"The empty tank sensor goes on when there is nearly 3 gallons left in the tank. This appears to be a known and wide problem with the 2024 Prius. The owners manual states that this car has a 10.6 gallon tank, but Toyota is saying it is now 10.5. When contacted, they indicated that they believe this is "expected behavior" and are warning the driver so that they don't run out of gas. 2.0 gallons missing on 10.6 is 24.8% of the gas tank that is inaccessible. Toyota advertised 567 mile range on that car and we are only getting 358 miles per tank. On the owner's message boards, I am hearing from other owners that are willing to drive the car 90 miles past empty. Toyota says that they car needs the gas to "keep the fuel pump cool", but that safety precaution is never mentioned on the web site, in the owner's manual, and my dealer knew nothing about it. With nearly 25% of the tank unusable, I believe that Toyota has made an error with their gauge and is unwilling to acknowledge the problem. This is an area where public pressure may be necessary to push Toyota into fixing the problem."
