    Road Test

Our top-rated small SUV, the RAV4 is available only as a four-door, the current version manages to be a little roomier than its forebear without being much larger outside. The RAV4's flexible, well-laid-out interior includes a rear seat that lets you fold and remove each half. There's still no V6, but the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine picked up a much-needed 20-hp boost, and now provides adequate performance. The engine and automatic transmission work well together, and the all-wheel-drive system does its job efficiently and unobtrusively. Access and loading are very easy. Nimble handling, excellent brakes, and good fuel economy also add to the RAV4's appeal. One caveat: The RAV4 lacks a rear bumper, so even minor rear impacts could require expensive repairs.
