""The valve stem seals began leaking and caused intermittent smoke. I took it to a trusted VW dealership where the cylinder head was basically rebuilt. While the head was removed and everything was accessible a new timing chain was installed, timing chain tensioners replaced and the cylinder bores evaluated for abnormal wear. No cylinder wear or abnormal issues found. This was the first major problem with the vehicle since it was purchased and after the repair runs smoothly and well again with no oil consumption at all 11,000 miles after the repair. I do not plan to replace the vehicle and continue to do all maintenance myself except transmission servicing. The valve stem seal issue began at approximately 106,000 miles with no prior indication of problems or unusual oil consumption. Oil consumption between 10,000 mile oil changes was under a half quart.""
