around 100K miles. We have some indications that head gasket had been replaced by the dealer we bought it from, just before we bought it in 2017 with 112000 miles on it."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The generation 3 Prius has a known defect in the cooling of the engine block where the head gasket is almost guaranteed to fail between 150,000 miles and 250,000 miles. This issue was corrected in the generation 4 with heat sinks built into the block. Mine failed at250,000. Rebuilt the cylinder head and a new gasket or $5,000"

Anonymous A., OH (2013 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel injection system

"Started 8.Aug.2023. Check engine light (P0301). Dealer replaced spark plugs, swapped #1 and #3 coil packs. Dealer said possibly a dirty or sticking valve. Wanted to disassemble engine for $4000 (declined). Light stayed out for 1 month, then came back on (P0301). Took it to one of the local Firestone/Grismer location, which did a 3-step decarbonization. CEL stayed out for 6 months. Took it to an independent mechanic. Mechanic removed intake manifold and found buildup on cylinder #1, said it may be due to bad spray pattern. Mechanic added a can of BG 44K Platinum, and gave instructions for 2 additional cans. Said injector may need to be replaced. Seems to run somewhat better, check engine light either was not reset or came back on. Will monitor until after treatment with third can. Not as bad as before, but still some hesitation after engine cools for 5-15 minutes. May not be as noticeable on hybrid, since a good deal of torque is being supplied by electric motors. CEL, when illuminated, is solid, has never flashed."

Anonymous A., OH (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, water pump, thermostat, antifreeze leaks, overheating.

    What Owners Say

    Water pump

"water pump failed leading the hybrid system to disengage. was able to drive the prius on "engine only." problem began with engine stress on very hot day in high elevation (smokey mountains) area. after letting the car cool off, was able to drive WITH hybrid system functioning but AC off to relieve load being placed on system. after coming back to Illinois, the problem would resurface intermittently. after water pump was replaced the problem did not happen again."

    What Owners Say

    Engine knock or ping

"Car shook and had hiccups in the acceleration. There were 2 ignition coils and fuel injectors that were replaced. In the end it seemed it may have been a problem with spark plugs that on visual inspection appeared to be fine, but in actuality were the problem."

Initially diagnosed as short in A/C compressor and This was replaced. However the problems continued and they eventually figured out it was some small (but very expensive!) switch was defective and that fixed the problem. Repairs completed in early February 2023. Cost of repairs over $7,000."
