    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2021 Toyota Tacoma owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Pulsation or vibration

"Not long after purchasing the truck, it would pulse the brake pedal when applied. I was told it was heat related and that the brakes were "Power Boosted" - not the standard vacuum assisted power brakes. I was also referred to the PowerStop brake web site for slotted rotors to dissipate heat faster and upgraded pads. I upgrade the front brakes from PowerStop, and that resolved the problem almost completely. The brake pedal will pulse on a rare occasion. When that happens, I will do a hard brake stop and the pulse goes away."

"The entire truck shakes above 55mph, and during braking. Took it to the dealer the first time for the braking at 500ish miles, they said the rotors were warped and wouldnt replace them under warranty. I replaced them myself with EBC rotors, problem persisted. Went back, they duplicated the issue and said it was typical of this type of truck. Its not, no other Tacoma Ive driven does this, my F-50 doesnt, my F350 doesnt, my FJ40 doesnt. Took it back again at the behest of Toyota Corporate, dealership said all 4 tires are out of round. This isnt the case, and Les Schwab, where I got them from, confirmed this. The issue also happened on the dealership tires and the replacement set I got. So far Im $1000 in from inspections and the brake rotors and theres no resolution in sight. Toyota Corporate says that I should take it back again for a fourth opinion, but Im probably not gonna do that, and instead just sell this and never buy another Toyota."

    Rotors

"When I bought the truck, there was a shudder when braking. Took it in with less than 5000 miles, the dealership said the rotors were warped, and that they wouldnt replace them under warranty because I could have done it myself. I replaced them with EBC rotors myself. The problem persists and their answers have been these trucks just do that which doesnt inspire confidence."

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"at 70,000 the rear springs were worn and needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, VA (2021 Toyota Tacoma SR 3.5-L V6)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Squeaks or rattles

"Cab mount misalignment from factory caused a significant squeak the body was rocked or went over small bumps in the road. It was covered under warranty, but there seems to be a significant number of owners who experience the same issue."

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Other in-car electronics problem

"The exterior temperature will either show incorect temperatures or go out completely whenever it rains."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
