    First Take
Volkswagen has renamed the redesigned Golf as the Rabbit in the U.S., bringing back a name from the past. It is basically a versatile hatchback version of the Jetta, offered with two or four doors. The sole engine is a 2.5-liter five-cylinder that is somewhat noisy when revved. The 24 mpg overall that it returned in our automatic Jetta was not very impressive. We found that it had agile and secure handling, and the ride was fairly comfortable. Curtain air bags are standard, and stability control is optional.
