The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2021 Toyota Sienna owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"Van stopped working after backing out of a of a parking space at Walmart. Van blocked parking lot traffic for 1 hour while waiting for AAA. AAA jump started the van, and Toyota replaced the battery the same day. This is the second time within 2 years the battery died and prevented thr van from starting. The 12v starter battery is too small. I learned from forums that you cannot leave van on ACC mode, as the battery drains too fast and doesnt get back to full charge. Some on the forums have gone for larger batteries; I will be looking for a larger battery that fits in that small space (or different chemical composition ) when this battery dies again. For $50K van, I wish Toyota put in more robust 12v starter batteries."

Anonymous A., ME (2021 Toyota Sienna Platinum 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The problem began shortly after taking delivery and has continued the entire life of the vehicle. Multiple toyota dealer service departments have failed to offer any resolution. Car would not start on multiple attempts and finally would start or require a boost. Vehicle was even towed to dealership and they could not find anything wrong."

Anonymous, TX (2021 Toyota Sienna Platinum 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Keyless entry

"After replacing the battery we bought on Amazon, we often had to re-seat it have it work. The problem fixed itself after we bought a much more expensive battery from Toyota."

Anonymous, MD (2021 Toyota Sienna Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other electrical system problem

"Received error from car that blind spot monitor and cross traffic alert sensors were not working. Also observed that rear lift gate kick sensor was not working. Took in for warranty service. Dealer mechanic determined that sensors drew too much power and stopped working as 12V battery voltage dropped, and replaced sensors with new ones that required less voltage/power. They also found corroded pins connecting the blind spot monitor and cross traffic alert sensors and replaced those. Issue is resolved now."

Anonymous A., IL (2021 Toyota Sienna Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Other body problem

"The drivers seat has started tearing at the seam . It started about 32 months. I mistakenly did not take it to the dealer til 38 months. Then I was told the seat covers for it are on back order. Sounds like a systemic issue."

Anonymous, LA (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The seats back tilt kept breaking for both middle row seats. The issue was the lever would stop working. After 4-5 attempts by the dealer to fix it, an escalation to Toyota helped to fix it."

Anonymous, GA (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Seat controls - manual

"Twice over the past three years the middle row seat wouldn't move backwards and forward and/or flip to fold for rear passenger exit."

Anonymous A., NJ (2021 Toyota Sienna 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The tail gate would randomly stop working. And it took few trips to the dealer to figure it out. It came down to a bad strut."

Anonymous, GA (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"The toe sensor that opens the sliding door doesn't work consistently. So, we don't use that feature."

Anonymous A., OR (2021 Toyota Sienna XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Rear hydraulic arms for tail gate went bad, costing $2000 to fix. Climate system is still problematic, in that the ducts are too small and it cannot circulate enough air through the vehicle. Too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter."

Anonymous, VA (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The liftgate is a nightmare. Im unsure whether this is a mechanical problem or a sensor problem. The liftgate will neither open nor close without having to manually force it. It opens or closes partially the stops. You can push any of the three buttons (key fob, console, or tailgate) with the same results."

Anonymous A., WV (2021 Toyota Sienna Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Other in-car electronics problem

"When I select normal Celsius units, the temperature displays on the centre screen update, but not on the dashboard or climate controls. When I took the vehicle in for its first service, they told me it is a known issue in the vehicle's software. Nobody has been able to offer a remedy for it, however. It's quite frustrating, especially for a brand-new top model, because the number on the dashboard looks like a speed to me, because outdoor temperatures don't normally get nearly that high. I've gotten used to it over the years, but it used to distract me quite a bit, and I often still want to know what the temperature is outside, in contemporary units that make sense."

Anonymous A., RI (2021 Toyota Sienna Platinum 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"When paired via charging cord the connection stops and the screen goes blank. It is very intermittent and can occur upon starting the vehicle or while driving."

Anonymous, OH (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"the rear hatch developed a severe leak. the dealer kept the car for nearly 6 months fixing it."

Anonymous, MD (2021 Toyota Sienna Platinum 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Squeaks or rattles

"Seat or trim rattling on passenger side"

Anonymous, ON (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Parking brake

"parking brake locked, and I had to get van towed to dealer TWICE in one year."

Anonymous, NC (2021 Toyota Sienna XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Rotors

"Service (Toyota dealer) claimed there was rust and a grove on the rotors, and that I needed expensive service - I suspect, but cannot prove, that I was being ripped off for unneeded repair work."

Anonymous, MD (2021 Toyota Sienna Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"It would not cool car, I took its to the dealer ship , the diagnosed the problem, replaced the compressor no cost to me."

Anonymous A., GA (2021 Toyota Sienna Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    EV Battery

    What Owners Say

    Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"There is a high pitched noise coming from the drivers side of the van. It usually starts after 30 mins of driving. The hum becomes louder and is a huge nuance. I brought the van in 3 times, and they could not find the issue. They needed to have the van overnight so they could drive it for 30 mins. Toyota HQ was not helpful at all. They forwarded my concern to the dealership manager, but could not tell me the managers name. (Subaru America is very helpful on issues like this). Strange they could not conduct the 30 min drive during their work day. What I found so far is that the noise comes on when it is hotter outside ( 70 degrees). After another forum poster recorded the same exact noise , people weighed in saying it was a battery fan bearing that keeps the battery under the front seats cool. Now it makes sense why it only comes on when it is hot and when it has been driving for a while. I am taking this back in to Toyota in July when its hotter out (we live in Maine)."
