"Intermittent Check Engine light due to DTC P0420 started about 3 months ago and went away each time. Dealership diagnosed the issue as needing a new catalytic converter and informed us that the VW Drive Easy Extended Warranty we had purchased at the time of vehicle purchase would not cover the repair and we would have to pay out of pocket. I investigated online further and found a TSB for faulty ECM software leading to premature failures of catalytic converters due to overheating, and as a result, VWoA had extended the Emissions Warranty for most 2018 and 2019 Atlases to be covered until 150,000 miles (inclduing our vehicle). I informed the dealership Service Advisor of this TSB and extension of the Emissions warranty, and with this information, he was able to get VW to cover the replacement of the catalytic converter. The dealership should already been aware of this situation by looking up our VIN without me having to find the TSB online. I work in the automotive industry and am very familiar with online NHTSA databases and the TSB mechanisms and am afraid a typical customer would have been left covering the cost of a new catalytic converter out of pocket in my situation (likely over $2000 cost)."
