"The screen popped up with maintenance needed, bring to dealer. As the car had just past 50,000 miles, I thought it was Toyota trying to get me into their shop, and ignored it. I do not use the dealer. I have an excellent mechanic. Then I was driving down the road on Friday and a little red thermometer showed up. I called my mechanic. He said to check the oil. I did, after the car sat for a while, and it was full. So I looked at all the fluids and there was one tank that was nearly empty. All I could see was a little pink near the bottom. It is surprising that the little red light showed up So late. Youd think that it would be set to showed up before almost empty. So I put water in and drove to my mechanic, 30 miles away. By the time I got there all the water Id added was gone. My mechanic put his finger in the exhaust pipe and it came out wet. My model of Prius has a heat exchanger in the exhaust system, and Toyota came out with a bulletin saying that they had failed in particular models. Repair was covered by Toyota to 80,000 miles. This is my third Prius. I love Priuses. The local dealer said that yes, it was a warranty fix and they would do it. I was told me the wait time on the part 2 1/2 months. The car is not drivable. What am I supposed to do? Im a widow: I cant borrow my husbands car. Their answer: to buy another car and then sell it . My mechanic said there were workarounds on the internet. So he did a workaround. I had to wait from for a short hose to be shipped. And now Im driving my car, waiting for the part from Toyota. Frankly, after this experience, I dont have a great desire to buy another Toyota. They have excellent engineers. The Toyota dealer couldve offered to do a workaround for the failed part. But no, buy another car. Another beef I have about my Toyota Prius is that the ground clearance is so low that I shattered part of the front bumper pulling a U-turn and hitting a curb. My other two Toyota Priuses didnt have this problem. Of the 3 Priuses Ive had, the best was the Gen 2."
