Volvo V70/XC70 First Drive

Introduction

The V70 wagon is essentially a wagon version of the S60. It's spacious and useful, with large, comfortable seats. The front passenger's seatback can fold to accommodate extra-long loads. The turbocharged 2.4-liter engine is quick enough. With AWD, both acceleration and fuel economy suffer. The unintuitive audio system is a major ergonomic shortcoming. The XC70 model has AWD and a raised ride height. Its ride is less comfortable than the V70's, and the steering feels vague and imprecise. For 2003, AWD models get a stronger 2.5-liter engine. A sporty R version is new this year.
