    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Blower (fan) motor

"The fan speed function began to fail a year ago. It became progressively worse. I replaced the fan and resistor two weeks ago."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The blower motor stopped working mid-June and was promptly replaced. The entire air conditioning system worked fine after the blower motor was replaced."

Anonymous A., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Refrigerant leaks

"The water pump and housing was replaced for the second time due to a known issue. We were 750 miles out of the warranty extension that resulted from a legal case but our request for an exception was denied. This is the second time we've had to replace the same part in the six years we've owned the car."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen goes blank

"The audio system which includes car-play, etc., shuts down then the whole system starts up again. I brought it to my garage, they said they cannot find the problem. Took it to the dealer, they said the whole radio must be replaced at a cost of &1,800. I did not have it replaced - too expensive."

Anonymous A., QC (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Starting this past June, my screen would go blank and reset itself every 10 minutes or so and then shut down completely after an hour. I could not turn the system back on until after I turned off the ignition and restarted the car. Then the problem with the screen would start all over again. I have not resolved this problem. The built in navigation system also stopped working at the same time. It is stuck in data verification mode and/or restart mode."

Anonymous A., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel gauge/sender

"The fuel gauge failed. Which reguired it to be replaced. But the gauge was in the fuel tank and inaccessible. So the whole tank had to be replaced"

Anonymous, GA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Fuel pump

"vehicle wouldnt accelerate but got it to dealer and they fixed .."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Exhaust leaks

"The bolt on the clamp between the turbocharger and the catalytic converter broke"

Anonymous, OK (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other/unsure

"Battery Died. Bought a new one at Canadian Tire and had it installed by a friend."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Oil leaks

""Engine oil leak requiring replacement of engine oil cooler and new gaskets for the sub-assembly (bracket that has internal passages and supports the oil filter assembly and oil cooler). Common problem on the 1.8T engine. Repair cost estimate costs was almost $2K. I also suspect, but cannot prove, that the dealer may have been aware of an oil leak and a cooling system leak and waited until the vehicle was out of warranty to advise me of needed repairs. These are fairly common problems for this engine and there have been class action lawsuits with settlements from VW. Based on pictures I've seen on Reddit for the oil leak issue, you can see that the gasket for the sub-assembly attachment to the engine block has been damaged pretty much in the same location across several cars, likely indicating a problem during the initial assembly process. My vehicle was beyond the settlement warranty period for both the engine oil and water pump issues. The dealer has always been reluctant to discuss warranties that were extended as part of a lawsuit settlements. For the sunroof leak issue, when my car was new (less than 1 year old), they denied they were ever made aware of VW being sued. My costs to clean my headliner after a water leak were not reimbursed when VW issued a service bulletin for the free modification of the sunroof channel drain lines. Even then, the dealer only modified the front drain lines and denied responsibility when the unmodified rear drain lines caused a leak into the spare tire wheel well. Does VW not adequately reimburse dealerships for warranty repairs? Just feels like my dealership doesn't want to initiate repairs that are covered under warranty. I had my oil leak and cooling system leak repaired by an independent repair shop for about $2K, a savings of about $1K from the dealership estimate.""

Anonymous, OR (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Mirrors

"Passenger side mirror fell out of mirror assembly and replacement mirror cost over $200."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Engine Electrical

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery replacement, hybrid battery related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, spark plugs and wires failure, auto stop/start.

    What Owners Say

    Heated or cooled seats

"the fabric on the seat pulled apart. I now feel I must get a seat cover. I have never experienced this problem in 60 years of owning a car. Very disappointing."

Anonymous A., WY (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"The leaks caused by the constant clogging of the drains associated with the panoramic glass rooftop have been a constant problem and have existed since I first purchased the vehicle. It requires regular maintenance and even then there are no guarantees that leaks will not appear in the interior of the vehicle."

Anonymous A., ME (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, water pump, thermostat, antifreeze leaks, overheating.

    What Owners Say

    Water pump

""Some detail. My coolant leak was with the sub-assembly bracket (approx $2K repair estimate). The engine oil leak was the engine timing belt cover (approx $800 repair estimate). Water pump leaking or failure is fairly common on the Alltrack at around 50,000 to 60,000 miles. So, while my repair shop was doing the repairs for the leaks the dealership identified, I had the water pump replaced as well. My total costs at the repair shop were about $2,800, pretty much what the dealership wanted to charge without installing a new water pump. In spite of my issues I have zero regrets about purchasing the Alltrack and would likely purchase another Alltrack if they made a 2025 model. Fun car to drive and very practical without being as large as even a compact SUV. Will likely be our go to vehicle for long road trips (we use our Volvo XC40 Recharge around town and for short trips) until an affordable EV goes 450-500 miles on a charge. At 55,000 miles I thought I had escaped the oil leak, cooling system leak, and water pump issues many other VW/Audi owners were seeing with the 1.8T engine. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My biggest complaint is that dealership could have (and may have) identified these problems while the vehicle was under the original factory warranty or the extended warranties provided under lawsuit settlements.""
